Using its well-earned popularity, the biennial Bordeaux

For something more intimate, the numerous wine bars
dotted throughout the centre, such as that run by the CIVB,

BOURG
A DAY IN BLAYE AND BOURG
Facing the vineyards of the Médoc that crown the opposite bank, the hills of
Bourg-sur-Gironde and Blaye are home to an atypical soil for wine production.
Two wine routes pass through these lands: one via road and the other via water.

Onboard La Sardane- a boat with a 20-metre steel hull that transports up to 70

passengers on a cruise along the Gironde river- watch the landscapes pass by,
slowly. The blonde waters of what was once known as “The River of Bordeaux”
open up out onto a fascinating world, guarded by the square-dipping nets
posted by the fisherman on the banks. At the heart of Europe’s largest estuary the
isles of a long-forgotten archipelago emerge- Patiras, Bouchaud, Nouvelle, Fort
Paté, Verte, Nord, Cazeau, Margaux, and Macau- bearing witness to an age-old
dialogue between mankind and the river. On the right bank lie the ports of Bourg
and Blaye. Both have recently opened pontoons to welcome small cruise ships
and have plenty to offer to visitors stepping off the boat, including wine from the
Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux and Côtes de Bourg appellations, as well as the estuary’s
unique, rich historical heritage.

Château La Dominique

CONTEMPORARY “CELL-ART”
WINE CELLARS
The Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés Château La
Dominique and Château Faugères are taking part in
a wave of architectural renewal among the vineyards,
with contemporary buildings that integrate
perfectly into the landscape. At Château Faugères,
the enormous, futuristic wine cellar designed by
Mario Botta plays with light, rising up as a veritable
contemporary cathedral dedicated to wine. The
wine cellar at Château La Dominique is of a different
style, with Jean Nouvel creating a stripped-back,
pareddown 600-m² cellar. Above the sumptuous
red multifaceted fermenting room lies the estate’s
restaurant, blessed with a panoramic terrace where
you can dine (gourmet set menu at €39) while
enjoying a 180° view over the vines of Saint-Émilion
and Pomerol.

THE VINEYARDS OF GRAVES & SAUTERNES

GRAVES &
SAUTERNES
Vignobles en Graves et Sauternes © Mathieu Anglada

A DAY IN GRAVES AND SAUTERNES

It was in Graves, to the south of the city, that the first Bordeaux vines
were planted, over 2000 years ago. As the cradle of Bordeaux’s fine wines,
these lands tell the story of the region’s long journey to becoming the gold
standard for winemaking across the world.

Surrounded by the Graves appellation, a small river with magical powers

crosses through the Sauternes AOC geographical zone: the Ciron, or “the
gold from the sands”. Her source is in the Landes and she winds through
Graves and Sauternes before reaching the Garonne upstream of Bordeaux.
Along the river’s 100 kilometres, there are great walking, cycling and
canoeing opportunities. Under the foliage of the forest, sheltered from the
sun, the water remains cold, creating a morning mist in the autumn that
leaves a microscopic fungus on the nearby grapes: Botrytis Cinerea, more
commonly known as “the noble rot”. This natural phenomenon increases
the amount of sugar in fruit and provides the Sauternes appellation with
the most famous sweet white wines in the world, blessed with a miraculous,
naturally sweet character.

86
THE VINEYARDS OF GRAVES & SAUTERNES

LANDS OF
CONTEMPORARY ART
The lands of Graves and Sauternes give you a glimpse
of the wealth of opportunities and the diverse range of
wine tourism options found along all of the Bordeaux
Wine Routes. From illustrious Grand Crus Classés
like Château d’Yquem to small family properties,
the local winemakers have opted for unusual tasting
experiences, interactive tours, original workshops and
cultural offerings to break traditional wine traditions
and make their work more accessible to as many as
possible. At Château Smith Haut-Lafitte- a Graves cru
classé- we can learn about the work of a cooper, walk
“In the steps of a winemaker” or in the Forest of the
Senses, or roam a 10-hectare Land Art space where
you can enjoy the work of local artists. Here, we finish
with a tasting workshop they call “Lands of wine and
art”. There’s a similar vibe in the Jardin Millésimé

which offers a plant-based scenography over 4000 m2

essential to the production of the red wines of Graves

of colours, smells and tastes, so typical of the
region, can be found every Saturday morning at
the market in Cadillac. It is the largest market
in the south of the Gironde department and
has been a gathering place for local producers
around the fortified town and along the
ramparts for more than eight centuries.

LAND OF WINE,
ART AND HISTORY
For more than a millenium, the history and
cultural identity of the Entre-Deux-Mers region
have been tied to the vine. Farms, hamlets and
fortified villages bear witness to the region’s rich
medieval past through their vestiges from the
Middle Ages: houses, mills, bastides, country
mansions and Romanesque churches and
more. A 47-km cycling track- “La Piste Roger
Lapébie”- was created in the 2000s along an old
railway between Latresne and Sauveterre-de-
Guyenne, allowing you to cross Entre-Deux-
Mers by bike and visit the fortified towns of
Créon and Sauveterre, as well as L’abbaye de
la Sauve Majeure: an old abbey built in 1079
and a masterpiece of Romanesque art, listed
as a UNESCO World Heritage in the Santiago
Compostela trail category. It was here that the
Benedictine monks first cleared the Silva Major
forest to plant vines and shape this viticultural
landscape that has stood the test of time.
