Georgette

Georgette was brought into the Fashion Industry

back in the 20thCentury by Madame Georgette De
Le Plante, it was a unique fabric because of its
extensive usage in Gowns and Dresses to give it a
Net Finish.

Georgette is a lightweight fabric, since it is used to

give Net Finish; it is definitely a Sheer Fabric and
has a grainy feel when touched.
It is strong and tear resistant and can be easily
dyed in various colors that it is quite absorbent, and
is also one of the most popular fabrics used in
Printing

There are 2 types of Georgette

One is Pure Georgette woven out of Silk Yarns
Second is the Faux Georgette which woven from
Rayon and Polyester.

It is woven in highly twisted yarns of S and Z, in

both Warp and Weft.

Varieties of Georgette;
It comes in various forms the most famous and
expensive is the one made of Pure Silk Yarns,
Where as the one made from Viscose and
Polyester are quite cheaper and less breathable
than Silk (Since Natural Fiber’s have a very good
Breathability Quality) However not only the yarns
that are used to make georgette create variety there
are other specifications as well, a few of them are
listed here;
1. Georgette-A traditional type of Georgette,
sheer and grainy, also called Crepe Georgette.
2. Jacquard Georgette- A type of fabric woven on
a Jacquard Loom (Woven fabrics
manufactured by using the Jacquard
attachment on the loom. This attachment
provides intricate versatility in designs and
permits individual control of each of the warp
yarns. Thus, fabrics of almost any type or
complexity can be made. Brocade and damask
are types of jacquard woven fabric) these
patterns are very stable, strong and durable as
compared to prints.
3. Embroidered Georgette- Embellished with
sequins, beadwork and threads.
4. Satin Georgette- A heavier type of georgette

constructed in a Satin Weave (A basic weave,

characterized by long floats of yarn on the face
of the fabric. The yarns are interlaced in such a
manner that there is no definite, visible pattern
of interlacing and, in this manner, a smooth
and somewhat shiny surface effect is
achieved.) It has low sheen.
5. Stretch Weave- Contains Spandex/ lycra to
give it stretchy feel
6. Double Georgette- A denser but still
translucent type of georgette.
7. Poly Georgette- Also called Polyester
Georgette is an extremely light, floaty fabric
with a soft draping quality. The threads used
in Georgette fabric are highly twisted, which
causes them to crinkle slightly as they relax.
They give the fabric a crinkly, crepe like
texture, which feels slightly rough but gives the
fabric a bouncy flowing look

Characteristics
1. The Crepe like texture of georgette fabric
makes it very springy,
2. It also drapes well, making a popular choice for
women’s fashion in which clingy yet flowing
fabrics are required.
3. It is lightweight, and can be used as a layer in a
garment
4. Though georgette is considered as a strong
material than chiffon, it is still advisable to
follow special care while washing like Hand
Wash and use of very little detergent.
5. Pure Georgette is quite expensive in
comparison to all other types.
6. Faux Georgette is least 5 times cheaper than
pure georgette.
7. It is best for Springy and lively gowns, because
of its strength and crepe like texture.
8. It can also be used to accessorize the garment
since it is highly absorbent in nature.

Spring/Summer 2019 Print Trends for

Georgette
If you are an active fashion follower, you’re already
familiar with the main trends of the season, but if
you are not, then we have you covered;
(a) Animal
This year you get to choose between leopard,
snakeskin and tiger. Animal print georgette dresses
can be quite casual or, on the contrary, party-like.
Experiment with lengths and cuts to find the most
comfortable pattern for your body.
(b) Checks
Choose between pure checks or checks mixed with
florals for a romantic twist. Lightweight georgette
tops and blouses with a check print are ideal for a
stroll in the park, an evening with your friends, or a
visit to an art gallery.
(c) Stripes
They never go out of fashion, do they? Vertical,
horizontal, diagonal… There are many varieties
revisited by fashion designers over and over again.
Striped georgette fabric will make amazing wide-leg
pants, stylish blouses or fancy shirts.
(d) Polka Dots
This timeless pattern is also one of the favorite
trends in the coming season. Try monochromatic
combinations (black-and-white) or vibrant duos to
set the mood for your summer wardrobe. Think
dotted and spotted dresses, pinafores, tunics and
blouses.
(e) Abstract
Abstract splashes of colors are among the brand
new fashion trends for the warm season. If you’re
not a fan of abstract art, try shading instead:
degrade and ombre effects look stunning in long
skirts and maxi dresses.
(f) Feathers
The feather trend has been gaining popularity since
Autumn/Winter 2018. Many fashion designers use
real feathers to decorate dresses, jackets and
boots. If you like it plain, skip extra decoration and
go for a feather printed georgette fabric.
(g) Floral
So feminine, floral patterns look stunning on flowy
fabrics.

Note

The threads used in georgette fabric are highly

twisted, which causes them to crinkle as they
relax. The weave of georgette tends to be
rather tight, but the overall appearance is
slightly sheer, since the threads are very thin.
Unlike some fine silks, georgette fabric is also
unusually strong, and it holds up well to varied
wear. Since silk is highly absorbent, georgette
fabric can easily be dyed in a myriad of colors,
or printed with a pattern.

Moving forward many people think Chiffon and

Georgette are the same, well they are not, we
will give you a few key differences between
them so that you can identify the fabric’s and
will be talking about Chiffon in detail on 5th
June

The main difference is that Chiffon is

Lightweight and Flowing but it is not as Clingy
as Georgette, and is better for styles that
require good draping capacity (the ability of a
fabric to hang softly into loose flexible folds)
Georgette is also a bit heavier than chiffon and a bit
less sheer.

There are a few benefits attached with using

pure georgette, even though it is a little
expensive
1. Silk georgette is a breathable, all-climate fabric.
You can wear it all year round, but it’s
especially gorgeous in spring and summer
when we tend to go for lightweight materials.
2. Due to high absorbency, silk fabrics feature the
most vibrant prints and colors. Plus, they are
colorfast. Oh, and they also dry quickly!
3. Silk georgette has an outstanding bouncy
drape. Thanks to that, it is equally suitable for
tailoring separate items like dresses, tops or
skirts, as well as for layering over other
garments.
4. Silk georgette material is very strong. It can be
damaged, of course, but it’s more stable
compared to chiffon, and you can even
embroider on it!
5. When made from silk, georgette becomes
really crease-resistant.
6. Silk fabric repels mildew, mold and dust, which
mean it is easy to store.
7. Silk is hypoallergenic.
