GUIDELINES FOR TEACHING ON THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IN ROME PROGRAM

Qualifications & Teaching Expectations

Regular full-time Catholic University faculty are invited to apply to teach undergraduate courses in the Catholic
University Rome Program that are both appropriate to the location and suitable for a wide range of Catholic
University undergraduate majors. Cross-listed courses are highly encouraged. Faculty in Rome may expect a
teaching load of three undergraduate courses. The department chair or school dean will determine, based on
the needs of the department or school, the teaching load for the semester spent at Catholic University prior to
or following the Rome Program appointment.

For applicants to a fall teaching term - Preference will be given to faculty who are prepared to teach a course in
the curriculum of the University Honors Program (http://honors.cua.edu/curriculum/index.cfm).

For the summer term, faculty will teach during one 3-week session. Session dates will be set closer to the start
of the term, but they will generally be mid-May to early June (Session One), early June to late June (Session
Two), and late June to mid-July (Session Three).

Approval Process

Interested Catholic University faculty must first complete the “Teaching for the Catholic University Rome
Program Proposal & Approval Form” (see below) and then submit it to the Office of Global Strategies (OGS).
Applications must be endorsed by the department chair (in departmentalized schools) and school dean,
reviewed by OGS, and ultimately approved by the provost.

When faculty teach in Rome during the fall or spring, the dean will help departments cover the courses that the
faculty member would have otherwise taught during that semester in D.C. Department chairs should be aware
that in this circumstance there is no possibility of the department being able to appoint a full-time visitor in the
regular faculty member’s absence. Instead, the chair will consult with the dean about courses needing to be
covered and the Dean will make stipends for replacement lecturers available. This is not a guarantee that every
course will be automatically replaced, but the dean will consider each request on a case-by-case basis.

Compensation

Semester faculty will continue to receive their regular salary and benefits while teaching in Rome. Summer
faculty will receive a salary of $5,000 plus benefits. In addition, Catholic University will cover round-trip airfare
(see guidelines below), mandatory international health and emergency evacuation insurance, visa fee (if
applicable), and any costs related to obtaining the Italian stay permit (permesso di soggiorno). Faculty housing
will be provided whenever possible, either through university-sponsored housing or through a housing
allowance (consult with OGS for current amount, if applicable), but is subject to the availability of facilities
and/or funds. No other travel and/or personal expenses will be covered by Catholic University.

OGS will cover round-trip DC-Rome-DC basic economy, including one bag fee, airfare only. The approved dates
of travel include arrival in Rome one day before student check-in and departure the same day students move
out of their housing in Rome. OGS will cover only the lowest available reasonable flight(s); any airfare difference
(different route, dates, or class) will be paid by the faculty member. OGS encourages faculty to book their flights
through our office to avoid paying out of pocket, but may otherwise book their flight independently based on
the above criteria and then request reimbursement.

If the visiting faculty member opts to be in Rome beyond the program dates or chooses housing that exceeds
the allowance, they will be responsible for the cost difference.

Faculty wishing to bring family members will be responsible for all additional associated costs. Catholic
University will only cover program-related costs of the faculty member.

Catholic University will provide the necessary documentation for the faculty to obtain the appropriate work visa
in Italy for their appointed term. Catholic University does not, however, assume any responsibility for facilitating
visas for family members. Under current Italian regulations, visitors are eligible to stay in Italy without a visa for
a period not to exceed 90 days within a 180-day period. Faculty must ensure, and provide proof to Catholic
University and the Rome Program Director, that all family members are in compliance with all Italian
immigration regulations.

While faculty will be enrolled in the University’s International Health and Emergency Evacuation Insurance
Coverage, all accompanying family members must also enroll in the same insurance (no substitutions allowed).
Catholic University does not cover the cost of this additional insurance coverage.

Responsibilities

Faculty are personally responsible for compliance with the University Travel Policy and the International Travel
Policy.

Faculty will be expected to actively promote the Rome Program to prospective interested faculty, students, and
the entire Catholic University community.

Faculty must attend the mandatory OGS “Overseas Faculty Director” training session and the program pre-
departure orientation prior to teaching in Rome. Failure to complete both sessions may result in the teaching
appointment being rescinded.

Once in Rome, the faculty will work under the supervision of OGS and the Rome Program Director while
participating in the Rome program.

Faculty are responsible for being actively involved in the Rome program (e.g. advising, group meals, organized
trips and excursions, etc.) and will teach and interact with all students attending the Rome program.

Upon return to Catholic University, faculty will submit a program report to the Director of Education Abroad,
which is shared with the Rome Director, the department chair (in departmentalized schools), the school dean,
and the provost. The report must be submitted within the first month of the following term back in Washington,
