EPON Access
As shown in Figure 1-1, the EPON system consists of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in the
office, the Optical Network Unit (ONU) at the user side, and the Optical Distribution Network
(ODN). In the EPON system, data can be transmitted bidirectionally through a single fiber. The
ODN provides an optical channel between the OLT and ONU.

An S9300 switch equipped with EPON Line Processing Units (LPUs) can be used as the OLT
to implement the following functions:
l Managing ONU access
l Broadcasting Ethernet data to ONUs
l Initiating and controlling the distance measuring process and recording the distance
measuring information
l Allocating bandwidth to ONUs
Applicable Environment
After years of rapid development, broadband services have been expanded from Internet access
to value-added services such as video, interactive gaming, and VoIP. High bandwidth is required
for these services, especially the bandwidth-consuming broadband video services such as IPTV.
The optical access technology is developed to provide high bandwidth.
The xDSL technology will still be used in the future; therefore, fibers and copper cables will
coexist on the access layer of the metro Ethernet for a long time. Currently, the access mode
should be selected according to the actual situation and requirements of the network and services.
The traditional xDSL can be used to provide the broadband access service for common users.
In upscale communities or business buildings, the fiber to the home (FTTH) or fiber to the
building (FTTB) mode can be used to provide the Internet access service. In this way,
differentiated services can be provided to meet requirements of various users.
An S9300 switch with Ethernet LPUs and EPON LPUs installed can function as a routing switch
and an OLT at the same time. It supports both the traditional access mode and optical access
mode to meet the requirements of different users.
Pre-configuration Tasks
Before configuring the EPON access service, complete the following task:
l Ensuring normal communication between the S9300 and the upstream device
Data Preparation
To configure the EPON access service, you need the following data.
No. Data
3 Bandwidth of ONU
Context
Before adding an ONU, create a line profile. The line profile defines the line parameters of the
ONU.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
The switch provides a default line profile default0. If no line profile is configured, you can use
the default line profile when adding an ONU.
The line profile simplifies configuration of the line parameters. To add an ONU, you only need
to bind the ONU to a line profile, and then the switch delivers the line parameters in the profile
to the EPON LPU.
Step 3 (Optional) Run:
dba-profile dba-profile-name
----End
Context
The OLT dynamically allocates bandwidth to uplink interfaces of ONUs according to the
parameters in the DBA profile. By configuring a DBA profile, you can set the bandwidth
allocation mode and bandwidth parameters uniformly. ONUs with the same bandwidth
allocation requirement can be bound to the same DBA profile to simplify the configuration.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
To manage an ONU in Operation, Administration, and Management (OAM) mode, create a
service profile before adding the ONU to the switch.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
ONUs are managed in OAM or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) mode. In SNMP
mode, the S9300 delivers management information to the network management system (NMS)
using an SNMP profile.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
In the extended OAM discovery stage of the ONU discovery process, the OLT must determine
the organization that each ONU belongs to. The organization is identified by the organizationally
unique identifier (OUI).
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
Users can go online only after ONUs are added to the OLT (S9300). You can add ONUs manually
or configure the OLT to automatically discover ONUs.
Procedure
l Adding an ONU manually
1. Run:
system-view
By default, the system provides a default line profile default0 and a default service
profile default0. You can modify the parameters of the two default profiles but cannot
delete the default profiles.
The ONUs that are discovered automatically are added to the system.
Executing the onu confirm command succeeds only when there are automatically-
discovered ONUs on the EPON interface.
When using the automatic ONU discovery function, you do not need to enter the MAC
address or password of each ONU, avoiding incorrect MAC address or password.
----End
Context
Records of the discovered ONUs are saved in the buffer. The system clears the records from the
buffer after the ONU aging time expires.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
After an ONU is added to the switch, you can modify the parameters of the ONU.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
CAUTION
Modifying the configuration of an ONU makes the ONU offline. After the configuration is
modified, the ONU goes online again.
----End
Context
To suspend services of an authorized user, deactivate the ONU of the user.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
Information about discovered ONUs is saved in the buffer. To save the space in the buffer, clear
information about the ONUs that do not need to be added to the switch.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
Information about a specified ONU or all discovered ONUs is cleared from the buffer.
The auto-discovery table contains records about the discovered ONUs and the onu cancel
command takes effect only after the auto-discovery function is enabled.
----End
Context
The ONU that uses password authentication and once-on online mode cannot go online again
after going offline. The ONU can go online again only through the rediscovery function.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
Step 2 Run:
interface epon interface-number
Step 3 Run:
onu re-discovery { onu-id onu-id | all }
The rediscovery function is applicable only to the ONUs that uses password authentication and
once-on online mode.
----End
Context
To diagnose the S9300, you can re-register ONUs to locate faults.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
Step 2 Run:
interface epon interface-number
Step 3 Run:
onu re-register { onu-id onu-id | all }
CAUTION
After you run this command, online ONUs are forced to go offline.
----End
Context
To diagnose an ONU, enable the loopback function for the ONU.
CAUTION
After the loopback function is enabled for an ONU, services on the ONU are interrupted.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
Perform the following steps to restart a remote ONU.
CAUTION
After you run this command, the specified ONU is forced offline and services are interrupted.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
To manage an ONU in SNMP mode, assign an IP address to the ONU.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
Step 2 Run:
interface epon interface-number
Step 3 Run:
onu onu-id1 [ - onu-id2 ]
Step 4 Run:
onu-ipconfig ip-address ip-address mask { mask | mask-length }gateway gateway-
address manage-vlan vlan-id
You can assign an IP address to an ONU only after setting the management mode of the ONU
to SNMP.
----End
Context
The distance between an ONU connected to an EPON interface and the OLT in the central office
varies. By setting the search distance of an EPON interface, you can specify the distance within
which the ONUs can be discovered and go online.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
Step 2 Run:
interface epon interface-number
----End
Context
ONUs are deployed dispersedly. Therefore, great workload is required when the ONUs need to
be uploaded. The firmware software of the S9300 can upgrade ONUs remotely to reduce the
workload.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
Perform the following steps on the switch to limit the number of MAC addresses supported by
an ONU.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
The maximum number of user MAC addresses supported by the ONU is set.
By default, the function of MAC address restriction is disabled.
----End
Context
Perform the following steps on the switch to disable MAC address learning on an EPON
interface.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
----End
Context
The S9300 can dynamically learn MAC addresses based on ONU IDs. If the learned MAC
addresses are not required, clear them manually.
Procedure

Applicable Environment
In most cases, ONUs are located far away from the telecommunications room and deployed
across the network, which makes service configuration difficult. To solve this problem, manage
ONUs remotely through the switch (OLT). You can use a service profile to deliver service
parameters to the ONUs and do not need to configure the services on site. This reduces the
workload and expense of service configuration.
NOTE
The configuration tasks of terminal management services are optional. You can perform the required tasks
according to requirements of your network.
Pre-configuration Tasks
Before configuring the terminal management service, complete the following tasks:
l Ensuring normal communication between the S9300 and the upstream device
l Adding ONUs to the S9300
Data Preparation

Applicable Environment
The EPON interface of the S9300 supports the following VLAN services:
l VLAN tag: The EPON interface adds VLAN tags to untagged packet sent upstream to
identify packets sent from different ONUs.
l VLAN mapping: In a tagged packet sent from an ONU, the tag identifies the service type
or location of the user. This type of packet cannot be transmitted on the public network.
Therefore, the VLAN tag of the packet sent from the ONU is mapped to a public VLAN
tag.
l VLAN stacking: The EPON interface can add a VLAN tag to a tagged packet sent from
the ONU so that the customer VLAN ID is transparently transmitted on the ISP network.
You can configure different VLAN services based on the actual situation and requirement of
your network.
NOTE
The configuration tasks of VLAN services are optional and can be performed at a random sequence.
Pre-configuration Tasks
Before configuring the EPON VLAN service, complete the following tasks:
l Ensuring normal communication between the S9300 and the upstream device
l Adding ONUs to the S9300
Data Preparation
To configure the EPON VLAN service, you need the following data.
NOTE
The following data is optional and is prepared as required.
No. Data
1 Default VLAN ID
No. Data
2 Inner VLAN ID and outer VLAN ID of packets and mapped inner VLAN ID and
outer VLAN ID for VLAN mapping
Context
Perform the following steps on the switch to specify the default VLAN for an ONU.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
Step 2 Run:
interface epon interface-number
Step 3 Run:
onu onu-id1 [ - onu-id2 ]
You can enter the ONU view only when the specified ONU has been added to the switch.
Step 4 Run:
port default-vlan vlan-id [ batch-start ]
After the default VLAN ID is specified for an ONU, the switch adds the default VLAN tag to
the untagged packets sent from this ONU. Then the switch identifies different users according
to the VLAN tags in their packets.

[ remark-8021p 8021p | copy-8021p ]
Step 5 Run:
quit
Step 6 Run:
port hybrid tagged vlan vlan-id3
The EPON interface must be added to the translated outer VLAN so that packets of this VLAN
can pass the EPON interface as tagged packets. Otherwise, the VLAN mapping service does not
take effect.
----End
Context
When two private networks in different VLANs communicate with each other through a public
network, the user packets may contain one or two VLAN tags when reaching the public network.
Configure double-tag VLAN mapping on the edge device of the public network so that the
VLANs of private networks and the public network can be separated. This saves VLAN
resources of the public network. Compared with single-tag VLAN mapping, double-tag VLAN
mapping is more flexible and used in a wider scope.
