ADDING A NEW
EVENT
Thi s i s actual ly reall y easy. L et 's start in t he Word P ress
dashboard - you should be able t o f i nd a menu entr y
cal led  Events  and, i f you cli ck on i t, you s hou ld s e e
the Add New  li nk.

Once you've found i t, go ahead and cl ick on it ! T his

should bri ng you to the event ed itor.

The event edi tor hopefull y won't contai n t oo ma n y

surprises: it i s i ntenti onal ly al most i dentical - at le ast
on first gl ance - to the regu l ar p age and pos t ed i to r
used by WordPress i tsel f.

Just as wi th a page or post, you can ad d a titl e an d

descri ption to your event. The ex pect ed controls for
savi ng i t as a draft or publishing i t are present, too:
EVENT TIME
Let's look at each of the setti ng s i n t his area in t u rn.
Fi rst, the date and ti me fiel ds.
The Start/End - thi s is simp ly when t he ev ent start s
and fi ni shes. Cl i cki ng i nto eit her d ate f i el d wi ll pop
up a date picker, where you may sel ect y our d es ired
dates from a cal endar. Event start and end times
may be sel ected from a drop-d own menu , or y ou may
enter your dates and ti mes manu al ly i f y ou prefer. If
you already checked the  All D ay E vent  box y ou wil l
not be able to speci fy a time f or y our event
The All Day Event  checkbox is u sef u l when t he ev ent
is taking pl ace on a particul ar d ate (or dates ) - bu t
you don't reall y know when, or els e f eel that i t i s
good enough to say i t takes place "all d ay " withou t
being more specifi c
EVENT VENUE
If thi s i s your fi rst ti me u si ng T he Events Cal end ar,
you'll see thi s li st of fiel ds for creati ng y our f ir st
event venue. If you've created a venu e f or a previou s
event, you'l l have the opti on of sel ecting an exi sti ng
venue from a drop-down menu (y ou may als o ty pe into
the search box to narrow y our op ti ons). Ent eri ng a n e w
venue name and sel ecti ng the  Create  option from t he
menu opti ons wil l displ ay the new venu e f orm f iel ds
bel ow, allowing you to create a new venu e f or y ou r
event.
ORGANIZERS
Rather like the venue detai ls , y ou can s el ect any pre-
existing organi zer detail s that y ou hav e alread y
entered. Al so - j ust as wi th the venu e d et ails - t his
area is completely optional.
EVENT WEBSITE
The next secti on in the New E vent A dmi n l et s y ou
(again, opti onal ly) provi de an event w eb site.

Thi s is particul arly useful i f y ou are showcasing ev e n ts

organized by external org anizat ions and they hav e a
dedicated event websi te.

EVENT COST
Once agai n you can pass on by and l eav e t hese al one if
you li ke. If you don't provide a cost, then no cost
detail s wil l be shown to visit ors. If the ev ent is actu all y
free then si mply provi de a cost of 0 (zero).
TAXONOMIES
Rather l i ke regul ar WordP ress p os ts you can t ag
events. These tags are in fact the very same tags u sed
by WordPress i tsel f.

Besi des tags, you can al so categ orize events,

It is worth emphasi zi ng, though, that these  are not   th e

same fami l y of categori es as u sed i n p os ts. Th e y
definitel y have a very si milar (in f act, i dentical ) user
interface to regul ar post categ ories - b u t t hey are i n
fact a distinct fami l y of categ ories .

In other words, if you happen to have an ex isti n g

category you use for blog pos ts, you s hou l d not expect
it to appear in the l i st of event categ ori es - and i f i t
does, wel l , i t just happens to s hare t he same name (bu t
isn't actuall y the same).
EVENT OPTIONS
Someti mes you want to be ab l e to link t o an ev ent p o st
(by emai l, or di rectly vi a a menu) b u t woul d prefer i t
isn't i ncluded i n the ma in event views - checki ng
the  Hi de from Event Li s ting s  box accompli shes ju st
that.

You mi ght al so happen to hav e a whole load of ev ents

taki ng place on the same day . .. natu rall y, t hat can
cause some probl ems i n month v iew - and so, at least
by defaul t, no more than 3 ev ents per day are show n i n
that vi ew - selecti ng  Sti ck y in Month View  helps y ou to
ensure that thi s event is o ne of the ones that   do  s how.
The questi on mark's hel p t ex t reads, "When ev ents are
sticky in month vi ew, they'l l displ ay firs t i n t he li st o f
events shown wi thin a gi ven d ay block."

The  Feature Event  option allow s y ou to d es i gnat e you r

most i mportant events f or ex tra emp has i s on y ou r
pages. Featured events w ill be highl ig ht ed i n even t
views, archi ves, and wi dgets, maki ng it a great choice
for speci al engagements that y ou'd li ke to have f ront
and center.
