PROJECT LOCATION : PROVINCE WIDE
TARGET BENEFICIARIES : SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT LEADERS A
AND COLLEGE STUDENT LEADERS

RATIONALE

In the Philippines like in most other modern societies, young adults in their late
teens and early 20s encounter a number of issues and challenges. Filipino young
adults begin to take on new adult roles and responsibilities: Most of them as they
finish high school, may begin higher education studies, enter the workforce, move
away from home, or even start a family. It has been observed the 'the young adult
is usually preoccupied with self-growth in the context of society and relationships
with others.'

The young adult period is characterized by rapid physiological, sexual, cognitive,

and emotional changes. Studies have shown that a young adult's brain is not fully
mature until around 25 years of age. The developing brain may help explain why
adolescents sometimes make decisions that are risky and can lead to safety or
health concerns, including unique vulnerabilities to depression, substance abuse,
addictive behaviors (like social media addiction). They get involved in high risk
behaviors making themselves vulnerable to criminal offences, accidents, physical
injuries, emotional trauma, pregnancy and medical problems — some of them extremely
serious like transmission of STDs and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The Provincial Government aims to intensify its campaign to empower the youth
sector. This campaign involves substantive information gathering and information
dissemination and the crafting of relevant and suitable programs and projects for
them, There is a growing need for more extensive local government interventions to
address alarming numbers that reflect the situation of our young people because of
the very basic reason that these young people form the building blocks of our
society.

OBJECTIVES

To educate and engage critical thinking in young people on specific topics that
affect their development as young adults;
To equip participants with necessary tools to tackle the challenges of “growing up”
and their transition to adulthood;
To provide young adults opportunities to present their perspectives and opinions by
inviting some of the participants to part of symposium as resource persons or to
provide testimonies of their experiences.
EXPECTED OUTPUT

Increased awareness on issues on mental health, social media, and sexual

development.
Provided guidance and inspiration to participants to take on challenges they are
currently facing or will confront in the future
Engaged participation by providing experiential testimonies to inspire other
participants
Incentives for best stories and essays on topics in the symposium.
Provide the youth with the right tools to accomplish success in life.

MECHANICS

This symposium aspires to be an annual conference in every municipality that will

include some amount of discussion or public speeches on identified relevant
subject/s. Participants who will attend this will be part of the audience for many
of the presentations. But during the course of the event, they can give their own
presentation or be part of a panel discussion.
