General Physics 1 Rotation

Rotation refers to the motion of a body turning about an

axis where each particle of the body moves along a circular
path.

General Physics 1 Angular Displacement
Angular displacement is defined as “the angle in
radians (degrees, revolutions) through which a point
or line has been rotated in a specified sense about a
specified axis”. It is the angle of the movement of a
body in a circular path.
θ is the angular displacement,

s is the distance travelled by the

body, and

r is the radius of the circle along

which it is moving.

A Theta moving counterclockwise have a positive

theta while a theta moving clockwise have a negative
theta.

is measured in Radians/rads
One revolution is 2 radians
Quarter a revolution is radians

General Physics 1 Angular Velocity
Angular velocity is the vector measure of the rotation
rate, which refers to how fast an object rotates or
revolves relative to another point.

- Angular displacement/time
Positive angular velocity

-
- Measured in rad/s
- Sometimes in rpm Negative angular velocity

General Physics 1 Angular Acceleration
Angular acceleration is defined as the time rate of
change of angular velocity.
- Change in angular velocity per unit time.
- Expressed in the symbol alpha
- Measured in

How do we initiate an object into rotational motion?

TORQUE

The ability of force to rotate an object.

- Expressed in the Greek letter (tau)

- F = applied force
- d = distance where force is applied
- = angle between the force vector
And the plane of the rotating object.

General Physics 1 Moment of Inertia

The property of a rotating body to resist change in its

state of motion. The moment of Inertia I of a particle
about an axis is obtained by multiplying the mass m by
the square of its distance r from the axis.
