the fact that they are subjected to relatively small moments. Although
this is not recommended from an economic point of view since we
are using more steel than actually needed.

Steps for the design :

 Get the max values of factored moments (Mu) and shear
forces (Vu) from Robot S.A. for all the beams.

1) Design of flexure reinforcement:

 Calculate the nominal resistance 𝑅𝑛 = 𝑀𝑛/𝑏𝑑 2
𝑓𝑦
 Calculate 𝑚 =
0.85𝑓𝑐′
 Calculate the required reinforcement ratio:
1 2𝑚𝑅𝑛
𝜌= ∗ 1 − 1 −
𝑚 𝑓𝑦

 Calculate the required 𝐴𝑠 = 𝜌 ∗ 𝑏𝑤 ∗ 𝑑

 Select the reinforcement bars.
 Check for spacing.
 Check for ∅.
 Check the nominal moment strength provided by the
reinforcement.

2) Design of shear reinforcement: (a)ACI318M -11

(eq.11-3)
 Calculate the nominal shear strength provided by concrete:
Vc = 0.17 ∗ λ ∗ fc′ ∗ bw ∗ d(a)
(b)ACI318M -11
 Calculate the nominal shear strength required by steel (𝑉𝑠 ): (eq.11-2)
𝑉𝑛 = 𝑉𝑠 + 𝑉𝑐 (b)
𝑉𝑢
𝑉𝑠 = − 𝑉𝑐 (c) )
∅ ACI318M -11
If 𝑉𝑠 ≤ 0 → 𝑉𝑢 < ∅𝑉𝑐 and min shear reinf. Is required. (eq.11-15)
If 𝑉𝑠 > 0 → 𝑉𝑢 > ∅𝑉𝑐 and web shear reinf. Is required.

 Assume shear reinforcement (bar diameter and No. of

stirrups legs) and calculate the provided area Av.
 Calculate the max spacing based on : (d)ACI318M -11
(sec. 11.4.5.1 & 11.4.5.3)
- Required Vs (for web reinforcement)
𝐴 𝑓 𝑑 𝐴 𝑓 𝑑
𝑉𝑠 = 𝑣 𝑦𝑡 → 𝑠 = 𝑣 𝑦𝑡 (c)
𝑠 𝑉𝑠
- d/2 if 𝑉𝑠 ≤ 0.33fc′ bw d (d)
- d/4 if 𝑉𝑠 > 0.33fc′ bw d

- Av min (for min reinforcement)

And choose the desired spacings for web and min reinf. zones
within these limits.

 Check Vs provided by the web shear reinforcement.

Check for ∅:

𝑑𝑎𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑟 14
𝑑𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 = ℎ − 𝐶. 𝐶 − 𝑑𝑠 − = 400 − 40 − 8 − =

𝑑𝑡 343

No need to check 𝑀𝑛 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 since 𝐴𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 ≫

𝐴𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 for the considered beam.

Design of shear reinf. :

𝑉𝑢 = 38.14 𝑘𝑁
Nominal shear strength provided by concrete:
Vc = 0.17 ∗ λ ∗ fc′ ∗ bw ∗ d = 0.17 ∗ 1 ∗ √28 ∗ 200 ∗ 345 = 62.1 𝑘𝑁
Strength reduction factor for shear ∅ = 0.75(d)

Nominal shear strength required by steel:

𝑉𝑢 38.14
𝑉𝑠 = − 𝑉𝑐 = − 62.1 = −10.856
∅ 0.75
This means that the concrete strength alone is enough to resist the
applied shear.
∴ Only min shear reinf. Is required for this beam.

Try ∅ 𝟖 𝒎𝒎 𝟐 𝑳𝒆𝒈 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒓𝒖𝒑𝒔:

𝜋 ∗ 82
𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑣 = 2 ∗ = 100.53 𝑚𝑚2

From eqn. (11-13) (ACI sec.11.4.6.3):

𝑏 ∗𝑆 0.35∗𝑏𝑤 ∗𝑆
𝐴𝑣,𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.062𝑓𝑐′ 𝑤 ≥
𝑓𝑦𝑡 𝑓𝑦𝑡
𝐴𝑣∗ 𝑓𝑦𝑡 100.53 ∗ 420
𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑥 = = = 643.49 𝑚𝑚
0.062𝑓𝑐′ ∗ 𝑏𝑤 0.062 ∗ √28 ∗ 200

Choose 𝑆 = 300 𝑚𝑚 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝑣,𝑚𝑖𝑛 zone

Notes about the design:

• Three designs have been adopted for flexure and their distribution is
shown on the beams plan which is attached with this report.

• Beams with web reinf. + min reinf. And beams with min reinf. only
have been shown on the beams plan which is attached with this
report.

• The calculations for the rest of the beams are done in an Excel sheet
which is attached with this report.
