There are a number of useful books containing design guidance including design aids
available from organisations such as BCSA, SCI, Concrete Society, TRADA and BDA.
The list below is indicative and is by no means complete or exhaustive.

Specific references are:

• “Structures” by Daniel L. Schodek. ISBN 0-13-027821-1 – Chapter 15 includes


some rule-of-thumb information for determining approximate size of elements.
• “The way we build now” by Andrew Orton ISBN 0-419-15780-8 – Chapter 2 and
the Care Studies.
• “Concrete Buildings Scheme Design Manual” Owen Brooker, the Concrete
Centre, ISBN 1-904818-44-7: (specifically been written for the examination
candidates using concrete in their answers).
• “Economic Concrete Frame Elements” C.H. Goodchild, ISBN 0-7210-1488-7
with a more detailed approach for concrete slabs and beams.
• “The Red Book – The Handbook of Structural Steelwork” from BCSA; gives
practical design advice, worked examples, section properties and member
capacities.
• “The Purple Book” – Steel Bridges” from BCSA: a practical approach to the
design of steel bridges for efficient fabrication and construction.
• “The Silver Book – Steel Buildings” from BCSA: covering steel design, section
property tables, industrial and multi-storey buildings, cladding and decking –
through to fire, transport and erection, contracts and case studies.
