An introduction to human resources management

What is human resources management?


➢ in order to know what human resources management is, it’s useful to start
with what managers do in any organization.
➢ An organization consists of people with formally assigned rules who work
together to achieve the organization’s goals
➢ A manager is someone who is responsible for accomplishing the organization’s
goals by managing efforts of organization’s people
➢ There is five basic functions for the management process which are
Planning: establishing goals and standards; developing rules and
procedures; developing plans and forecasts.
Organizing: giving each subordinate a specific task; establishing
departments; delegating authority and communication; coordinate the
work of subordinates.
Leading: getting others to get the job done; maintaining morale; motivating
subordinates.
Controlling: setting standards such as sales quotes, quality standards, or
production levels; checking to see how actual performance compares with
these standards; taking corrective action as needed

➢ So, here is the HR functions :


✓ Compensation and benefits:
An essential function of an HR department is administration of the company’s
compensation and benefits strategy
✓ Recruitment and selection :
The recruitment and selection process starts with workforce planning to determine
the organization’s staffing recruitments ; HR staff carries out the duties of recruiting
talent, recruiting includes posting job vacancies , screening applicants through
preliminary interviews , providing guidance to managers on hiring decisions and
organizing the final stages of the vetting process of the new employees
✓ Training and development :
Hr training and development responsibilities begin with new employee orientation ,
preparing activities for newly hired workers is an essential step for hr to establish
the relationship between the employer and the employee , HR development and
training section coordinates skills training and professional development
opportunities that prepare employees for additional responsibilities with the
company as well as future promotions
✓ Employee and labor relations:
It includes activities such as planning employee recognition and reward events,
identifying workplace issues, investigating employee complaints, ensuring HR
compliance with employment laws and regulations and administrating employee
opinion surveys.
✓ Organizational behavior :
Organizational behavior is the term used to describe how people within their
organizations act individually or in groups, and how organizations function, in terms
of their structure, processes and culture

✓ Performance management :
Performance management is a systematic process for improving organizational
performance by developing the performance of individuals and teams. It is a means
of getting better results by understanding and managing performance within an
agreed framework of planned goals, standards and competency requirements.

✓ Strategic management:
Strategic HRM is an approach that defines how the organization’s goals will be
achieved through people by means of HR strategies and integrated HR policies and
practices. Strategic HRM can be regarded as a mind set underpinned by certain concepts
rather than a set of techniques. It provides the foundation for strategic reviews in which
analyses of the organizational context and existing HR practices lead to choices on
strategic plans for the development of overall or specific HR strategies Strategic HRM
involves the exercise of strategic choice (which is always there) and the establishment of
strategic priorities But strategic HRM is not just about strategic planning. It is also
concerned with the implementation of strategy and the strategic behavior of HR
specialists working with their line management colleagues on an everyday basis to
ensure that the business goals of the organization are achieved and its values are put
into practice. The strategic role of HR practitioners is examined in Chapter 5.
