Lesson 1 Settings

nGeniusONE® Service Assurance Platform v5.5

In this Lesson you Will Learn About
• Global Settings Tabs and their purpose
– Enterprise
– Applications
– Traffic Discovery
– Locations
– Groups

©2016 NETSCOUT ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Global Settings Overview
• Values and metrics configured in Global Settings are directly
represented in the creation of services and service domains
– Client communities, parent and child applications, Locations and
Groups further define the monitoring aspect of your environment
• The more detail provided to the system, the greater the
granularity is available for service triage

©2016 NETSCOUT ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Enterprise Tab
My Network
• Optional subnet list
– Defines the range of IP addresses to be monitored when collecting
DNS and HTTP traffic
– Exclusively focusing on server communities and disregarding addresses
outside
– Except for multi-tier applications which you have some control
• Example: Salesforce.com
• Technically, My Network is meant to prevent external server IP
Addresses from appearing in Adaptive Service Intelligence (ASI)
tables

©2016 NETSCOUT ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Enable Private Network
• Clicking this check box adds default
subnets for use as "private" networks
• IPv4 subnets
– One Class A network
– 16 contiguous Class B networks
– 256 contiguous Class C networks
• IPv6 subnet
– FC00::/7

©2016 NETSCOUT ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Server Communities
• Used to create logical groupings based on service function
– Intended to more precisely focus on connections that are of the most
interest and share commonalities
• Typically, a server community would be based in the same
geography and same data center
– Example: Oracle service load balanced across three servers

Global Settings nGeniusOne Service Monitor

©2016 NETSCOUT ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY
Client Communities
• Intended to group users into logical communities regardless of
network location
– Represented in analysis views as the named label or a logical IPv4
address
• If no Client Community address is defined
– 0.0.0.0 is displayed

Global Settings nGeniusOne Service Monitor

Default Client Community Subnet
• Organizes Host Group Other entries by subnet mask
• Automatically discovers any of your Client Communities that
have not yet been configured

Default Client Community Subnet

©2016 NETSCOUT ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

VIP List
• The VIP List community is designed to pull a particular IP Address
out of the aggregated whole and track it individually
• VIP List communities accept only single IP addresses
– Not subnets

Module 1 Communities
Lesson 4

nGeniusONE® Service Assurance Platform v5.5

In this Lesson
You will learn about
• The importance of Client / Server / VIP List Communities
• How to configure Communities in Global Settings
• How Communities aid in service triage

COPYRIGHT © 2016 NETSCOUT, SYSTEMS, INC. ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Overview of Communities
• Server and Client communities associate IP addresses or ranges
with a community name
• Used to highlight client or server groups in the enterprise
• VIP is a community that accepts only single IP addresses
– Cannot configure IP address ranges
– Can be used to monitor VIP personnel or devices

COPYRIGHT © 2016 NETSCOUT, SYSTEMS, INC. ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Overview of Communities (Cont’d)
• By design, communities screen "noise"
– Provide a sharply focused picture of server and client latency
• By narrowing your sample of servers or clients
– Greatly reduces the flow entry size of data to only those community
datasets of interest
• Quickly survey hundreds of communities
– Versus hundreds of thousands of individual users

COPYRIGHT © 2016 NETSCOUT, SYSTEMS, INC. ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Overview of Communities (Cont’d)
• Server communities
– Aggregate both server and client activity specified in address ranges
• Client communities
– Aggregate Client activity only
• VIP List community tracks specific IP addresses
– Out of the aggregated whole and tracks them individually

COPYRIGHT © 2016 NETSCOUT, SYSTEMS, INC. ° CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY

Stop and Think…
Question:
What is the purpose of the VIP List Community?
• Separate client and server communities
• Pull a particular IP Address out of the aggregated whole and
track it individually
• Survey hundreds of communities

Answer:
Pull a particular IP Address out of the aggregated whole and
track it individually

Communities
Overview
• Communities lets you view traffic based on IP addresses
– Individual address or subnet
– In Service and Traffic Monitors
• Community names are aliases for IP addresses
• Makes it easier to understand monitoring and triage views
• Next, let’s look at a typical workflow
– Create Server Community
– Create Client Community
– Where they are viewed in nGeniusONE for service triage

Overview of nGeniusONE Reporting
• Document application and/or network domain service metadata for
troubleshooting and sharing information with others.

• After creating reports

– Schedule for future generation and delivery
– Include URL link in an email, or a PDF (Portable Document Format), RTF
(Rich Text Format), or CSV (Comma Separated Values) email attachment.

• In a distributed environment
– Reports defined on the Global Manager rolls up data from each Local
Server managing a data source used in the report.
– Reports defined on a Local Server use only the local data sources.
