PERSONAL CODE OF ETHICAL CONDUCT FOR WORKING
WITH CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Ethical Responsibilities to Children
I will act and speak in a way that preserves the dignity and autonomy of
each child and fosters their natural curiosity and desire to learn.
I will take the time to discover underlying issues and unmet needs and act
to fulfill them, rather than simply reacting to the behavior of the child.
I will act as an advocate for children in whatever setting
or situation I find myself in.
Ethical Responsibilities to Families
I will make every effort to include family members when appropriate
and avoid any practice that may make families or family members
feel ostracized, shunned, or rejected.
I will allow people to grow, change, and evolve.
I will own up to my mistakes and admit when I have been
incorrect, misinformed, or unprofessional, or have failed to
handle a situation appropriately.
Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues
I will conduct myself in a way that does not show favoritism in the
workplace and will treat everyone professionally and as equals.
I will speak and act in a positive and constructive manner in order to
contribute to a caring and uplifting work environment.
I will be patient and helpful and will never use a person’s weakness
against them in any manner.
Ethical Responsibilities to Community and Society
I will be open to change and will make good use of
feedback, criticism, and suggestions.
I will share through word and example my knowledge of
children and families to guide and influence others
to act in ways that will benefit all involved.
I will encourage others to remember that children are
our equals and have a valuable perspective to offer.
