Chapter I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

With the rapidly increasing urbanization and population growth along with

the changing consumption pattern, the amount of global solid waste generation

has increased significantly over the years. In 2012, 1.3 billion tons of solid waste

was generated by urban population globally which is about 48% increase over the

past 10 years and it is expected to increase to 2.2 billion tons by 2025 (Hoornweg

& Bhada-Tata, 2012).

According to Bernard & Mildred (2015), solid waste management is a

growing concern and to effectively manage solid waste is a major challenge for

any country. It remains inadequate in most of the cities of developing countries,

where a significant portion of the population do not have access to a waste

collection service and only a fraction of the generated waste is collected.

Management of solid waste in the Philippines has long been a responsibility

of the Local Government Units (LGUs) in the country since the enactment of

Republic Act 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of

2002. Yet, there are still barangays that fail to comply with the mandate of the

government regarding proper waste disposal.

1
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

In the absence of effective and efficient solid waste management systems,

residents in barangays resort to bad environmental practices to get rid of their

waste. The waste generated from various human activities can result to health

hazards and have a negative impact to the environment. Thus, it is expected that

damage to the environment and adverse health effects would persist, and even

more risks shall arise, unless appropriate measures are immediately implemented

by the local government.

On a side note, there are also factors influencing improper waste disposal

among households. Solid waste management is not solely the responsibility of the

government in developing countries; but, it is also the responsibility of the residents

(Igbinomwanhia & Ohwovoriole, 2012). The low level of environmental

consciousness of the residents is partly responsible for the difficulties encountered

in implementing and enforcing environmental laws and policy, particularly, laws on

cleanliness and sanitation. The common observation is that people are apathetic

and indifferent toward waste issues (Bennagen, Nepomuceno, & Covar, 2002)

The purpose of the study is to lessen the solid waste in the community such

as plastic, rubber tires, etc. to use it as a substitute to other material use in

producing hollow blocks. These material were to mince and use as a material that

can give hallow blocks more durability than the normal hollow block.

2
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Brief Background of the Study

Hollow Block is a Type of Concrete Block Used for building internal and

external walls hollow concrete block saves time in building walls due to its large

dimensions. Due to the load-carrying capacıty, the Hollow Block is playing an

important role in the construction industry. Hollow blocks are made using molds

and a suitable additive depending on your location and your project. It is believed

that concrete blocks are one of the most popular construction materials which are

used in the construction industry almost everywhere. Cement is used to bond

components in order to produce stronger and longer life hollow blocks. (V. M.

Thorat , Mahesh Papal , Vivek Kacha , Tushar Sarnobat , Swapnil Gaikwad,

2015)

A concrete block is primarily used as a building material in the construction

of walls. It is sometimes called a concrete masonry unit (CMU). A concrete block

is one of several precast concrete products used in construction. The term precast

refers to the fact that the blocks are formed and hardened before they are brought

to the job site. Most concrete blocks have one or more hollow cavities, and their

sides may be cast smooth or with a design. In use, concrete blocks are stacked

one at a time and held together with fresh concrete mortar to form the desired

length and height of the wall.

The use of aggregates for construction is one of the most important parts

of construction for it will add strength to the concrete. Finding a substitute for the

3
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

aggregates used today is a task that is worth studying because the quarrying of

aggregates from rivers and mountains harms the environment. If a substitute for

aggregate can be obtained naturally and the source is abundant and can be

regenerated, obtaining the aggregate would deplete its source. (V. M. Thorat ,

Mahesh Papal , Vivek Kacha , Tushar Sarnobat , Swapnil Gaikwad, 2015)

The importance of the study is to give the hollow blocks a durability that

surpasses the normal hollow blocks using non-biodegradable materials. Since it

is using solid wastes as a primary material, the cost of each blocks should also

be affordable than the normal blocks. This research intends to study the

possibility of using recycled hollow blocks with the local concrete blocks for the

purpose of building construction with the focus of verifying compressive strength.

Hollow blocks are often to use to build large structures like boundary fences, our

hollow blocks has lighter weight also makes them easier to lift because it’s not

pure sand, it has recycled plastics and other disposable products that we may

mix in the blocks. Environmental benefits will save the trash by utilizing plastics

and other disposable materials inside the blocks.

Objectives of the Study

The overall objective of the study is to determine the feasibility of Eco-

Blocks in the market. To achieve this, the proponents set specific objectives as

follows:

1. To determine the market feasibility of the service by identifying

methodology, the SWOT Analysis, and by developing an effective market

strategy in the providing services;

2. To determine the technical feasibility of the study through identifying;

3. To determine the management feasibility of the project by identifying the

appropriate form of business organization in its compliance with the legal

requirements for the business to operate;

4. To determine the company’s financial position and its earnings

performance; and

5. To determine the benefits of the business to the economy.

5
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Definition of Terms

For better understanding and interpretation of the feasibility study, the

proponents present the following terms conceptually and operationally:

Swot Analysis. A significant strategic tool to get an idea about your company’s

capabilities and loopholes in the market.

Flexibility. Emphasizes the willingness and ability to adapt to change, particularly

regarding how and when work gets done.

Market Feasibility. Determines the depth and condition of a particular real estate

market and its ability to support a particular development.

Technical Feasibility. Evaluates the details of how you intend to deliver a system

or solution to the customers. It is an excellent opportunity for long term planning.

It is also a vital troubleshooting device for management.

Methodology. A contextual framework' for research, a coherent and logical

scheme based on views, beliefs, and values, that guides the choices researchers

make. It comprises the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles

associated with a branch of knowledge such that the methodologies employed

from differing Academic discipline vary depending on their historical development.

6
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Market Strategy. It refers to a business's overall game plan for reaching

prospective consumers and turning them into customers of their products or

services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this feasibility study will be conducted with the purpose of

enhancing the workability and strength parameters, specifically the compressive

strength of concrete hollow blocks. The study focuses on the utilization of plastics

and other waste materials which is plastic. This study shows 57% difference in the

strength by using plastic compared to local concrete blocks. This proves the

necessity for further research regarding concrete mix design, amount of cement

and properties of local concrete blocks as well as other technical and non-technical

aspects to determine the appropriate mix design and feasibility in the production

industry. Since plastic waste takes years to decompose, inappropriately dumped

plastic materials that causes flooding. So, instead of dumping such plastic waste

products, one way to alleviate those issues is to repurpose them. In this

experiment, we will show how to make hollow blocks out of plastic waste. We throw

away huge amounts of polymer every day in the form of plastic bottles, cartons,

and yogurt pots. According to experts, 25% of polymer waste is unsuitable for

recycling for three reasons: it is economically unprofitable, and it is too dirty. The

waste plastic was collected and cut into small pieces. Collecting plastic wrappers

and other plastic waste and reusing or turning them into new items to improve the

7
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

environment this project may be useful in the home. These plastic wastes can be

reused more efficiently. While solving the plastic waste problem in the Philippines

has a long way to go, there are continuous initiatives among Filipino communities

to help address the problem.

One of the major advantages of this blocks is their high durability. Concrete

hollow blocks are compacted by high pressure and vibration, which make

the blocks very strong and able to withstand a high level of loading with the use of

cement. They also have high fire resistance and no salinity which reduces their

maintenance cost.

Our blocks may be produced with hollow centers (cores) to reduce weight,

improve insulation and provide an interconnected void into which concrete can be

poured to solidify the entire wall after it's built and because of crushed egg shells

also the cement will be paste and it will make it stronger than the pure concrete

blocks, with high durability and good insulating properties.

The strategic way for the feasibility project are the costs that will be incurred,

location of business, number of competitors and its impact on the socio-economic

environment. The cost for the project to be established will affect the profit

generation of the project. Starting a hollow block manufacturing plant is not that

profitability because people think the production is not in demand but there are

many things to consider in doing a hollow block like the solid waste. As we all know

the waste is one of the most common problems in the country. So the proponents

8
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

come up to use the solid waste for the hollow block to lessen the coconut shell and

fiber waste here in San Celestino. The location should also be considered because

it can dictate how profitable the business will be. The proponent’s location is near

or at the center of the target market’s place of the work. There are a lot of

competitors the project possibly may not be feasible. If this case, there are

approximately 8 competitors but the project offers a lot way different than the

competitors. In considering the impact on socio-economic environment, the project

reflects to lessen the waste in the country. It is feasible because there is a high

demand in market at San Celestino, Batangas and as for the technical the costing

is low.

Methodology

This section describes actions to be taken to investigate a research problem

and the rationale for the application of specific procedures or techniques used to

identify, select process and analyze information applied to understanding the

problem thereby, allowing the reader to critically evaluate a studies overall validity

and reliability. In short, this methodology section used to discuss the research

design, respondent of the study, data gathering instrument, data gathering

procedure and statistical treatment of data for the proposed product.

Research Design

The descriptive approach will be used by the researchers in study design

since it is used to explain the characteristics of the population or condition being

studied, and the results will be used to develop strategies and techniques for

creating better products and innovations. The proponents would use this approach

to develop a plan and gather reliable information about the current business

situation. The proponents will obtain opinions and knowledge from the survey,

which will aid researchers in sample size about potential developments based on

the current situation.

11
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Subject of the Study

The selected subjects of the study are the household from rural and urban

areas in Lipa City. The researchers chose their target market because they are

considered as the potential buyers of the product. On the other hand, the

proponents prepared questionnaires that will be distributed to target market.

Data Gathering Instrument

The proponents will use survey questionnaires to get the necessary

information needed in the study. The survey type will be spread through social

media groups in the target areas. The findings of the survey will be used to discuss

the purpose of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The instrument used was a researcher-made questionnaire checklist to

gather the needed data for the respondent’s profile. The draft of the questionnaire

was drawn out based on the researcher’s previous studies, readings, published

and unpublished thesis relevant to the study and also professional literature.

In the preparation of the instrument, the requirements in the designing of

good data collection instrument were considered. For instance, statement

describing the situation or issues pertaining was toned down to accommodate the

knowledge preparedness of the respondents. Open-ended options were provided

to accommodate to free formatted views related to the topics or issues. In this way,

12
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

the instrument is authorized to obtain valid responses of the respondents.

Preference for the use of the structured questionnaire is premised on several

research assumptions such as cost if being a least expensive means of gathering

data, avoidance of personal bias and less pressure for immediate response and

giving the respondents a feeling of anonymity.

As for the data gathering, the first step before going to the testing proper is

to make a request letter. Upon approval, the researcher retrieves the request letter.

The deans as well as class advisers and other faculty members were selected in

the administration.

In administering the questionnaire, the researcher was use the time allotted

for vacant to avoid distraction of managing the business. The respondents will be

given enough time to answer the questions. After data gathering, the researcher

now collected it for tallying the scores and to apply the statistical treatment to be

used with the study.

13
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Statistical Treatment of Data

Demand

The term “demand” signifies the ability or the willingness to buy a particular

commodity at a given point of time. Demand is the major contributor to the profit of

any businesses. Without the demand of the market, there will be no existing

business to offer service or product.

Major Consumer of the Product

Consumers are the persons who avail the product and services. They are

the most important components for a business to succeed, without them there will

be no business since a business is made for the consumers. The major consumers

of the products and services are the household of the urban areas of Lipa City,

Batangas and any individual who are interested in buying or purchasing the

products or services to be offered.

Historical Demand

In order to determine the historical demand, the proponents get the total
number of household population of Lipa City. After determining the number of
retailers, the proponents can now determine the historical demand of the product.

The table below shows the expected number of demands for the Eco-Block
construction supply, Inc. will offer.

Supply

Supply is known to be the quantity and type of goods available in the market
at the given time. If there is a little amount of supply in the market and a great
number of demands are present, there is a chance for a few investors or
entrepreneurs to fill it. For the researcher it can only mean one thing, the product
or service they are conducting would most likely be feasible.

Historical Supply

Historical supply will be determined through the use of data collected from
the retailers with related products. The historical supply will be used by proponents
in computing the projected supply.

Market Share

Market share is the percentage of the total market that a company controls

for a particular product category. The market share is computed by dividing

projected sales by market gap. The proponents will find out if the competitors will

be able to fulfill all the demand of the consumer for product to be offered. This is a

great opportunity for the proponents to pursue the product.

Projected Sales
Market Share =
Market Gap

SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis is the strategic planning method that is used to evaluate

the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the business ventures.

Basically, it is the first stage of planning that would help every venture on operating

their business. It can also assess the potential of the business.

Strengths

- Good Quality, More Durable, Promotional Advertisement

- The product is made up of non-biodegradable materials to make the

product, which made it more durable than other hollow blocks.

18
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Weaknesses

- Loyalty to other stores, Acceptability to the market

- Acceptability was seen as flaw by advocates because it is difficult to

gain customer acceptance when a company lacks proof or evidence

that it is successful.

- Loyalty to others. Since customer who are loyal to other stores, they

wouldn’t buy except for their trusted stores.

Opportunities

- Ease availability of raw materials, Competitive Advantage, No nearby

competitors.

- Ease availability of raw materials. The ease availability of raw materials

is an opportunity because non-biodegradable materials are readily available

within the municipality.

- Competitive Advantage. It is also considered a strategic advantage

because it is Eco-Blocks and construction Supply, Incorporation advantage

for making more robust and lower-cost hollow blocks than its rivals.

- No nearby competitors. San Celestino is at the center of four barangays

that have not yet offered such services.

19
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Threats

- Effectiveness of promotional advertisement, Competitors.

- Effectiveness of promotional advertisement. The promotion’s success

is also in risk. Because getting the campaign does not guarantee that it will

pull in a large number of customers, advocates are still doing their part to

catch and retain them through these methods.

- Competitors. Competitors reacts to the strategic actions you take in the

marketplace, and your company has to react to their strategic moves.

Marketing Strategies and Programs

Marketing strategy is the company’s game plan in penetrating the market

and successfully turning a prospective consumer into a customer. It includes the

discussion of the product, price, place and promotion. A marketing strategy

contains the company’s value proposition, data on targets customer,

demographics, and other high level elements.

20
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Product

The proponent’s product proposal are produced primarily as a means of

managing consumed plastic by sequestering it and containing it safely, by

terminally reducing the net surface area of the packed plastic to effectively secure

the plastic from degrading into toxins and micro plastics.

The main goal of the Eco-block is to give affordable hallow block with high

durability and flexibility of the product.

Product Category and Style

Eco-Block is a type of a product which aims to serve and to satisfy the

customers through good quality of Hallow blocks.

Product Name

One of the factors that must be taken into consideration is the service name;

it gives a trademark and helps identify its services distinctively from others of the

same type usually prominently displayed on market. It makes a product catchier to

the eye of customers and are likely to attract because of its name. It should be

appealing to and outstanding to consumers.

Figure 2.1 – Business Logo

Eco-Block construction supply, Inc. is a company that offers a good quality

of Hallow Blocks in the area of Lipa City. Wherein, the proponents will bring the

satisfaction of the customer through the durability of the product.

Pricing

Pricing is the process whereby a business sets the price at which it will sell

its product and service and maybe part of the business marketing plan. There are

people who are price conscious that is why they must prefer to buy a product or

services with a low price but have a high quality. In terms of place the proponents

choose the plant location that is accessible to all and easy to locate. To be well

known the new product promotion will be a great help in introducing the product to

the target market.

22
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Place of Distribution

The place or location is a vital ingredient of the total marketing mix which

ensures the product availability to the right market, at the right quantity, at the right

condition, at the right cost, and at the right time.

The place should have wide space to accommodate the size of the service

trucks and for the production of the eco blocks in the area of San Celestino.
