An is used when the first letter of the word is or sounds
like a vowel
AEIOU (an elephant , an hour, an MG car)
(a useful gadget, used car)
Examples:
She was so upset. I felt extremely sorry for her.
Don’t work too hard. Sometimes you’ll get more done by relaxing a
bit.
I don’t think she understood the topic and her essay was rather a
mess.
