Islamiyat
Islamiyat generally refers to the wide-reaching field of Islamic studies. It
includes the fundamental believes, history and theology of Islam. By
studying Islamiyat one can know about the complete Islamic lifestyle.
Islam provides guidance on every daily activities starting from waking up
in the morning to going to bed at night.

The first thing that comes to my mind after hearing the word islamiyat is
kindness. Islam is a religion of peace. And kindness is supposed to be the
marker of our faith. So whoever is not kind has no faith.

There are five pillars of Islam. They are-sahada(faith), salah(prayer),

zakat(almsgiving), sawm(fasting) and hajj(pilgrimage). Faith and salah
instil kindness on an inner level while obligations of zakat and sawm
encourage empathy and giving to those in need. During Ramadan, when
we fast for 30 days, we understand the pain and struggles of the poor. It
makes us sympathize with those who cannot even manage one meal a
day. Zakat is a religious obligation ordering all Muslims who meet the
necessary criteria to donate a certain portion of wealth each year to
charitable causes. This is also an act of kindness.

Islam teaches us to care for all living creatures. Planting a tree, feeding a
hungry dog, rescuing a stray cat- all of these can be ibadah. For example,
Planting a tree is a sadaqah jariyah (continued charity) in Islam, for the
poor and the rich alike. Whenever a human being or even an animal
shelters under the shade of a tree or relishes a fruit that it produces, the
planter will earn rewards, even after his or her death.

Kindness and sharing build brotherhood and sincerity.

Brotherhood conducts to a huge prosperity in our community and
society at large. Allah describes the believers as being brothers. As
brothers we must never do wrong to each other, never forgo supporting
each other and never abandon each other in hardships. We must display
human kindness.

Islam’s understanding of “kindness” is that all forms of human

intentions, desires and requests as well as actions is not limited to
physical, material strength or financial power. It has much broader
meaning. Those who choose the path of goodness in everything that they
do, materialistically and spiritually will not only contribute and revive
their own lives, they will benefit those around them and their
communities. In Islam, every good and halal deed is ibadah. And if there
is a good deed, Allah will multiply it and pay out an immense reward
directly from Him. Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) taught us to carry out
good deeds, no matter how small they are.

We should keep our faith that Allah will reward those who spread
kindness with kindness. Spreading kindness in our lives is what Allah
obligates us to do. That’s why we need to be kind not only to other
people but also animals and the environment.
