College 101: College Success

through your Canvas e-mail. I will check Canvas and e-mail regularly, but not several times per
day and not usually both days on the weekends. You might check assignments due in advance so
if you need to ask for clarification, you provide enough time for me to get back with you.

REQUIRED TEXT & MATERIALS:

We will be using a free online textbook for this course and it is available in the Canvas classroom.
You may choose download the chapters for reading and may want to print them, so please make
sure you have access to a printer. You may print from the campus computer labs or library.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Develop, understand and apply college success strategies to include college resources and student
services, rights and responsibilities, financing college, organization, time management,
appreciating diversity, learning strategies, choosing a college major, achieving college goals and
preparation for the completion of an academic plan.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Examine and articulate the student’s reasons for attending college, articulate the
difference between success strategies in college versus high school, work, etc. and apply
these new strategies.
2. Successfully navigate campus resources. services, and technology;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of college terminology and describe the different types of
college programs available at EvCC.
4. Demonstrate successful academic behaviors, apply effective learning strategies; and
interpret student rights and responsibilities.
5. Identify strategies for financing college
6. Describe the process and pathways to select a college major and find additional sources
for career guidance.
7. Demonstrate the ability to create and revise an up-to-date academic plan in preparation
to meet with an academic advisor.
8. Define and discuss the importance of diversity and civility in today’s classroom and
community.
9. Navigate and use the college web page including the student kiosk to locate and utilize
important information.
CLASS STRUCTURE:

This is not a lecture based course.


Because this is an online class, you are responsible for doing the activities and assignments. You
are expected to stay up to date with weekly readings and assignments. You are required to do
all of the weekly assignments by each due date—this is NOT a self-paced course.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

1. Attend class regularly and participate in all activities, discussions & assignments. In an
online class, this means checking into the classroom several times each week and
participating in any required discussions.
2. Read and complete all assignments on time.
3. Be motivated to participate and learn - HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!
4. Notify the instructor with any questions or concerns in a timely manner.
5. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited and carries academic consequences.

EVALUATIONS & GRADING:

All assignments are due promptly on their scheduled due dates. Late work is frowned upon, and
will be graded down significantly unless you have received prior approval. It is your responsibility
to contact me in advance if there is a problem, or for any missing information you may need to
meet your obligations. Attendance means that you have been in the classroom at least several
times every week.

GRADING SCALE:

Letter grades will be assigned based on the following scale:


A 92 and above B+ 87 to 89.99 C+ 77 to 79.99 D+ 67 to 69.99
A- 90 to 91.99 B 82 to 86.99 C 72 to 76.99 D 62 to 66.99
B- 80 to 81.99 C- 70 to 71.99 F <62

Points will be awarded for each assignment. Please stay on top of how you’re doing by checking
the Canvas grade book. Email me to discuss any concerns promptly. A passing grade in this
course is required.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Attendance and assignments: 80%

Final portfolio (see below) 20%

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION:

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY!! This means that you must be in the classroom at least several
times during the week. Because this is an online class, there are very few (if any) valid reasons for
missing a class.
HOMEWORK:

In an online class, everything is homework and it will be graded at the end of each week. Due
dates for assignments are firm unless special arrangements are made with the instructor. Please be
aware that there may be some discussions where you will be required to participate at multiple
times throughout the week.

This is 80% of your grade, so be sure to stay on top of the assignments. Each assignment will be
worth 100 points and will be averaged at the end of the quarter. 80% of the assignments
average will be added to 20% of the portfolio average for your final grade.

FINAL PORTFOLIO:

Details about how to do your portfolio are located in the Canvas classroom. This is worth 100
point and counts as 20% of your final grade. Your portfolio will include the following:

1. A career research project

2. A developed goal statement

3. A draft of your Academic Plan at EvCC

4. A projected college financial plan

CANVAS

Please check into the classroom several times a week—all of your assignments are given and
completed through Canvas. The class week begins at one minute after midnight on Monday
mornings and ends at midnight on Sunday evenings.

CLASS CONDUCT

You are expected to treat both your classmates and your instructor with courtesy and respect at
all times. This means that in an online environment, written communication must be respectful—no
flaming or trolling behavior is allowed. Disruptive students will be asked to leave the class. See
the EvCC student handbook for behavioral expectations.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. See the EvCC Student Handbook for details.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Everett Community College complies with all federal and state laws and regulations regarding
discrimination, including the ADA Act of 1990. If you have a documented disability, a reasonable
accommodation for equal access to education or services can be made through the Dean of
Students Office. Students should notify the Director of the Center for Disability Services (located in
Parks 267 right across from the bookstore) and their instructors of any accommodation needs as
soon as possible.

will add in or change assignments throughout the quarter. Please note that all weekly readings
and assignments will be available one week in advance in Canvas and are not listed invidually

Final Exam:

No final exam will be given in College 101; however, most classes will have a final
exam that is held at a specific time and place. Please check carefully to see where
and when the finals for your other classes will be held.
