SYNOPSIS

This movie is about Cassandra who is always being bullied by her college’s friends

Katie Sharp. Cassandra Evans the person who is not confident with herself and every day

she always compares her life with Katie Sharp. She always wants to be like her because she

thinks Katie Sharp can do everything by herself, she is very famous in social media, a

beautiful person and can be confident when in front of other people.

The story begins when at the colleague, Cassandra tried want to be talked with Katie

Sharp like other people, but she is accidently spilled her coffee in front of Katie Sharp. Then,

in the class Cassandra can correctly answer the question that was given by their lecturer but

Katie Sharp does not. So, Katie Sharp was dissatisfied and glanced at her because she does

not like other people to be more than her. Katie Sharp plans something with her friends to

bully Cassandra. They drop off the milk into Cassandra’s head when she enters the cafeteria.

At that time, Katie Sharp recorded a video, and she posted it on her social media.

The night after coming back from college, Cassandra feels frustrated with the video

that Katie Sharp posted in her social media and she feels so tired of being bullied. So,

Cassandra Evans prays to God to make Katie Sharp know what it is like when walk in the day

in her shoes. Tomorrow morning when they wake up, they feel like something happens and

feel weird with themself. Then they were so shocked because they switched bodies with one

another.

Then they decide to just live with other bodies and try to find a way to get back to

normal. Cassandra and Katie Sharp try to create their personality with the bodies that their

changes make other people not know about this. At night, when they have the youth group

like they will meet up and pray for each other at Cassandra’s house they decide to go there

together, then at that time Katie Sharp does not know what the things she wants to write in

the paper. So, Cassandra’s brother Clay Evans tried to talk with Katie Sharp in Cassandra’s

body then he talks to her about the past before their fathers death. Their fathers always said

5
to them to lead with love with one another. Clay gives some motivation to her fake sister and

that makes Katie Sharp realize that.

At the end of the movie, Cassandra plans to take revenge on Katie Sharp at the party

to make her realize how she feels when being bullied. When Cassandra goes back home, she

recorded the video to post on social media to make an apology to Katie Sharp. Finally, Katie

Sharp decides to participate again in the Julliard Audition for Cassandra and then Cassandra

wants to go to an interview Glam Slam for Katie Sharp with the help of Cassandra’s brother.

When on the day of the audition and interview they pray to God to make them easily handle

that situation but after that they get switched back to their normal bodies. Cassandra and Katie

Sharp become friends and Katie Sharp's parents realize that they need to think more about

their daughter to lead with love.

6
MESSAGES FROM THE MOVIE

The message that could be found in this movie is that we need to be grateful for all the

things we have in our life. We need to be glad about ourselves and no need to be someone

else or compare ourselves with other people. For example, showing the lack of gratitude is

when Cassandra told her mother that she wishes to be someone else who is popular that

everyone likes, someone who has millions of followers, beautiful, confident in front of others

and has everything. We do not know why she is not glad that she has a beautiful and happy

family who always supported her with everything she does in her life. Even Katie Sharp has

everything, but her parents do not give more of their love to her and did not allow her to make

her own decision. (3:46)

Secondly, I think the next message is forgiveness. Forgiveness does not mean

forgetting or excusing the harm done to you or making up with the person who caused the

harm. Forgiveness brings a kind of peace that helps you go on with life. Forgiveness can even

lead to feelings of understanding, empathy, and compassion for the one who hurt you. For

example, when Cassandra came home from the parties then she recorded the video to make

an apology for everything she had done to Katie Sharp and other people as soon as she

realized her offense. (1:16:32 - 1:17:50)

Thirdly, I think the next message is always to apologize to others. This is because

apologies make us feel better in our life and everything we do. For example, we can also get

to see when Cassandra said sorry to Abby because pushed her at the party and Katie also

made an apology to Lorena and Olivia when they were in college. Because of that, Abby,

Lorena, and Olivia accept the forgiveness from them, then they decide to be friends. So, from

that we can learn how the impact when making an apology first to others has a positive impact.

(1:20:58 - 1:23:52)

Besides that, the most important message in this movie is family love. True love is very

important in our family to get a happy family even if we just have a simple life. As a parent we

need to always think about our child more than other things because they need our love to live

7
a better life and to make them not feel lonely. From this movie, it is like Cassandra Evans even

she is not famous or have everything that Katie Sharp have it but she also happy because she

has the family who was really cared about each other’s and always give supported to her

neither same as Katie Sharp who is the person did not get much loved from her parents and

her parents just thinks about something else than to thinks about their daughter’s decision for

her life. (2:27- 3:22), (51:22- 52:22) and (1:00:49-1:01:37)

Next, another message is we must be brave to stand up for ourselves and have self-

respect especially when someone is trying to make you down in your life. For instance,

Cassandra’s brother asked her to stand up for herself because Cassandra did not do anything

when Katie Sharp and her friends spilled the milk on Cassandra. We must have courage to

stand up for ourselves because if we do not, people will take advantage of our weakness.

Bullying is one of the most common things in high school, so anyone must be taught to have

courage to stop this bullying from spreading and harming others. Having courage does not

mean you have to be mean, you just must speak to them and show them that you are not

afraid and stronger than them. (12:43 - 13:10)

Other than that, the message from this movie is we need to have self-confidence in

everything we do in our life because it can make us live a better life and can easily achieve

our dreams. For instance, Cassandra did not have the confidence to make a video to post on

her social media and she always performs behind the curtain. She also is not confident to

participate in Julliard Audition because of the past incidents that happened to her. We need

to gain our confidence level back when something happens to us because of the past

incidents. If we still think about the past, it will be hard for us to achieve our goals for our bright

future. (1:38- 2:45)

Finally, the message that I get from this movie is to be kind to other people even if we

know everything she has done to us then just let it go and think of the future for our life. Based

on this movie, Katie and her friends bullied Cassandra by spilling milk on her and recorded

the incident then she uploads the video and makes it as a joke. Abby tells Cassandra to not

8
let Katie get away with this and Abby said she really hates them all, but Cassandra said to

Abby that they cannot hate people. Because of that, Cassandra also got a lot of negative

comments, but she is pretending not to care even though Katie does not make an apology to

her because of the incidents that she makes. (10:56-11:53)

CONNECTION WITH INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Chapter 1- Foundations of Interpersonal Communication

Channel (1:10) and (1:16:55-1:17:50)

- The medium through which messages pass. It is a kind of bridge connecting source and

receiver. Communication rarely takes place over only one channel; two, three or four channels

are often used simultaneously.

- For example: Cassandra Evans and Katie Sharp used their social media to express their

feelings, thoughts and their daily life. And, when Abby wishes good luck to Cassandra Evans

for Julliard Audition through social media.

- For example: After arguing with Katie at the parties, Cassandra recorded the video to make

an apology to Katie Sharp for everything she has done to Katie Sharp.

Chapter 3- Perception of the Self and Others

Hidden self (0:1:26 - 0:02:01)

- The hidden self is the information about yourself that you know but the others do not know.

All information that you know of yourself, you choose to keep a secret.

- For example: Cassandra Evans hides her talent and singing behind a curtain because she

has social anxiety.

9
Social comparison (0:03:55 - 0:04:41)

- The social comparison is you develop your self-concept by comparing yourself with others.

- For example: Cassandra compares herself with Katie Sharp because she thinks Katie can

do everything, she is very famous, beautiful, and confident in front of other people, but she

cannot do everything like Katie Sharp. Her mother always gives support to her and always

tells Cassandra no need to be someone else and she needs to be confident with herself.

Chapter 4- Listening in Interpersonal Communication

Emphatic Listening (0:11:07- 0:12:00)

- Emphatic listening is to empathize with others is to feel with them, to see the world as they

see it, to feel what they feel. Empathic listening will also help you to enhance your

relationships.

- For example: Cassandra friend Abby's empathy for Cassandra as she is exposed to stale

milk in front of everyone because of Katie Sharp being so annoyed with her in the class.

Chapter 5- Verbal Messages

Message Can Confirm and Disconfirm – Rejection (1:10:15-1:10:23)

- The language behaviours known as confirmation and disconfirmation have to do with the

extent to which you acknowledge another person. In rejection, you disagree with the person;

you indicate your unwillingness to accept something the other person says or does.

- For example: Katie pushed away Abby and did not listen to her when she tried to stop them

from continuing arguing.

Meanings are Denotative and Connotative (0:03:55 – 0:04:41)

- Denotation of a word's objective definition. Connotation is its subjective or emotional

meaning. Snarl words and purr words may further clarify the distinction between denotative

and connotative meaning. Snarl words are highly negative such as (“She’s an idiot”), purr

words are highly positive (“She’s a real sweetheart”).

10
- For example: Cassandra uses the purr words to Katie Sharp, because she thinks Katie can

do everything on her own.

Message can Confirm and Disconfirm (0:23:40 – 0:23:57)

- Disconfirmation is a communication pattern in which you ignore a person’s presence as well

as that person’s communications. It leads to loss of self-esteem.

- For example: Cassandra in the body of Katie Sharp calls her best friend’s Abby but Abby

ignores her because Abby does not know that her best friend switched body with Katie Sharp.

Chapter 6- Nonverbal Message

Eye Communication- Eye Contact (0:09:48 - 0:09:57)

- Occulesis is the study of the message communicated by the eyes, which vary depending on

the duration, direction, and quality of the eye behaviour. Eye contact uses the eye to serve

several important functions.

- For example: In the classroom, when their lecturer asked a question to Katie Sharp, but she

was not focused on the classroom, and she cannot answer the questions that were given by

their lecturer. So, their lecturer asked Cassandra to answer the question then Cassandra’s

answer was correct. After that, Katie glanced at Cassandra because she felt dissatisfied with

her.

Touch Communication- Meanings of Touch (Ritual) (34:27-34-57) and (1:16:16 -

1:16:27)

- Tactile communication or haptics is the most primitive form of communication. The first sense

to be used. The meaning of touch, ritual is shaking hands to say goodbye or hello, kiss, hug

or put an arm around another’s shoulder.

-For example: Katie Sharp just arrived home from college with Cassandra’s brother, then

Cassandra’ mother came from her back to hug and kiss her because it’s her family lifestyle to

show their love for each other.

11
- For example: Cassandra’s mother hugs her daughter after the incident at the party between

Cassandra and Katie.

Spatial Messages and Territoriality- Secondary Territories (25:28-25:50)

- Secondary territories are areas that do not belong to you but that you have occupied; thus,

you are associated with them.

- For example: Cassandra and Katie need to change and sit at their assigned seats.

Body Gestures- Emblems (1:31:37-1:31:40)

- Emblems are substitutes for words, they are body movements that have rather specific verbal

translations.

- For example: Cassandra arrived at her house before Katie went to the Julliard audition and

both waved hands towards each other as their greeting.

Chapter 7- Conversational Messages-Principle of Dialogues (13:50-14:02)

-Dialogues a conversation in which there is a two-way interaction. For each person, they can

be a speaker and listener or sender and receiver. It is a type of conversation in which there is

a deep concern for the other person. The objective of dialogue is mutual understanding and

empathy.

-For example: When Cassandra prays to God to show Katie Sharp what it is like to walk a day

in her shoes. So, her prayers become true and the next day they are having switched bodies

with one another.

12
IMPACT FROM THIS MOVIE

(NUR FATIHAH)

I am so happy when I watched this movie because Katie Sharp has realized her

offense that she has done to all the people. Then Cassandra also shows us to always forgive

everyone even if they were very cruel to you and always make an apology to everything we

do even if it's just small matters and realize with our offense that we have done. So, from that

I realized and want to be like Cassandra who can easily forgive everything Katie Sharp has

done to her and Cassandra makes an apology as soon as she realizes everything she does

to Katie Sharp at the parties. Besides that, it has also made me realize about the important

things in your life to have a happy family or happy lifestyles is you need to lead with love in

your family and to always support each other. I am so happy that I have a happy family like

Cassandra because in my siblings even though we have already become older and separated

from each other it makes us closer and always thinks about other siblings when everything we

do in our life.

(HAWA NAZILA)

After I watch this movie, I think I would recommend this movie if me and my friends’

sleepover or bored. It is because this movie gives the motivation that we need to stand up for

ourselves and love ourselves. Therefore, the movie taught me how important our family

support is. I am thankful that my family gives me support for whatever I do in my life. Next, this

movie teaches me to be just the way you are even though we are living in judgemental society,

but we need to face it in our own way. I also learned that we need to appreciate what we have,

which is to be grateful and love your life. Lastly, this movie gives me the impression that we

need to be kind to each other, just like Cassandra Evans.

13
(NUR AKMALIAH)

The impact for me from this movie, I am so happy because it makes me realize that

we do not need to have a lot of friends, sometimes we just need only one friend who always

be there no matter what happens to us. For example, it is like Abby who is always with

Cassandra when everything happens to her and always supports her. Next, it makes me

realize that we do not need to be someone else, but we just need to stand up with our

personality or lifestyles to be a perfect person like them. Even though they have everything,

we do not know their real life. So, we need to be glad that we have a happy family who always

supports us with everything we have done in our life. It is like Cassandra who has a happy

family and always takes good care of each other. Not like Katie Sharp, even though she has

everything, her family did not care more for her and did not give her to make her own decision

in her life.

(NOR SALIHAH)

The impact for me from this great movie, I feel sad because some people who think

they are popular depending on their followers thought that it was okay to bully anyone. We will

never accept bullying in our society because bullying can cause someone into trauma, and it

can lead someone into other illnesses such as depression and anxiety. For example when

Katie Sharp and her friends tried to prank Cassandra Evans by spilling milk all over her and

posted it on social media. When everything happens makes me sad because everyone who

saw the incident did not even stand up for Cassandra but instead laughed at her and recorded

the video. It is not how society is supposed to be, people should have more concern about

bullying. It could happen to our own family or close friends. So, to prevent that from happening

again in our society, parents should have taught their children and not encouraged them to be

bullied. For example, Katie Sharp’s parents encouraged her daughter to do more videos of

their daughter bullying Cassandra because it has millions of views, and it will make her

daughter become more famous with a negative attitude.

14
(MAIZATUL NADHIRAH)

After I watch this movie, I felt mixed feelings between happy and sad because I felt the

situation in this movie is a reality that happens nowadays. Firstly, I feel sad because I think

Katie’s bad attitude was caused by lack of affection from her parents who let their daughter

do whatever including cyberbullying in her social media if it will get millions of views. So, I think

it is sad to see how her parents just let their daughter’s bad attitude harm other people because

they think it is okay if it will not harm her public image in social media. Next, I feel happy

because at the end of this movie we can see the two leading characters Cassandra Evans

and Katie Sharp be close friends even though Katie used to bully her before in school. After

that, they also learn a new thing from each other after they magically switch, like Katie teaches

Cassandra how to be confident and how to manage her social anxiety meanwhile Cassandra

teaches Katie how to be kind to others and always treat them with love and respect. So, I think

it is happy how Cassandra forgave Katie and be friends with her even though before this Katie

was mean to her and bullied her.

(NUR NADIYA SAFIYYA)

After I watch this movie, I feel like I want a life just like Cassandra has, except her

social anxiety. She had a wonderful family. Her mom and her brother, Clay, were very

supportive and loving towards her. They know exactly what she wants in her life, but they did

not force her to do so. They just support her non-stop and just follow through with her decision.

This can be seen when Cassandra said if she did not accept in Julliard, she will go to

community college where her brother is studying at. They are not forcing her to do better than

before because they know she is a very talented girl and will do it based on what she wants.

Next, the empathy of her mother and brother after she got bullied by Katie Sharp. They

convinced her not to feel down about it and said she should stand up for herself. Most parents

or family members nowadays did not care about their family members that much. They even

did not know if one of their family members got bullied because they did not pay attention to

them.

15
COMMENT AND SUGGESTIONS

From my point of view, Switched movies give us a lot of valuable messages for all the

people out there either younger or older, especially our parents. At the first time I watched this

movie I thought it just wanted to tell us about how both have switched their bodies with one

another but it is also about the true love of our family to get a happy family even if they just

have a simple life. It is like Cassandra Evans even she is not famous or have everything Katie

Sharp have it but she also happy because she has the family who was really care about each

other’s and always give supported to her neither same as Katie Sharp who is the person did

not get much loved from her parents and her parents just thinks about something else than to

thinks about their daughter’s decision for her life. Besides that, we can get to see that Katie

Sharp slowly realizes her offense when stay in Cassandra's body. She can feel how

Cassandra’s family treats her with full of love, but her parents do not do the things like that,

and she has learned a lot of positive attitudes when having switched bodies with Cassandra.

Next, I feel that this movie was not directed very well. Some scenes were a bit cringey

to watch. Especially during Cassandra and Katie's fight at the dinner party. I need to pause

when the fight scene begins because I cannot handle how cringey it is. Then I continued it

again after taking a deep breath. In other words, I can say they have bad acting skills. So, to

make the fight scene look more interesting, the actor needs to practice more facial expressions

and body language movements to make the scene look smooth. From my opinion, the acting

is quite off and there are some instances in the movie where specific things are inconsistent,

but it did not affect much on the movie. For example when Cassandra is standing in front of

the judges to play her guitar. The fact that Cassandra’s hands do not really move when she

plays guitar, but her lip sync is good, it is very clear that Cassandra is lip syncing when she

sings. After that, I also think this movie is about fantasy and real-life events.

At the part they are having switched bodies it is possible to happen in real life. It can't

happen but if we want something to improve our confidence or take revenge on her it can be

considered. For example, when Cassandra prays to god to make Katie Sharp walk in her

16
shoes and next day, they are having switched bodies, but it is weird. And the part of Katie

Sharp bullies other people especially Cassandra is the real-life events because nowadays, as

we know, bullying is such a normal thing and frequently happens among us, especially

teenagers. And finally, I want to know more about how cruel Katie Sharp is when bullies other

people especially Cassandra because in this movie they just show us a short part of that

before she is having switched bodies with Cassandra. So, I hope they can show us more about

how Katie Sharp bullies other people to make us know and understand more why Cassandra

tried to be bullied and really want to make her realize everything she has done.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Switched 2020 movie is a great movie because it is such a motivation

and awareness to students who are always bullied by other people. It is also good for parents

because it makes them more cared for and loves their children.

Secondly, this movie allows people to realize that we cannot judge people by their

looks or popularity because for us that does not make any sense because their insides are

the most important things. Maybe she is not pretty but we do not know how their insides look

so that is why we cannot judge the books by their cover. Nowadays, as we know, bullying is

such a normal thing and frequently happens among us, especially teenagers. Bullying is not

good for our society and may hurt people physically and emotionally. We should stop that

thinking because we do not know it can give a big side effect for the person we were bullying.

Other than that, Switched movies teach us to always love yourself and lead with love in your

family. It can make us more cared, loved and supported by everything we do in our life.

Finally, everyone has their own personalities, so we need to be confident with

everything we do in our life to make us look perfect like someone else. We cannot compare

ourselves with others because we do not know how their insides look and we cannot be others

because it is not the same. So, you need to be glad about your own life and try to improve to

be better like others.
