La Rondine Libretto
Act I Page 5
Act II Page 29
Magda de Civry, mistress of the banker Rambaldo, is hosting an afternoon party at her
sumptuous Parisian home. Prunier, a poet and philosopher, informs the guests that romantic love
has become the rage in Paris. Prunier reads Magda’s palm and predicts that she will fly off to the
sea like a swallow and seek love.
Ruggero Lastouc arrives at the party, the son of an old friend of Rambaldo, who is making his
first visit to Paris. Lisette, Magda’s maid, suggests that Ruggero seek the joys and pleasures of
Paris that evening at Bullier’s. Magda also decides to go to Bullier’s that evening, but disguised in
her maid’s clothes.
At Bullier’s, Magda sits down at Ruggero’s table, although he does not recognize his hostess
from earlier in the day. Magda and Ruggero fall in love. For Magda, her romance at Bullier’s is
reminiscent of a youthful romantic experience she had there in her youth.
Magda sacrifices the luxuries of her courtesan life and escapes with Ruggero to live on the
French Riviera. Ruggero wants to marry Magda and seeks his mother’s consent; he receives her
consent, with the condition that his future wife is virtuous. Magda fears that a revelation of her
past life would become a scandal that would ruin Ruggero. She reveals her past to Ruggero, and
then leaves him, returning to her life in Paris with Rambaldo.

She takes a rose from the vase and goes toward the mirror.
Magda drapes a shawl over her shoulder and starts towards the door.
“ Chi il mistero di Doretta potè indovinar?” “Who could guess the mystery of Doretta?”
Magda reaches the door, hesitates, and then returns to the mirror.
Ma sì! Chi mi riconoscerebbe? But really! Who would recognize me?

La Rondine - Act II Page 29
Act II
At Bullier’s.
There is the bustling of crowds, all seeking amusement and pleasure: students, grisettes,
mondaines, customers, and curiosity-seekers. Some sit at tables scattered throughout the
hall; others, in groups or alone, enter from a handsome staircase,
while others go up the staircase to the loge.
There is a garden in the back, lit by lamps.
There are two large arched windows from which the outside street can be seen.
There is a great profusion of flowers on the many tables. Flower-girls rove through the crowd
selling their wares, and waiters scurry from one table to another.
Ruggero sits alone at a table.
Già la danza ferve e snoda il suo ritmo e la The dance is already raging, releasing its
sua grazia. rhythm and its grace.
Pittori: Artists:
Qua, ragazze! Cose pazze! Here, girls! What craziness!
As the crowd scatters into the garden, Georgette and Gabriella emerge from the garden. A
young man is with them, and Georgette points to his shirt.
Georgette: Georgette:
Questa è una perla vera? Is this a real pearl?
Gabriella: Gabriella:
Siete ricco? Are you rich?
The girls leave the young man and approach the table where Ruggero is seated.
Lolette and other grisettes join them.
Ruggero gestures that he is irritated. The girls, repressing their mocking laughter, move on.
