4) Two tie bar plates of a bridge structure 250 mm wide and 20 mm thick are to be connected by a double strap butt joint. The
rivets and plate are made of steel. The permissible stresses in tension, shear and compression are 80,60 and 120 N/mm 2
respectively. Determine the diameter of rivet by using the following empirical relationship d =6 √ t where ‘t’ is the plate
thickness. Determine the number of rivets by equating the strength of the plate by strength of the rivets. Assume shear resistance
of one rivet in double shear is 1.875 times its resistance in single shear. Determine the efficiency of the joint assume m=1.5d, p t
= 2d, and t1 = 0.625t.
5) A centrifugal pump is driven by a 10 kw motor running at 1440 rpm. There is a reduction gear box between the motor and the
pump. The pump shaft rotates at 480 rpm. The design torque is 150% of the rated torque the motor and pump shafts are made of
plain carbon steel (σy =380 MPa) and FS is 4. Find the diameter of the shaft of motor and pump.

SET-3
1) Write the design procedure of a Split Muff coupling.
2) It is required to design a square key for fixing a gear on a shaft of 25 mm diameter. The shaft is transmitting 15 KW power at
720 rpm to the gear. The key is made of steel (σy = 460 MPa) and the factor of safety is 3. For key assume yield strength in
tension is equal to yield strength in compression. Determine the dimensions of the key.
3) In a bolted assembly of components initially the nut is tightened by means of a spanner so as to induce a pre load of 2.5 KN.
The external force P acting on the assembly is 5 KN. The bolt is made of plain carbon steel (σ y = 400 MPa) and FS is 2.5. The
effective stiffness of the parts held together by the bolts is 2.5 times the stiffness of the bolts. Find the size of the bolt.
4) With a neat sketch explain the design procedure of the Knuckle Joint.
5) What are bolts of Uniform Strength and Standard bolts explain with diagrams.
