Tom 4 days to build the fence, Dick 3 days, and Harry 6 days, how long would it take them
working together?

¼ + 1/3 + 1/6 = 1/x

3x + 4x + 2x = 12
9x = 12
x = 1 1/3 (answer)

2. John and Charles are linemen. John can string 10 miles of line in 3 days, while together they
can string it in I day. How long would it take Charles alone to string the same line?

1/3 + 1/x = 1/1

x + 3 = 3x
-2x =-3

3. A firm advertises for workers to address envelopes. Priscilla says she will work 100 hours. Herb
will work for 80 hours. If each can address 10,000 envelopes in the time they work, how long
would it take them to address 10,000 envelopes if they work together?

4x + 5x = 400
9x = 400
x = 44 4/9 (answer)

4. Mrs. Hensen cataloged a group of incoming library books in 8 hours. Mr. Taylor can catalog the
same number of books in 4 hours. Mrs. Phillips can catalog them in 6 hours. How long would it
take if they all worked together?

3x + 6x + 4x = 24
13x = 24
x = 1 11/13 (answer)

5. One machine can complete a job in 10 minutes. If the same job is done by this machine and an
older machine working together, the job can be completed in 6 minutes. How long would it
take the older machine to do the job alone?

3x + 30 = 5x
-2x = -30
x = 15 (answer)
6. The length of a rectangular soccer field is 10 feet more than twice the width. The perimeter is
320 feet. Find the length and width.

x = width of field in feet

2x + 5 = length of field in feet

320 = 2(x) + 2(2x + 10)

= 2x + -4x + 20
= 6x + 20
300 = 6x
x = 50; 2x + 10 = 110 (answers)

7. The second angle of a triangle is 20° greater than the first angle. The third angle is twice the
second. Find the three angles.

x = number of degrees in first angle

x + 20 = number of degrees in second angle
2(x + 20) = number of degrees in third angle

x + (x + 20) + 2(x + 20) = 180

4x + 60 = 180
4x = 120
x = 30; x + 20 = 50; 2(x + 20) = 100 (answers)

8. A farmer wishes to fence a rectangular area behind his barn. The barn forms one end of the
rectangle, and the length of the rectangle is three times the width. How many linear feet of
fence must the farmer buy if the perimeter of the rectangle is 320 feet?

x = width of fenced area in feet

3x = length of fenced area in feet

2(3x) + 2(x) = 320

8x = 320
x = 40
3x = 120

120 + 120 + 40 = 280 (answer)

9. The first side of a triangle is twice the second, and the third side is 20 feet less than three
times the second. The perimeter of the triangle is 106 feet. Find the three sides.

x = second side in feet

2x = first side in feet
3x - 20 = third side in feet
 x + 2x + (3x - 20) = 106
6x - 20 = 106
6x = 126
x = 21; 2x = 42; 3x - 20 = 43 (answers)

10. The length of a room is 8 feet more than twice the width. If it takes 124 feet of molding to go
around the perimeter of the room, what are the room's dimensions?

x = width in feet
2x + 8 = length in feet

2(x) + 2(2x + 8) = 124

6x + 4x + 16 = 124
6x + 16 = 124
6x = 108
