CHANGES OF HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN THE PHILIPPINES FROM THE PAST 7

YEARS
A Reflection Paper

Health care system of the Philippines during the past 7 years has been in great chaos
and unorganized due to some reasons that greatly affect the needs of people in
accessing and prioritizing their health and well-being. Some reasons that is present up
until now include a lot of healthcare professionals are migrating into the foreign country
decreasing the possible economy and number of healthcare workers in our country that
leads to shortage and lack of manpower in distribution of healthcare workers in
hospitals and work areas, our healthcare is behind of global innovation where there is a
slack off in terms of advancement in healthcare facilities, lack of resources, supplies,
facilities, and equipments, cutting off of the designated budget due to corruption and
shortening of necessary resources needed for healthcare, and the cost of medicine in
our country. These reasons greatly affect the workflow, vision, and mission of our
country’s health department that also affects the people who are in the poor community
because our healthcare system today in the Philippines became a privilege and luxury.

Entering and studying healthcare courses is expensive and so only those who can
afford it can make it and most of our graduates we’re self-forces not to work in our
country because of the low salary they can get making it unfair from the cost they
expense during their education. Currently, such institutions, hospitals, companies, and
even the government are now offering scholarships among students who lack financial
support in pursuing a healthcare career. Number of healthcare workers greatly
increases up to today because of the privilege they can get and offer from work areas
but there are still a number of workers that work abroad and our country still lacks
numbers of workers with a decreased percentage from the past 7 years. Additionally,
some hospitals in our country are behind innovation and lack special procedures and so
only those who can afford can experience the best healthcare. Indeed, poverty became
one of the reasons up until now why people cannot experience quality healthcare
because money is in need in every corner in order to proceed to a certain procedure.
Currently, the government has a support system in every region and province of the
country among people who are less privileged to ask for health assistance. Also, we
already have PhilHealth that is already a great help in assistance for hospitalization and
we have an insurance company that offers healthcare benefits but only those who are
financially capable can afford. Aside from that, we also cannot ignore the fact that our
hospitals don't have the necessary equipment and supplies to accommodate the
number of patients they have. There is an allocated budget in healthcare from the
government but most of the time, it slacks off because of corruption that is prevalent in
our country up until today and the need of other departments in order to fulfill their
responsibilities also. Hospitals and Health centers cannot be conducive places to
perform health because of lack of resources needed to perform healthcare procedures
and departments neglect to provide healthcare to the people who live in mountains and
other areas far from the mainland. Also, the medicine that we have here in the
Philippines are mostly imported from other countries but currently we have hundreds of
medicine facilities that work on medicine and provide medicine in our country that is way
more cheaper. Also, the government has given free medicines to the health centers to
distribute to the community.

In conclusion, the healthcare system in our country is only for privileged people. It is
true that only the privileged individuals can afford to have access to quality healthcare
while those who are financially unstable are left behind. Although the government has a
program that helps the people, we cannot guarantee that all people can be part of it
because there are still long processes. Indeed, our healthcare system has had big
changes from the past 7 years but the common reasons are still present up until now
and we don’t know when and how that problem will be resolved because of issues
happening in our country that also affects provisions of healthcare.
