AIMS & PRINCIPLES OF SURGERY

Aims of Surgery:
1. To save the life of animal
2. To prolong the life of animal
3. To hasten recovery from an injury
4. For elimination of disease process
5. For cosmetic reasons
6. For correctind deformities or malformation
7. For replacement of part by artificial one
8. On economic reason or make animal socially acceptable
9. To aid a diagnosis of asuspected pathological process
10. Foe investigation in research work

Principles of Surgery( Tenets of halsstead):

The principles o modern surgery first laid down by Halstead (1852-1922)

1. Gentle Handling of Tissue.


2. Asceptic Surgery ( Should be performed under asceptic condition)
3. Anatomical dissection. The dissection of tissue during should be very discretionary. No
muscle nerve or vessel should be cut unnecessarily.
4. Control of haemorrhage. Bleeding should be controlled at every stage during deccection .
5. Obliteration of dead space .The creation of vacant cavities should be avoided while
closing the wound after surgery because blood , exudate will collect there
6. Use of minimum quqntity uture material.
7. Avoidance of suture tension.
8. Immobilisation.

General considerations :
Proficiency in operative surgery requires careful attention to the following points :—

1. The condition of the patient.


2. The antomy and normal condition of the region to be operated upon
3. The preparation of the patient. IV. The place and time of operation,
4. The control of the animal.
5. Anaesthesia.
6. Asepsis and antisepsis.
