BUILDING ENERGY STANDARDS???

WHAT are building energy efficiency Standards?

Building energy efficiency standards are designed to ensure new and existing
buildings achieve energy efficiency and preserve outdoor and indoor
environmental quality. These measures (Title 24, Part 6) are listed in the
California Code of Regulations.

WHY are Building Standards important?

Energy efficiency Standards make buildings more comfortable, lower energy
costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Standards ensure that builders
use the most energy efficient technologies and construction.

WHEN did Building Standards start?

California’s first building energy efficiency Standards went into effect in 1978.
AB32 Global Warming Solutions Act

 Adopted in 2006 to reduce Greenhouse

Gas Emissions (GHGs)

 Requires an 80% reduction in GHGs below

1990 levels by 2050

 Compliance will require a cut in emissions

of about 30% per person in California

 Efficiency strategies that pay for

themselves through energy savings
Zero Net Energy (ZNE) Buildings
250 million $66 billion in
metric ton electricity &
of GHGs natural gas
saved savings

37 million cars
After 30 years off California
14,000 GWh or roads
enough
electricity for 200 million
1.67 million gallons of
homes water per year
or 6.5 million
wash loads
The effective date of the
2016 Building Energy Efficiency Standards
is January 1, 2017
ANY projects that apply for permit on or after
Jan 1, 2017 will be subject to the 2016 Standards.
Title 24 and Energy Efficiency is more
than just putting LED lighting or other
energy efficient equipment into
buildings.
Energy Efficiency is about CONTROLLING
all Energy Loads cost-effectively!
