INTRODUCTION
Mình soạn bộ tài liệu được soạn ĐỘC QUYỀN này với cả tâm huyết, mong bạn cảm thấy tiếng Anh
– môn nói (speaking) là điều gì đó vô cùng đơn giản, dễ dàng. Trong lúc mình soạn tài liệu, và tại
vì phong cách “nhí nhố” nên đôi khi lời giảng của mình nó không mang tính truyền thống mẫu
mực kính ngữ, hi vọng các bạn khó tính có thể thông cảm, vì mình quan niệm sự vui vẻ và hài
hước ở bài giảng sẽ giúp chúng ta nhớ bài tốt hơn, thú vị hơn.
Với tất cả khả năng ngôn ngữ của mình, 8.0+ cho tất cả các kỹ năng, mình hy vọng “một đứa con
gái nhà quê” học tiếng anh thành công như mình sẽ giúp bạn có cách tiếp cận đơn giản, thoải mái,
chân thực nhất. Một bộ tài liệu nơi mà bạn cảm thấy đủ để luyện thi không cần tham khảo thêm
bất kỳ bộ sách/tài liệu nào khác.
Bên cạnh đó, các bạn giúp Phan Quỳnh đừng chia sẻ hay mua bán bộ tài liệu này. Mình hi vọng là
học với mình các bạn sẽ thấy là: “Vật chất chỉ là phù du, tình người thì luôn còn mãi”. Đó là lý do
vì sao mình rất tâm huyết kể cả lúc biên soạn tài liệu, hay lúc giảng dạy, luôn nỗ lực mỗi ngày để
có thể truyền đạt toàn bộ kiến thức mà mình có đến cho các bạn. Hi vọng rằng những nỗ lực của

GUIDELINE.
Cấu trúc của mỗi topic sẽ bao gồm 4 phần chính: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 và Follow-up
question/Extension tùy thuộc vào mỗi topic. Các bạn lưu ý ghi âm Part 1, Part 2, mình sẽ chấm kỹ
phát âm (pronunciation), nhấn âm (intonation/stress), sửa đổi từ vựng để nâng band (words
choice) nếu bạn đã vững vàng với môn speaking. Part 3 và phần mở rộng các bạn không ghi âm,
chỉ tham khảo thêm để bổ sung từ vựng.

Question 1. Where were you born?

I was born and raised in ……… city/province which is located in ……… It takes me around 2 hours
to fly to Hanoi capital from my hometown.
Question 2. How often do you come back to your hometown?

Not very often. Now I am living in Ho Chi Minh, and I get bogged down in (= I am up to the ears
in) work/study. I would say that I just pay a visit to hometown once/twice a year.
Question 3. Do you prefer living in big cities or in countryside?

If I were to choose one of them, I would go with living in a metropolis like Ho Chi Minh city
because it offers me many job/studies opportunities and top-notch facilities such as transport
or entertainment. But when I get old, I will think about living in somewhere off the beaten
track for tranquility.

PART 2. A QUIET PLACE
DESCRIBE A QUIET PLACE


A quiet place is always a place where I can find my inner peace. So today I am
WHAT gonna tell you a tranquil place that I often go to and it is my grandparents’
hometown.
My grandparents’ hometown is a countryside in ………… province, located in the
WHERE
North of Vietnam.
Whenever I have free time, I usually go back to pay a visit my grandparents and
WHEN connect to nature, you know I am living in a metropolis – a hectic city – Ho Chi
Minh.
In this place, there are no cars horns, no companies or crowded people, you
HOW name it. But you can find breathtaking views of mountains or poetic rivers
where you can get a sense of tranquility.
I suppose if I had to answer why I am really into this place; I would say that just
because it is my hometown and you know home sweet home. Another reason
is that I consider myself as an introverted person and a nature geek as well. So,

whenever I am in nerve-racking time for study, I often go somewhere off the
beaten track like my hometown to let my hair down as well as recharge my
battery.

Question 1. Where were you born?

Sau một thoáng suy nghĩ, tôi nghĩ rằng có một vài lý do cơ bản tại sao người ta lại tràn
vào thành phố mỗi ngày một nhiều, chứ không phải là các khu vực nông thôn. Một là,
bởi vì thành phố luôn dồi dào các cơ hội việc làm và giáo dục, nhiều người muốn tìm
được công việc tốt hoặc tham gia các trường đại học uy tín ở những nơi này, từ đó, họ
sẽ có một tương lai tươi sáng hơn. Thứ hai là, các khu vực thành thị sẽ cung cấp các dịch
vụ tốt về y tế, hoặc giải trí như là rạp chiếu phim hoặc các khu mua sắm, vì vậy mọi
người, đặc biệt là người trẻ sẽ thấy điều này rất tiện lợi khi sinh sống ở đây.
After a bit of thought, I can come up with some reasons why people flock into the cities
rather than the rural areas. The most apparent reason would be that the cities offer
more employment opportunities as well as better education, many hope to find decent
jobs or enroll in prestigious/top-ranked colleges, which will ensure them a brighter
future. In addition, urban areas tend to provide top-notch facilities and services such as
health care, cinemas or shopping malls, which make cities ideal to the young.
Question 2. Should we encourage to move businesses out of big cities?

Sau một thoáng suy nghĩ, tôi cho rằng doanh nghiệp nên di dời ra các vùng lân cận như
ngoại ô, hoặc chuyển đến các vùng nông thôn. Một là, số lượng nhà máy và công ty trong
thành phố quá nhiều sẽ khiến không khí bị ô nhiễm trầm trọng do lượng carbon được
thải ra trong không khí quá mức, điều này sẽ khiến cho sức khoẻ người dân bị ảnh hưởng.
Hai là, phải phân bổ nhà máy và doanh nghiệp ở các vùng lân cận để mang lại cơ hội việc
làm cho người dân ở đó, điều này cũng giúp tránh tình trạng quá tải dân số trong một
số thành phố lớn hiện nay.
After a bit of thought, I think that businesses should be moved / resided to surrounding
areas such as suburbs, or rural areas. First, too many factories and companies in the city
will seriously pollute the air due to the amount of carbon released into the air, which
will affect people's health. Second, it is necessary to allocate factories and businesses in

the vicinity to provide employment opportunities for the people there, which also helps
to avoid overcrowding in some large cities today.

PART 1 FOLLOWING UP QUESTIONS
Question 1. How about the cost of living in your hometown?

Vì quê tôi khá nghèo và nhỏ, nên chi phí sống nơi đây vô cùng rẻ cho tất cả các sản phẩm
từ thức ăn cho đến rau củ quả. Vì đồng lương của người dân cũng khá thấp, nên vì vậy,
tiền trả cho sinh hoạt hằng ngày cũng thấp theo.
Because my home is quite/relatively poor and small (=underdeveloped), so, the cost of
living here is extremely cheap as chips for all products from food, fruits to vegetables.
However, the salary of the locals is very low as well since we do not have much
investments from the government.

As I told you, it is a small village, so the pace of life here is very slow, and the atmosphere
is peaceful/tranquil and gentle. You will never see the busiest cars/the crowded line of
cars like in the city, you, even, will hear to birds singing in the morning.

As I told you, this place is a modern urban area, so the pace of life is very fast, hustle
and bustle/hectic. Sometimes, it drives you crazy because of being sandwiched by
traffic jams.
Question 3. What is your hometown famous for?

Tôi có thể tự tin nói rằng, quê tôi rất đẹp. Nó nổi tiếng là một điểm đến của du lịch. Nơi
đây là bờ biển dài, xanh và rực rỡ. Ngoài ra, hải sản cũng là một điểm nhấn cho quê
hương tôi.
I can confidently tell you that, my hometown is beautiful. It is famous as = has gained a
reputation for a tourist destination. This is a long, blue and stunning coast. In addition,
seafood is also a highlight for my hometown.
Thật đáng tiếc. Quê tôi không nổi tiếng cho bất kỳ đặc điểm nào. Vì nơi đây khá nghèo
và chúng tôi chỉ làm nông nghiệp để sinh sống. Chúng tôi không có cảnh đẹp thiên nhiên
hay di tích lịch sử.

I am sorry to say that my hometown is not famous for any particular traits/special
features. Because it is quite poor/less developed, and we only work in agriculture/do
farming to earn a living. We even do not have natural beauty or historical relics.

Question 4. Do you prefer moving to another place?

Thành thực mà nói, tôi đã rời quê hương vào thành phố khác khi tôi 18 tuổi – đi vào đại
học. Nhưng tôi vẫn thích sống nơi mình sinh ra. Rất tuyệt vời khi chúng ta sống gần gia
đình.
Honestly/ To be honest, I left my hometown to go to another city when I was 18 years

old - going to college. But I still prefer to live where I was born. It is great when we live
close to home/our family.
Ồ, tôi vẫn sống ở đây được hơn 20 năm rồi. Tôi không có ý định nào di dời chỗ ở. Với
tôi, nơi đây là quá tuyệt vời rồi khi tôi sống bên cạnh gia đình và nó đã trở thành một
nơi thân thuộc.
Oh, I have been living here for over 20 years. I have no intention of relocating. For me,
this place is so great when I live close to my family and, of course, it has become my
home sweet home/the place where my heart is.

Question 5. What jobs do local people do in your hometown?

Công việc chính mà người dân địa phương làm đó là làm nông, Chúng tôi trồng cây lúa,
sau đó thu hoạch theo mùa vụ để kiếm sống. Ngoài ra, vì quê tôi cũng có biển nên cũng
có rất nhiều người là thợ đánh cá. Tất cả các công việc này đều phụ thuộc nhiều và thời

one of the top-ranked universities in Vietnam. I am very proud of being a student here.

Question 2. Why did you choose your major?

At first, I had no idea about what I should study in the university, then I got a piece sound of
advice from my parents that this major could bring me a decent job with handsome salaries in

Today I am going to tell you about a business that I would like to run in coming

time – it is a coffee shop.
To be honest, I am saving up money now, and I am planning to open it 2 years

The coffee shop will be located near the complex/bustling areas (like schools,

When it comes to staff, I reckon that I need some waiters who can give me a
hand in taking orders, cleaning or serving, some baristas to make the best drinks
for customers.
HOW Speaking of the decoration: it will be nice in modern but comfy and cozy
atmosphere. It will be more perfect to have a small garden, you see, my
customers will have fresh air and easily connect to nature, yup, forget the hectic
life for a while.
Taking about the reasons why I want to make this dream come true. First, I
consider myself as a coffee lover, so I hope to bring the best and tasty coffee to
WHY everyone, especially traditional coffee in Vietnam. The second thing is that this
industry is lucrative, I mean it requires low investment and fast recovery.
Believe it or not, If I run it will, I can make a killing from my own business.

PART 3.
Question 1. What are the most valuable jobs in your country?

Sau một thoáng suy nghĩ, tôi cho rằng bác sĩ và giáo viên là hai công việc danh giá nhất
trong xã hội Việt Nam. Rõ ràng, bác sĩ có thể cứu người và giáo viên có thể giáo dục con
người, vì vậy họ nhận dược rất nhiều sự tôn trọng từ người khác. Đi sâu vào chi tiết một
chút cho nghề nhà giáo, đây là công việc sẽ đóng góp trực tiếp cho sự phát triển của một
quốc gia. Một nền giáo dục tốt sẽ mang đến lực lượng lao động tốt để phát triển kinh
tế, hoặc sẽ giảm tỉ lệ tội phạm trong xã hội. Tuy nhiên, tôi cũng thấy rằng. mọi nghề
nghiệp đều quan trọng và nên được đánh giá cao trong xã hội.
After a bit of thought, I suppose doctor and teacher are the two most noble jobs in
Vietnamese society. It is obvious that doctors can save people lives while teachers can
educate people, so they command a lot of respect from others. As an in-depth view into
the job of teaching, this is a profession directly contributing to the improvement of a
nation. A decent educational system will create a strong workforce that drives the
economy as well as decrease crime rates. Nevertheless, I also believe that all professions
are equally important and should be appreciated regardless.
Question 2. Why do many people often change their jobs?

Từ quan sát của tôi, tôi cho rằng job-hopping (nhảy việc) rất phổ biến trong những năm
gần đây. Có 2 lý do chính cho điều này. Một là, nhiều người cảm thấy chán với công việc
hiện tại. Họ không hài lòng về công việc, về lương, hoặc về môi trường làm việc, vì vậy,
họ muốn thay đổi việc để tìm kiếm những đột phá mới. Hai là, sự phát triển của công
nghệ thông tin hiện đại dễ làm cho các kỹ năng công việc trở nên lỗi thời, nên nhiều
người phải thay đổi việc liên tục vì họ không thể xoay xở với các công việc liên quan đến
công nghệ, đặc biệt là nhất người làm việc thâm niên.
From my observation, I suppose that job-hopping has been gaining popularity in recent
years. There are two notable reasons for this. First, some are just bored to death by their
current jobs. Or they are unsatisfied with the nature their employments, their salaries,

or their workplaces, therefore they wish to hop in hope of new breakthroughs. Second,
the considerable growth in state-of-the-art technology tends to make people working
skills obsolete, forcing many of them to rotate jobs frequently for not being able to cope
with the advancement of technology, especially the senior workers.

Question 1. What difficulties do you have with your study/work?

Informatics. I think today computers and technology are two key fields in all areas, so

WHAT I taught swimming skills for my little sister.
3 years ago, my family took a trip to Nha Trang to let off some steam after the

most respectable and interesting show in my opinion. I think you may have

prize for the game is 1 million dollars for the winner – which is an enormous
amount of money, I think. But I suppose this is a fair prize for people with

aware of the world surrounding them. And in the future If I possible I would
definitely have a crack at taking part in the game and try to win 1 million dollars.

I wouldn’t think so. The strategy has some undeniable effects yes, for example it can
definitely gain popularity at the beginning, because you know, the actors are well-known
who have a huge number of loyal fans. But if the content of the movie is bad then, I
wouldn’t think it could become a success even though it has famous stars in it. There
have been so many examples of movies that have actors with Oscar awards but still fail
terribly due to bad storytelling.

movies, but my grandfather loves modern action movies instead. But from what I can

Concentration is my kinda thing. When you are asking me about something that
helps me stay focus effectively, you probably guess that I am talking about

music, a picture or an app. However, for me, it is a technique in yoga called
Meditation.
2 years ago, after nerve–racking time of work, I went online to something

entertaining to let my hair down. I came across a video teaching about
WHEN Medication. It inspired me a lot to be honest. You know, I consider myself as a
& hot temper person and I am easily distracted by something like noises, it is a
WHERE good chance for me to give myself a try – practice this skill to improve the
situation. Believe it or not, it worked on me totally, especially on my

To be more specific, you may know that yoga involves in stretching actions, but
Meditation involves in regulating your breath. You don’t need to go to pagodas
or mountains to do this, you can do this skill anywhere, anytime you can. All the

thing you need is focusing on your breath and your world, forget about the
surrounding things for a while, then you can keep working effortlessly without
worrying about anything else. But it takes years to master to tell you the truth.
Talking about the reasons why I am really into this technique. As I told you, I am
easily distracted by noises, phone calls, ring bell, so to stay calm and stay focus,
WHY I often found a clutter–free environment to work in the past. But since the day
I knew about Meditation, it helps me boost my productivity effectively. Besides,

There are multiple distractions which affect me a lot. The biggest one is my smartphone
which keeps buzzing constantly and takes my attention away from studies/work. The
noise from my neighbors also caused my distraction. I could not stand the bickering of
neighbors or the sound of tools/appliances they use to repair houses or cars.

I have itchy feet. I often come to intriguing landscapes to explore new things, such as new

Summer, summer is the best time for trip, especially trips to the beach. Not only because of

I tend to prefer travelling with group of people. You know, simply because I want something


WHAT I’m gonna tell you about my favorite place. That is Phu Quoc island.
You know, Phu Quoc island, located in the south of Vietnam, and it has gained
a reputation for being a paradise of resorts or the most pristine and untouched

beach in Vietnam. And what’s more, it is a perfect place for travelling and
photography.
Several months ago, my friend took a trip there and then introduced me. She
told me that it is a must-travel place. Then I googled and searched for further
information on the internet about accommodation, foods, and places of

interest. I was quite excited to visit this attraction. From where I am living now,
it is far way around 2000 kilometers and of course, it takes us around 2 hours
to get there.
You know there are many reasons why I love this place so much. Firstly, it is

world. I went for a dip = went swimming and immersed myself in water and I
HOW experienced the memorable swimming to see magnificent coral and the
magical marine life. I also took a camera with me to capture the stunning,

After a bit of thought, I can point to the main reason why people prefer natural
landscapes over the urban jungles is that they are too familiar with the concrete
constructions like office buildings, schools or factories. Therefore, they would love a
retreat to open spaces like the woods or the beaches for a change. In addition,
untouched scenery always makes people feel fresh and relaxing. Studies suggest that
the green and blue color tend to chill people out.

There are various factors contributing to the success of a restaurant. The most notable
of which is gourmet food. Without doubt, customers are willing to revisit/ pay a second
visit if they are served fresh and delicious meals. Second, good service is just as
important. Customers love professional and courteous waiters who are light on their

well as architecture design. With the somewhat limited knowledge of mine, if the
climate is hot, then the builders will construct the buildings to stay as cool as possible.

I think that skyscrapers are inevitable in the cities due to the increasing shortage of living
space. To cope with such condition, they need to build high-rises to accommodate all

In my view starting to learn when you are young is the best option, you know the

There are a lot of gray areas in defining success of a person, nevertheless, in Viet Nam,
if you have one of the followings, you will be viewed as a successful person and earn
respect from others. First, you are wealthy. Either you are born with a silver spoon in
your mouth or work your way up the ladder, if you have real estate and fancy rides, then
you are successful. Second, you are academically adept. If you have esteemed degrees,


Today, I’m going to talk about Ho Chi Minh who is

well-known in my country. He was the first President
of Vietnam who led the whole nation to
independence.
As a citizen of Vietnam, it is normal for everybody to

know him because children are educated about him
since starting to go to school. Since I knew Ho Chi
Minh, I have seen a lot of films and read a lot of books
about him. He is always my greatest idol to study and
Ho Chi Minh (1890 – 1969)
follow.
The reason why he is well-known in my country is that Ho Chi Minh devoted his life to our
nation. If he had not been born in Vietnam, our country could have been invaded by other
countries. I admire him for a number of reasons. Firstly, President Ho was a very determined
man. He showed his determination at a very young age when he decided to travel to France
to obtain knowledge, hoping to find a way to rescue the nation. During his journey, he did
various jobs to survive despite many difficulties. Being inspired by him, I have been working
very hard to fulfill my dream until I can achieve it. Secondly, I knew that Uncle Ho was very
good at foreign languages, he could speak fluently fifteen languages. In fact, I have been
studying English for ages, but I haven't been satisfied with my English. I think this is a good
opportunity to learn his experiences to improve my English level.

Well I suppose that it really depends on what the advice is about and how experienced
that old person is. But most of the time, old people have lived and experienced more
events than youngsters. If the circumstances are similar, an old person can certainly give
excellent advice to help young people avoid troubles. But since different generation has
distinctive set of problems, I am sure that some advice may not work properly

Certainly, the seniors can teach grandchildren how to live their life meaningfully, just
like what my uncle does to me, share experience, teach children how to behave in a
good manner etcetera… But of course, it may not be effective because of the age gap
and huge difference between generations. We are talking about a difference of around
50 years. So many of the lessons may be outdated or irrelevant to the children.

Recently, I have had an amazing trip to Hong Kong you know Hong Kong has
gained a reputation for a paradise of shopping and I had a really good time to
WHAT experience this in a popular street market. To be honest, I can’t remember the
name of the market distinctly coz I am not good at Chinese or Mandarin but in
English it’s called Ladies Market, which is located in the heart of Hong Kong.
The market opens from 9am to 11pm (eleven). It is quite busy from 6pm to
9pm. I got there at 7pm and people are packed like sardines in that market. I
WHEN
mean, there was super crowded and noisy, I’ve never seen any bustling street
like that in VN or somewhere else though I have travelled to many places.
There are thousand kinds of goods such as clothes, jewelry tea sets, handicrafts,
electronics, and many famous brand names are available there, but often
priced very cheaply coz many of these goods are fakes or copies. Off the top of
my head, if you can’t find what you want here, it doesn’t exist.
HOW One more thing, before the trip my friends reminded me over and over again
that ‘Let bargain when shopping’. It’s true, you know when I bought some kinds
of items as souvenirs. For every item, I made a bargain down the price by 50%
and it worked oh my god, it seems to be terrible to someone who doesn’t know
about this and of course overpay.
You know that Ladies Market left a strong impressive in mind about foods,
WHY about people you know the foods are very various and scrumptious and the
atmosphere’s very vibrant. If I have a chance I will come back and buy more.

Women are usually considered creatures of beauty, which may explain why they love
shopping and enjoy lavish costumes to a considerable degree. First and foremost, outfits
are visual indicators of personal image and personalities, hence, they want to dress
accordingly. Secondly, shopping is not only for the sake of fashion but also an effective
means of relaxation. In modern society where lots of people are under constant stress
every day, indulging oneself in some serious shopping may help to take the weight off
their mind, despite temporarily. Last but not least, women don’t usually shop for
themselves alone but most of their spending is on family and friends. They relish the

Well there are various ways actually. First, there have been an increasing number of courses
on time management skills available. Youngsters are taking them more and more seriously
nowadays. Or they can just learn on the job. That means learning from practical experience

Yes, definitely. I consider myself a environmental conscious person, a "tree hugger" if you may.
So, I take this matter mighty seriously. I always encourage people around me to cut down on
plastic bags since they take hundreds of years to decompose and replace them with paper
packaging.

I consider myself as an environmental-conscious person, I care all the problems relating to the
environment. Among those, packaging causes many issues. Plastic bags cause air pollution, soil
pollution which is detrimental to human health. Unfortunately, it takes hundreds of years to
decompose them. So recently, I say no to plastic bags and switch into using eco-friendly
products such as paper bags and paper cups. You know, convenient stores in developed
countries like Hongkong or Korea ask you to pay if you want to have plastic bags for your things,
which means that citizens there are highly aware of the environmental protection.

Yes, definitely. On rainy days, I could not run my errands. If I am outside, I will be getting

No, in the spring and fall, the temperature is neither too cold nor too hot, Vietnamese people
tend to go trekking or climbing. When summer comes, people can choose from a variety of

name it. But in winter, it is not appropriate for outdoor exercises, so they prefer to stay at
home for resting or lounging around.

Question 2. What jobs can be affected by different weather conditions?

Well, foremost, I'd say they are outdoor jobs. Construction worker is the most notable example
of this type. Heavy rain or intensive heat can cause great suffering for these workers as well as
hinder their work rate. But for me, the most vulnerable job before weather would be farmer.
A drought or a flood, even minor one, stricken at the critical time, can decimate the crop,
rendering them penniless.

there are those who come for the scenery. Viet Nam is also blessed with magnificent natural
beauty, from imposing ranges of mountain and amazing stone caves to sunny beaches laden
with coconut trees.
Question 2. What do you think are the impacts of tourism in your country?
Well, tourism has great impacts on our society and economy. On the bright side, it brings a
good flow of income, especially for coastal provinces where most residents live in poverty. It
creates thousands of jobs with lucrative pay which help them make a living in their own
hometown. But on the other hand, tourism is infamous for its negative impacts on the local
environment. Irresponsible littering from tourists as well as service providers is the major
issue, along with the tampering with untouched nature for the purpose of tourism.
