Hello, good morning everyone!

I’m (your name) and I will be presenting group 4’s research entitled “The
Effects of Music on Stress of Senior High School and College Students of Different Schools in Baguio” So let’s
start. (next slide)
*AIM AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
 Music is a common resource for the regulation of emotions, moods, and stress hence this study aims at
determining the impacts of music on the stress of students.

 The purpose of this study is to inform or educate every individual including the researchers, about the
benefits of listening to music especially at times like this. This study can also help people who don’t
know how to deal with their anxiety or stress.

 Also, this study is expected to benefit the students to beat stress while studying. Improve their focus on a
given task by providing motivation and improving mood. Teachers may also use this study on how to
approach their students undergoing stress. Through this study the students, teachers, and future
researchers will become aware of the benefits of music to coping up with stress.

*METHODOLOGY
 Qualitative method is applied to this study. Our sampling technique is convenient sampling. A semi-
structured interview was conducted with the interview guide or interview questions formulated by the
researchers themselves.
NEXT SLIDE
 A total of six (6) Senior High School and College students of different schools here in Baguio are the
participants in this research. Two (2) Grade 11, two (2) Grade 12, and two (2) College students. Due to
the ongoing pandemic situation, the interview was conducted online.

 Please note that the participants signed a consent form and were briefed about the research’s purpose of
study. Datum was collected in a voluntary nature, and the anonymity of participants were upheld.

*FINDINGS (STRESSORS)
 From the datum we collected, 4 out of 6 or 67 % of the participants said that the most stressful situation
they’ve faced so far in school is from the school or subject requirements or the activities while 2 out of 6
or 33% says that their stress came from peer pressure and bullying. However, according to specific-
reaction theory, no hard and fast explanation can be categorically branded as the prime mover or shaker
of stress. Different individuals respond to stress differently.

 Also according to Desai (1999) whom classified stressors into three major categories mainly:
Physiological causes, Psychological causes, and Environmental causes. Thus, requirements and
activities as stressor is considered as environmental causes since it has the physical and social event of
giving off activities while peer pressure and bullying as stressors are considered as psychological cause
and environmental because of the physical and social events of pressuring and it causes emotional and
memory stress/ trauma.

*FINDINGS (GENRES)
 Pop music is the most heard genre in our datum, 5 out of 6 or 83% said that they mostly hear pop music.
All of them have different tastes in music considering the datum we have but pop music is the common
genre they are listening to. Other genres the participants stated are rock, religious, R&B, ballad, pop
punk, blues, classical, country, and soul music.

 Cook et al., (2017) found that preferences for pop, rap/hip-hop, soul/funk, and electronica/dance music
were positively associated with using music to increase emotional arousal. Soul/funk music preferences
were also positively associated with using music for up-regulating positive emotionality and down-
regulating negative emotionality. More broadly, energetic and rhythmic music was positively associated
with using all examined forms of musical emotion regulation, suggesting this dimension of the music is
especially useful in modulating emotions.

*FINDINGS (EFFECTIVENESS/ EFFECTS)
 All of the participants agreed to one thing which is music calms them down, it brings out emotions that
need to be brought out, music expresses their feelings and makes them relax. So, it affects the stress of
the students in a positive manner. When faced with high levels of stress in their lives, people tend to
listen to more music according to Getz et al., (2014). Music is an effective tool for stress reduction
among students. Music listening is increasingly recognized as a potentially effective method of stress,
mood, and emotion regulation (Baltazar & Saarikallio, 2019).

*CONCLUSION
 So, in conclusion, music really has been affecting stress in a positive way. Although there are different
causes of stress, music affects the students’ stress by giving them relaxation, peace of mind, comfort,
and helps them vent out emotions that needs to be brought out. They believe that music helps them heal
and overcome their stress. Listening to music can have a tremendously relaxing effect on our minds and
bodies, especially slow, quiet classical music. Music listening, and music-making/singing, have been
associated with decreases in physiological arousal. As music can absorb our attention, it acts as a
distraction at the same time it helps to explore emotions.

*RECOMMENDATION FOR FURTHER STUDY
 Future researchers are encouraged to explore or focus on the specific characteristics of music on stress
reduction, for example, the music tempo, the style of the music, the use of live music or prerecorded
music, the way the music is selected, or the frequency of the music. In future studies, the individual
factors could be approached by using larger samples with different groups.

Qualitative research is a scientific method of observation to gather non-numerical data. This type of research
"refers to the meanings, concepts, definitions, characteristics, metaphors, symbols, and description of things"
and not to their "counts or measures". This research answers why and how a certain phenomenon may occur
rather than how often. Qualitative research approaches are employed across many academic disciplines,
focusing particularly on the human elements of the social and natural…
Convenience sampling (also known as availability sampling) is a specific type of non-probability sampling
method that relies on data collection from population members who are conveniently available to participate in
study. Facebook polls or questions can be mentioned as a popular example for convenience sampling.
a semi-structured interview is open, allowing new ideas to be brought up during the interview as a result of what
the interviewee says.
interview guides are lists of the topics and questions an interviewer plans to cover during an interview with a
job candidate or other industry interviewee. Interview guides are effective tools for maintaining consistency and
direction during an interview, and they can range from highly structured interviews to relatively informal
conversations.

Why did you chose this topic for your research?

- We all know that we can't avoid being stressed. Students, teachers, or anyone can be stressed. Especially now
that there is a pandemic going on. So we want to give remedy, solution or help to reduce this stress. So we did a
research on how music affects stress so we can prove that music is a stress-reliever. And by proving that music
is a stress-reliever, we can and will try to advice anyone who is undergoing stress to listen to music.
What was the hardest thing you did or experienced during research?
- For me, the hardest thing we did in our research is the gathering of participants. Although some of us is from
here, from Baguio, we don't seem to know anyone who is studying in the other schools since that is the
requirement for being the participant. And there are also some students, who we asked, that didn't want to be
interviewed. So it's really a struggle for us to find participants for our research. We worked on our resources, we
asked our relatives or friends who have a contact with a possible participant and luckily, we did gather
participants for this research.
Are you satisfied with your research? Especially with the findings.
-For me, I don't know for my co-researchers, I am satisfied with our research. Since our goal is to know the
effects of music in stress and we have reached that goal, I'm satisfied with it. And to be honest, I am more
satisfied knowing that music can reduce stress. Because at least we can advice someone who is stressed to listen
to music he/she love or like.
What do you think will be the greatest contribution of your research paper to the society?
- I think, the greatest contribution of our research is that it will help people for their stress management. As my
co-researcher said, anyone can be stressed and that can't be avoided. So what we can do, what our research can
do is to help people for their stress management. They can read our research and know the effects of music so
they can use music to reduce and manage their stress.
