he new S&OP cycle kicks off today. The team begins by
reviewing last month’s performance. Red flags emerge:
Sales of a product category was underestimated by 25%
and logistics costs were higher than planned. The team alerts the
sales rep, logistics manager and financial controller.

The sales rep, upon receiving the alert, grabs his mobile to review
the previous cycle’s sales history. Clearly, his prediction of 15%
growth for a top customer was off. He ups it to 30%. His manager
sees the change in the system; she thinks it’s still too low. She
bumps it up to 40% and alerts him. Shortly, he receives another
alert — this time, from the demand planner who informs him that
next month’s statistical forecast is ready.

The team reconvenes at a demand meeting. A new consensus

unconstrained forecast is published and sent to the supply planners.
Based on the forecast, the system generates an optimized supply
plan. The team compares it to last month’s plan — there’s a 5% drop
in fulfillment. The logistics manager is alerted. “It’s our carrier,” he
replies. “We need to replace it.”

The team tests several hypotheses: Should they hire a spot carrier,
increase capacity of another carrier, or reroute demand to another
site? The system models the cost, revenue and supply chain
constraints of each option. It picks the one that best maximizes
margins and meets KPIs.

The system then simulates growth of 20%, 40% and 60% for the
top customer that was underestimated. They review each scenario’s
potential impact on business KPIs and make a decision.

The time comes for the team to present their proposal. At the S&OP
executive meeting, it is discussed and compared against the budget.
Instead of a 5% drop in fulfillment and failing to meet the budget,
the proposal puts them back on track to achieve revenue and
margins that will exceed the budget by end of the financial year.
Confident that they’ve made the right decision, the team publishes
the plan and uses it as input for the next cycle.
