(Text 1)
W: Congratulations! I heard your football team is going to play in the state
match.
M: Yeah, we’ve been all working really hard recently!
(Text 2)
M: I just made dinner only for you and me, but Dad called a few minutes ago to
say that he and two of his friends will come in ten minutes.
W: Don’t worry. We can run downstairs to that Chinese restaurant and buy
some food for them.
(Text 3)
W: Dr Smith is an economist. He’s just finished writing a book on international
trade.
M: Oh? That’s my field, too. I work for the United Nations, and I have published
nine essays.

(Text 4)
W: I’m having a lot of trouble with math. I’m afraid I’m going to fall behind.
M: Why not look for a tutor? I was about to drop chemistry before I got a tutor to
help me out.
(Text 5)
M: It’s July 10 already. I thought Jim was supposed to come back today. Why
isn’t he here yet?
W: Oh, he decided to delay his return date. He’ll be back the day after tomorrow.
(Text 6)
W: Honey, this is such a beautiful lake!
M: Yes. It’s a wonderful place to swim in the summer.
W: Yeah. We should come here with the children next time. By the way, why is
this pool called Byron’s Pool?
M: As you can guess from the name, it has something to do with Lord Byron.
When Byron was studying in Cambridge University in 1805, he often spent
time in this village.
W: And did he swim in this lake?
M: Yes. The stories say that he often went swimming here in the moonlight. Hey,
do you want to go into the village for afternoon tea after we finish swimming?
W: Why not? We still have a lot of time today, don’t we?
(Text 7) 内江竞赛
M: What about going skating tonight, Lisa?
W: I’d like to, but I already have plans. I’ve promised Susan I’ll go to the King’s
Art Centre with her.
M: What are you going to do there?
W: We’re going to check out two life drawing classes and then decide which one
to take.
M: What are the two classes?
W: One is called King’s Life Drawing Group and the other is Graduate Society
Life Drawing Group.
M: Are the classes given daily?
W: No. The first is on Wednesday evenings and the other is on Thursday
evenings.
M: When do they begin?
W: They both begin at 8:00 pm and end at 10:00 pm. So do you still want to go
skating tonight or would you rather go to the centre with us and learn about
the classes?
M: I’m really interested in drawing, so I think I’ll join you and Susan tonight.
W: Great. See you tonight.
(Text 8)
W: Were you born here in New York City, Ted?
M: No. I was born and raised in Bridgetown. When I was in high school, my
mother moved to Chicago for work and then to New York City.
W: Why did you come to New York City? To live with your mother?

3
M: No. Actually my mother always wanted me and my two sisters to go to college
in the US, so when it was time for me to go to college, she asked me to come
to the US.
W: Did your sisters come to the US before or after you?
M: I was the youngest of the three of us, so I was the last one to come to the
States.
W: Was it difficult for you to leave your home?
M: No, not really. I’d always really looked forward to coming to the US, so I
didn’t feel sad at all to leave my home country.
W: Do many people in your country leave home for the US?
M: Yes. It’s typical for us to go to the United Kingdom or to the US for our
education.
(Text 9)
W: Now, Mr Hardy, has the situation changed since last night?
M: No, it hasn’t. Mrs Hamilton is still there, and she’s still refusing to talk to us.
W: Well, what are you going to do?
M: It’s a very difficult situation. We’d like her to come out peacefully, but she’s a
very stubborn lady!
W: Stubborn? Yes, well, it is her home.
M: I agree, and it’s been her home for a long time, I know, but nobody else
refused to move. You see, a lot of people in this area are living in sub-
standard accommodation and we are going to build over 300 flats on this
site. Families are expecting to move into them next year! It’s all being delayed
because of one person!
W: But Mrs Hamilton was born in that house.
M: Of course, of course, but we have promised to give her a modern flat near a
park immediately, a very nice flat which is ideal for an elderly person living
alone.
W: So, what happens next?
M: I don’t know. I really don’t ... but we can’t wait forever. The police will have to
do something soon. It won’t be easy.
(Text 10)
I stayed at my brother’s last summer. While I was staying there, I saw that
my brother often gave candy to his 10-year-old daughter. At first I thought my
niece was suffering from a disease that made it necessary for her to eat candy.
Later I found out that my brother gave her candy just to get her to behave. I was
really concerned. Eating too much candy can be very harmful to a child’s health.
I talked with my brother about that, and he decided to stop giving his daughter
candy.
So what are the harms of eating too much candy? Firstly, eating too much
candy harms a child physically. Children who eat too much candy may suffer
from obesity, poor nutrition and tooth problems. It’s a fact that too much sugar
can cause people to put on weight. However, many parents don’t know that
overweight kids might be suffering from poor nutrition. In addition, the problem

of bad teeth may lead to severe illness and, in extreme cases, even death.
Eating too much candy also has the potential to cause psychological
damage. A study found that nearly 70% of violent criminals grew up eating
candy every day as children. In my opinion, if you love your children, it’s time to
stop giving them candy now.
