A Safety Net

1. Compare flight records to a speeding ticket. Both contain structured and text
fields. Why is the text field necessary?

 FDR (Flight Data Recorder) - a computer that records basic aircraft performance
parameters. An FDR's aim is to collect and record data from a variety of aircraft
sensors onto a medium that can withstand an accident while speeding ticket is
a ticket issued for driving above the speed limit.
 Text fields are necessary to analyze an incident in a more accurate and specific
way. It assists in the development, import, and management of taxonomies, as
well as the auto-categorization of text records based on those taxonomies.Within
a given subject, taxonomies are categories and subcategories.

2. The challenge in developing software for text analysis is to give the software
the ability to understand: (1) the meaning of the same word in two different
contexts, and (2) different words (synonyms) that have the same meaning in a
given context. List three examples of a word that means two different things in
the context of two different industries (such as police work and flight).

 Roll – Aircraft rotation along the longitudinal axis, which runs from the nose to
tail.
- a briefing "where supervisors take attendance, inspect uniform and
equipment, inform the oncoming shift of any outstanding incidents that may have
occurred, inform officers of suspects to be looking out for, relate any law or
procedural changes, and so on.

 Sideslip – An aircraft movement that typically aligns with the lateral force of the
wind and results in a sideways flow.
-to avoid (a punch) by moving the body or head quickly to one side

 Overshoot – Landing air craft beyond the runway.

- is the occurrence of a signal or function exceeding its target.

3. Why is it so important that airlines share their flight record resources in

trying to predict accidents?

 It is important to share airlines’ flight record to predict accidents because

Investigators look at the incident from any angle and find out what went wrong
and how to keep it from happening again. Surprisingly, the rarity of injuries is the
key reason that so little can be observed right now. It's almost impossible to
predict future disasters based on past disasters. As a result, the department
employs computer models to identify possible threats.
