You probably know that some dogs aren't just pets -- they hold jobs! Some dogs can
work on farms, guarding or herding animals. Other dogs can pull sleds or help people
hunt. Dogs have worked with people for thousands of years. What makes dogs such
great workers? They learn fast and they can also smell and hear better than we can.
This means that dogs can do jobs that people can't. Some of their jobs may surprise
you.
The sun was going down when the engine suddenly stopped. My older brother looked
up and down the empty, desert road.
"I should have filled up at Liwa," he said to himself.
I knew it too, but I didn't say anything.
"I think I can get a phone signal if I get higher," I said hopefully.
I climbed a nearby hill. Luckily, I had a signal and I could call my father. He came
two hours later with some petrol. But it was a long, hot wait.
I learned an important lesson that day.
An aurora is a light display in the sky caused when incoming energy particles from
the sun meet with gas molecules in a planet's atmosphere. The best known example is
the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights. It can be seen on clear nights in northern
Europe, Alaska, Canada, and Russia. But it's not just here on Earth. On planets like
Jupiter and Saturn, strong magnetic fields lead to high electrical currents in the upper
atmosphere over the planets' poles. This, too, can cause auroras in their upper
atmospheres.
If you eat a meal in Korea, there are many things that you should know. The oldest
people are usually served first, and it is bad to pick up chopsticks or eat before the
oldest people. Soups must always be on the right side of the person who is eating.
The rice bowl is never lifted up from the table, which is different from China and
Japan. Spoons should not hit bowls while eating. Some rules, however, are no longer
important. For instance, talking used to be forbidden, but today people usually talk
together at meals.
65. Which of the following statements about eating meals in Korea is false?
a. You should not pick up your nice bowl when you eat
b. Old people should be given food before young people.
c. There is a right place and a wrong place for your soup
d. You should not talk when eating meals
The events of the Trojan War are described in many works of Greek literature and
shown widely in Greek art. No single text tells the entire events of the war. Instead,
the story is assembled from a variety of sources, some with very different versions of
events. The most important sources are two poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey,
believed to have been written by Homer between the 9th and 6th centuries BC. Each
poem describes a part of the war. The Iliad covers the last year of the siege of Troy,
while the Odyssey deals with Odysseus's return home to Ithaca following the violent
sack of the city of Troy.
67- What does the word sack probably mean?
a. to be fired from a job
b. a form of Greek poetry
c. a large bag made of strong material
d. the destruction and stealing of goods
The spaghetti-tree hoax was a three-minute fake report broadcast on April Fools' Day
(April 1) 1957 by the BBC current-affairs programme Panorama, which showed a
family in southern Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family 'spaghetti tree.'
At the time spaghetti was relatively unknown in the UK, so many British citizens
were unaware that it is made from wheat flour and water; a number of viewers
afterwards contacted the BBC for advice on growing their own spaghetti trees.
Decades later, CNN called this broadcast "the biggest hoax ever from a reputable
news channel."
68- What does the word hoax probably mean?
a) news
b) pasta
c) trick
d) tree
The main excuse for why executives fail to accomplish important objectives is
because team members spend excessive time and effort on tasks such as emails and
meetings. Accomplishing ambitious goals is challenging and requires discipline.
There are four essential tactics that any executive can adopt in order to achieve
success. The first is for the team to focus on one radical goal. The second is to focus
on lead activities, essential daily actions that specifically pursue the desired outcome.
The third strategy is to monitor progress, with graphs detailing daily activities. The
fourth is to regularly evaluate progress, review challenges, and determine the best
path for success.
69- What does the reading suggest about emails and meetings?
a. Employees can spend too much time on things that don't contribute to goals
b. Emails and meetings are essential communication tools
c. Not all business leaders know to hold a productive meeting
d. Meetings should be organized according to four important principles.
The spiritual practice of meditation is thousands of years old, and yet we are just now
becoming aware of its significant benefits. Meditation has been shown to lower
stress, reduce blood pressure, relieve anxiety and more. You might think that
meditation is just sitting still or perhaps chanting a word over and over. But, actually,
there are many types of meditation, including walking meditation and tai chi. These
use patterns of movement to help take your mind off of your daily worries and reduce
tension. Experts suggest that even as little as five to ten minutes a day of meditation
can reap substantial benefits.
Who would turn down a $1 million prize for solving a math problem? Perhaps one of the world's
smartest mathematicians.
In 2010, a Russian mathematician named Grigori Perelman was awarded the prestigious $1 million
Clay Millennium Prize for having solved a geometry problem that had challenged scores of brilliant
mathematicians since 1904.
Since 2000, the Clay Institute's $1 million prize has been open to mathematicians who can find
answers to one of seven long-unsolved math problems. The Clay Institute's president, James
Carlson, said that Perelman was a mathematician of “extraordinary power and creativity" for
solving one of these, an intractable problem in geometry known as Poincaré's conjecture. For
decades, scores of prominent mathematicians had failed to solve the Poincaré 3-D geometry
challenge, sometimes described as the Mount Everest of math.
But weeks after its announcement, the institute announced that Perelman, a brilliant but
unconventional mathematician, had formally turned down the award and the million-dollar prize.
He didn't deserve it, he told the institute, because he was just following the path of fellow
mathematicians, in particular that of Richard Hamilton, a math professor at New York's Columbia
University,
Carlson disagreed. “All mathematicians follow the work of others, but only a few make
breakthroughs like this," he noted. Still, he was not particularly surprised that Perelman had not
accepted the prize, since the eccentric researcher had already turned down several top honors in
mathematics.
Four years previously, in 2006, Perelman had turned down perhaps the most well-known award in
mathematics, the Fields Medal, which, like the Clay Millennium Prize, honored his contributions to
geometry. He didn't just turn it down by phone, either. Professor John Ball, president of the Berlin-
based International Mathematical Union which awards the Fields medal (and its $15.000 prize),
traveled to Perelman's home in St. Petersburg to persuade him to accept the prize. However, after
days of negotiation and persuasion, Professor Ball was forced to give up.
Ball summed up his conversation with the 56-year-old Perelman as follows: "We offered three
alternatives: accept the award and come to the prizegiving; accept and don't come, and we would
send him the medal later; and third, not to accept the prize. From the very beginning, Perelman said
he would choose the third option, saying that prize was completely irrelevant for him. According to
him, if his mathematics is correct, then no other recognition or award is needed."
A poor and private man with long, wild hair, the 52-year-old Perelman lives in a basic apartment in
St. Petersburg with his elderly mother. Carlson said that when he spoke with Perelman in 2010, the
man had quit a teaching job at Russia's top institute in his home city and did not appear to have any
other employment. After a lecture tour of US colleges in 2006 following his Poincaré proof,
Perelman stopped responding and left the math world, despite job offers from many US universities.
"I'm not interested in money or fame," the math mastermind stated. "I don't want to be on display
like an animal in a zoo. I'm not a hero, and I don't want to have everybody looking at me."
Some fellow mathematicians agree, including William Thurston, a researcher at New York's
Cornell University, who also studied the Poincaré problem.
"We have learned from Perelman's mathematics. Now perhaps we should also learn from
Perelman's attitude to life," said Thurston.
But don't expect to learn much directly from Perelman. The reclusive mathematician refuses to talk
in public. One journalist who managed to reach him on his mobile in the Russian countryside was
told: "You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms."
71- When did mathematicians start to try to solve the Poincaré Conjecture?
a. 1904
b. 2010
c. 2006
d. 2000
74- Why was James Carlson not surprised when Grigori Perelman refused the Clay
Millennium Prize?
a. The $15000 prize was not enough for someone in Perelman’s situation
b. Carlson knew Perelman’s personality because he had met him in Russia
c. Perelman had not accepted other awards in the past
d. Carlson did not believe that Perelman’s work was good enough.
77- According to the reading, which one is probably true about Perelman today?
a. He enjoys lecturing and speaking at conferences
b. He thinks Richard Hamilton to take his prize.
c. He is angry about not being given the Fields prize.
d. He does not like to speak in Public.

For example, in England, cupcakes are generally smaller and do not have the sweet
1
topping that is popular on cupcakes in places such as America and the UAE.
She was the first to use the term ‘cupcake’, which stems from cooking the cakes in single
2
cups, such as tea cups.
These days, most people use these multi-cup pans for cooking cupcakes, but there remain
3
international differences in recipes.
This is because the muffin tins that we use to bake cupcakes in today were not available

when cupcakes were first created.
Cupcakes
The earliest description of cupcakes dates back to 1796, when Amelia Simmons
wrote about them in her cookbook.
How can employers help with these problems and make working from home better?
Discuss your ideas and support them with reasons and examples.
