Performance 2. Current marketing can be improved,
 Throughput- the amount of work performed over 3. Orders can be increased
some period of time; CONTROL( and Security)
 Response time- the average delay between a  Too little security or control
transaction or request and a response to that 1. Input data is not adequately edited
transaction or request; 2. Crimes (e.g. fraud, embezzlement) are (or can be)
Information ( and data) committed against data
 Output 3. Ethics are breached on data or information- refers to data
1. Lack of any information or information getting to unauthorized people
2. Lack of necessary information 4. Redundantly stored data is inconsistent in different files or
3. Lack of relevant information databases
4. Too much information/information overload 5. Data privacy regulations or guidelines are being (or can be)
5. Information that is not in a useful format violated
6. Information that is not accurate 6. Processing errors are occurring (either by people,
7. That is difficult to produce machines, or software).
8. That is not timely to its subsequent use 7. Decision-making errors are occurring
 Input  Too much control or security
1. Data is not captured 1. Bureaucratic red tape slows the system
2. Is not captured in time to be useful 2. Controls inconvenience customers or employees
3. Is not accurately captured- contains errors 3. Excessive controls cause processing delays.
4. Is difficult to capture EFFICIENCY
5. Is captured redundantly- same data captured  People, machines, or computers waste time
more than once 1.Data is redundantly input or copied
6. Too much data is captured 2.Data is redundantly Processed
7. Illegal data is captured 3.Information is redundantly generated
 Stored Data  People, machines, or computers waste materials and supplies
1. Data is stored redundantly in multiple files and  Effort required for tasks is excessive
/or database  Materials required for tasks is excessive
2. Stored data is not accurate SERVICE
3. Data is not secure from accident or vandalism  The system produces inaccurate results
,Data is not well organized  The system produces Inconsistent result

information needs from stored data  The system Is not easy to learn
5. Data is not accessible  The system Is To use
ECONOMICS  The system Is Awkward to use
 Cost  The system Is Inflexible to new or exceptional situations

source, Costs are too high  The system Is Incompatible with other systems
 Profits  The system Is Not coordinated with other systems.
1. New markets can be explored.
Description: The PICESE framework helps to systematically evaluate projects initiation worthiness. However, one
should note that in the checklist for problem identification, the categories of PIECES are not mutually exclusive; some
possible problems could show up in multiple lists. Furthermore, the list of possible problems is not exhaustive; hence
addition of identified definition of problems to the framework is possible. The framework is equally suited to
analyzing both manual and computerized applications. Moreover, from the identified categories one category might be
more worth considering than specific to a particular project. Hence, priority can be set at the beginning to associate
the desired weight among the identified categories of criteria or flexibility is also possible to limit the evaluation
criteria to specific categories only.
