Magbanua BSED English 4 Teaching Literature

1. What to teach when we use literary texts?

Anybody encountering any literature (any art, in fact) has a response: literary criticism
teaches ways to articulate, explain, analyse and discuss that response. This involves
engaging with an often submerged tradition of thought about literature. In teaching using
the literary text we had to select a material that is appropriate to the level of the class that
we are teaching.

2. What kind of text to work with?

In teaching using literary text, the kind of text to work with is to select text that is
according to the need of our students or course objectives.

3. What can literary text be used for?

Literary text can be use most especially in teaching a language.

4. How to make students enjoy literature?

To make the students enjoy literature is that , catch their attention in the literary piece
which is interesting to them, motivate them and let them explore the literature in their own
way of analyses.

5. Describe the traditional Method of teaching Literature.

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of

texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of
contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its
historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past
works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to
be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and
carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the
human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing,
and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated
taste and ethos.
