TEST ON TRANSFORMER

Open Circuit Test

- one winding (usually high voltage side) is left
open and the other is connected to its supply of
normal voltage and frequency.
Conducted to find:
- No load loss or core loss
- No load current which is helpful in finding Rc
and Xm

Short Circuit Test
- In this test, the terminals of the secondary
winding (usually low voltage winding) are short-
circuited by a thick conductor or through an
ammeter which may serve additional purpose of
indicating rated load current.

Conducted to find:
- Full load copper loss, PcuFL
- Equivalent resistance and reactance referred
to the metering side.

Sample 1
A 3300/300 V single phase transformer gives 0.6A and
60W as ammeter and wattmeter readings when supply
is given to the low voltage winding and high voltage
winding is kept open. Find the resistance representing
core loss and magnetizing reactance.
Sample 2
A short circuit test was performed upon a 10KVA,
2300/230 volt transformer with the following results
VSC = 137 V; PSC = 192 W, ISC = 4.39A. Calculate the
equivalent resistance and reactance of the transformer
in primary terms.
