Theater Feeling

The origin of theatre is the feeling that gathers

people, and concentrating their attentions to a
central area, which is the beginning of a stage.
The feeling is related to some geometric feature,
such as. the centrality in plan and steps in section.
Waterfront

It is human nature to step down from stairs to get close to the

water. As all the shores of the lake are abrupt straight banks, the
stratage of the north shore is to create public steps towards the
water and sunshine, a place where the students can really enjoy
the lake view.

Auditorium

The basic geometric feature that defines a theater

is the centralized steps. The semi-eclosed place
gives a sence of actor and audience characters,
and stimulates gatherings and shows.

Public Space

The grand escalier before an auditotium has long

been a place of social life. It is a common ground
which eliminates the characters of actor and audi-
ence, generating an atmosphere of openness. Opera Garnier, Paris

4
Public Gallery

The gallery under the slope provides a flat and open space, an exten-
sion ofthe public realm.

The prototype of the gallery is a historical reference of the plaza be-

fore a Greek amphitheatre, allowing spontaneous social life and club
activities on campus.

Amphitheatre

The steps of waterfront forms a grandstand towards the lake, a natu-

ral expression of publicity.

The curves of the steps generates a gathering and focusing ten dance
of audience.

Professional Theatre

The broad grandstand gives a theatre feeling, defining a territory of

performance of all kinds.

The inserted boxes set several sections on the wide steps, defining
the professional theatres in the boxes and the informal theatres be-
tween the boxes.

PATTERN of Market

17
Bottom-up

The flea market is an excellent example of self-organization

study, where vendor stalls and customers follow simple
disciplines, and forms a spontaneous pattern.

A flea market is always the matter that keeps an undevel-

oped area alive.

18
Context and Inhabitants

The different residential building types form a hybrid urban

fabric, and the flea market phenomenon takes place in the
intersection of the clusters. The newly developed point block
have a huge setback from the road, leaving an undefined
ground, which is now occupied as the flea market.

Flea market and Waste Industry

The market is deeply rooted in the context, and a serious of

joints can be found in the network of fluid space that supports
the flea market. A major rubbish dump in the area is at the
back of the market, interconnected with the stalls and a higher
waste network.

Collective Behaviors

Continuous Shooting

3 Cameras were set in the towers and the low rise build-
ing beside the site, to get a whole view of the site and
surroundings. The shutter was pressed every 3 seconds,
recording the position of the people in the market.

Frame by frame I point out every person in the scene and

draw a track for each of them.

Processing of Average Speed

With a orthogonal grid in the perspectives and the plan,

the points were transferred on the plane, making it pos-

sible to pursue higher resolution data processing, the
average speed mapping.

The speed map indicates the pedestrian volume of each

possible path, and shows the pass and stay rate, high-
lighting the active spots in the site. t=3"

31
Library Expierence

The library is not just a store of information, but a

place that provide s intensive stimulation, and a li-
brary feeling. Atrium and wall shelves are elements
that reca ll a library feeling.

32
The border of the building follows the coherent street wall,
and parallel to the surrounding buildings.
The atrium is defined by the roads and blocks axises.

The typical linear array pattern forms a standard, anonymous

place like a supermarket. The search of books is an indirect pro-
cess with the help of catalog cards or computers.

Searchable Space

The atrium functions as a content of different themes and cat-

egories, decorated with varied atmospheres, making the search
of books convenient and enjoyable.

Common Interests

The layered space creates a space for the people with common
interests. The gathering of people with common topic gener-
ates the potential of communication.

Spatial Ritual

Bookshelves

The shelves contains structure, service and

staircases, and defines movement along
and across the shelves.

Reading Space

The shelves define an open structure, like

the typica l f loors defined by the slabs in
the skyscraper.

Atrium

Th e atrium dominates the ce ntra li zed

space. It is a place w here people can searc h
all categories of books. It provides a place
w ith a theatre feeling, which is the focus
of the people around .

35
Staircase and Service

The space between shelves contains intensive service

and stair cases, creating a scale transform with nar-
row and calm experience .

The diffused sunshine highlights a place with spiritual-

ity, a place to meditate and communicate while read-

REVIVAL of Facade

Name of project: Office Tower and Commercial Complex

39
Facade is Dead

The clean and smooth surface of the contemporary

mega buildings is more of a form expression, an iconic
gesture than a surface of city life. The facade has be-
come a production of curtain wall industry, rather than
a representation of the space, program and structure
of the interior.

40
Detachment of Facade

Tower
-Skin Tricks

Owing to its height and scale, the facade of high-rise

buildings is detached from the intensive programs in-
side, becoming merely a visual display of novel skins.
The manipulation of volume and facade has lost the
urbanological meaning.

Podiums
- Sign Boards

The podium as commercial space contains giant atri-

ums, creating a theme park, an isolated world of won-
ders. Thus, the facade is blind and solid, a sign board of
advertisements and stimulating icons.

Facade Space

Strip the Facade

As the scale of the high-rise buildings leads to unavoid-

able detachment of surface and solid, what if we strip
the facade and create a continuous public space on
the surface? A reversed typology is generated, making
the facade of the building a intermedia of the interior-
exterior communication.

Pedestrian Network

The plot is on the intersection of comercial, residencial

and office buildings, and is an important joint in the
commercial and pedestrian network.

The layout of the volumes is 4 separated squares of

tower, podium, and a plaza, leaving the passages which
intergrates with the pesdestrain system.

View of the Comer

As a corner of the entire business zone, the tower steps

back from the corner, leaving a visual corridor open to
the city.

The frame consists of simple volumes shows the city

The facade opens to the plaza, forms a colonnade space with street furni-
ture, a semi-outdoor space interacts with the plaza.

Bus Station
A passage connects the bus station with the inner plaza, providing direct ac-
cess to the office tower and the commercial podium.

47
48
In-between

The tense surface covering all 3 volumes forms a

continuous variable section space, as the facade of
the building. Unlike the atriums in the shopping mall,
the surface space is closely related to the real world,
manifesting the activities inside the building.
