Kurt Lewin is a German-born American social

psychologist known for his field theory of
behavior, which holds that human behavior is
a function of an individual’s psychological
environment.

Three Stages of Change

This is the stage which involves finding a

method of making it possible to let go of
an old pattern that was somehow
counterproductive. Overcoming the strains
of individual resistance and group
conformity is a must.

Increase the driving forces that direct behavior

away from the existing situation or status quo.
decrease the restraining forces that negatively
affect the movement from the existing equilibrium.

finding a combination of the first two methods

Once you have "unfrozen", The next stage is

stage 2, The change stage, also called
"moving to a new level" or "movement." This
involves a process of change in thoughts,
feeling, behavior, or all three, that is in
some way more liberating or more
productive.

The third stage is the refreezing stage. In

this stage, we establish the change as the
new habit, so that it now becomes the
"standard operating procedure." Without
this final stage, the patient can easily go
back to old habits which are now
considered counterproductive.
