Hippies

Positive Force for Social Change or Troubled Youth?

The issue: In the 1960s, thousands of mostly white, middle-class young people "dropped out" of mainstream
society to live in hippie communities throughout the U.S. They opposed the materialism and conformity of the 1950s
and the Vietnam War of the 1960s, advocating peace and love instead. Were the hippies a force for social change
or simply troubled young people? Read the two arguments below and tell me what you think. Are Hippies troubled
youth or a positive force for change? This should be 5-7 sentences and should be your opinion. Tell me how you
feel, not just the information that is given to you below.

 Arguments that the hippies are troubled youth: Hippies have withdrawn into a life of idleness, drugs and sex
to avoid a world they do not approve of rather than taking action to reform it. Therefore, the hippies cannot be
considered leaders of a social movement; they are simply apathetic pleasure seekers. Furthermore, the hippie
lifestyle is a dangerous one. Because their excessive drug use makes hippies passive and unable to defend
themselves, they are often victims of violence.

 Arguments that the hippies are a positive force for change: Hippies offer an alternative to a troubled society.
They are not apathetic but in fact are trying to create a society based on the nation's founding ideals of democracy,
justice and individualism. The hippies lead by example. For instance, hippies do not just oppose the war but live
violence-free lives as well. Even if some hippies have simply withdrawn from society, society is so sick that
withdrawal from makes perfect sense.

Hippies advocated nonviolence and love, a popular phrase being “Make love, not war,” for which
they were sometimes called “flower children.” They promoted openness and tolerance as alternatives
to the restrictions and regimentation they saw in middle-class society. At the end of day it’s innocent
civilians and soldier dying not leadeds.I agree with the hippies to end the war because it’s costing
civilians lives. And fighting and killing innocents will only put a bad image of your country out their to
the world to see. And the hippies were helping the people so we should be like them more.
