with Dynamo Player
Enrique Galicia Tovar
Concepto Integral S.A. de C.V.
Consultant & Developer

Learning Objectives
 Learn how to model MEP elements by level of detail to be coordinating workflows
on each phase
 Learn how to create a clear solution path for Clash Coordination while developing
the project
 Learn how to set proper review and evaluation methods for the project to be
developed
 Learn about engineering functionality of a model after clash coordination

Description
Clash coordination can be quite exhausting while implementing a BIM (Building Information
Modeling) workflow in an established CAD environment where the BIM application only appears
prior to construction and none of its benefits are used in the project development.
In this class, we’ll learn about coordination methods that can improve the understanding of
scopes, workflows, and clash coordination while the project is developing, and how BIM benefits
would make a greater impact on the project.
We’ll integrate Navisworks Clash Detection methods with Dynamo for clash coordination in early
phases by a hierarchical breakdown, and use again the Dynamo Player to remodel or
accelerate the clash coordination.
Finally, we’ll use Dynamo Player to review engineering functionality for pipes, ducts, and conduit
elements so that information is accurate using some custom-made scripts. We’ll review some
samples used in some projects, and discover how to extract CAD lines to create Revit MEP
elements.

Introduction
Clash Detection is perhaps the easiest to understand of all BIM processes and outcomes, its
nature rely on the fact that BIM models can interact on a common space before construction
and furthermore can help us to prevent clearly any disaster that otherwise would be solved on
site.

Unfortunately, its not a simple thing to do, its most complicated requirement is and will always
be the human factor involved, either is because model maturity, project hierarchy priorities,
team modeling requirements, BEP practices and many other factors involved.

On its counterpart programming skills, and playground tools such as dynamo have brought
different rules to the game and by that a lot of things can change and open up for accelerated
clash coordination.

The CAD Empire and the Clash Detection Paradox

Talking about MEP, Clash Detection where first set because of a design process from
transforming MEP CAD 2d Plans into a Revit Model as fast as possible with out considering the
other installations, ignoring heights, setting no rules because on 2d symbolical plans didn’t
require such delicacies, and when everything went together on a BIM Model, Clashes arise, on
such a devouring behavior that initial numbers are always around 4,000 to 8,000 on a 1,000 mts
project with no evident reason other than the misinterpretation of plans and its understanding of
construction behaviors to improve them.

Impossible to think on a coordination session with all involved to review such high numbers,
when initially there weren’t any other inquiries on the design phase, so then a lot of rework and
reanalysis where required on the modeling part and then the cycle went on an on, until it gets to
such modifications that the project where not longer the same that was proposed and then
redesign was require.

Second alternative was to do Selective Clash Analysis in which the tolerance where bigger and
the most elements where colliding and with that, coordination meetings got into the solution to
set priorities on modeling to solve those clashes.

Until a better way of dealing with clashes arise, fixing around the dilemma that create them on
the first place what if instead of creating a BIM model from CAD plans we work on the
progressive model development by level of detail so that the design integrates installation
requirements.

And with that Model Coordination substitute Clash Detection on some projects, on those where
the number of participants involved where able to integrate to a single BEP , there time
schedules where possible and the project requirements lead them enough time, for the rest of
projects there’s still a lot of areas to modify Clash Detection or Model Coordination Practices
and on this hand out in coordination to the presentation we will review alternatives to accelerate
responses and results.

Page 3
Coordinated Workflows
BEP (BIM Execution Plan) it’s a must to any type of project, its your basic start point , and its
nature its not about contract requirements or obligations, its rather a guide related to
participants to collaborate for the project.

Best Recommends its to use LOD Planner because it’s a online service for creating BEP that
can use the company way of Work (WOK) to adapt to its participants, and it uses a segregated
LOD visibility for each date required, as well as video content and other tools.
Check it out
https://www.lodplanner.com/

On a Coordinated work flows practices would require to set the LOD of elements to be used on
each phase an its reason to be there, a BEP needs to be a coordinated way of work not an
imposed one, that’s the main issue most of the times, when requirements are set and not
discussed, with out considering the involved ones.

Coordinated Practices Team Work

Coordinated practices of team work include changing the mind set of team work from an
individual split of tasks to an integrated solution working around, number of coordination teories
had arrived since communication its BIM main issue

Best Practices for Team Work are.

 Accept proposals.
 Have a good listening on your colleagues perspective and proposal.
 Complement rather than correct.
 Built upon the others solutions.
 Have a Clear long term result.
 Question the complete process and its nature to improve them.

Conventional Clash Detection

Assumptions
Let’s assume you have a BEP and its requirements are using a CAD to BIM Model process, and
Navisworks as an analysis tool for creating the Clash Detections on a requirement of 0.3 mm.
Navisworks its commonly used as BIM Platform software for its capabilities of visualization,
clash detection, quantity takeoffs and time liner simulation.

Best Practices for this process would be best if you considered.

 Export elements aligned by the same coordinate system precision on 0.01mm at least.
 Export them from a view in which visibility of finished elements its clear and avoid work
in progress.
 Export IDs of Elements so that any tracing back can be enable.

Page 4
 Stablish a Clash Detection Order of Disciplines.
 Use this workflow.

Once that workflow is finish, solving the clashes needs to have a tracing back by ID or using the
switchback of Navisworks that can be time consuming, so for reducing that we can use some
dynamo scripts to enhace the solution and integrate to other workflows.

Dynamo Clash Detection

Dynamo its Revit set of tools playground to increment possibilities of fast modeling, imposible
modeling analysis, quality, documentation, project management, and files transformation.
With out any doubt one of Revit best leverage tools to adapt and change possibilities on BIM
processes and requirements.

Our first approach to use it its quite simple would be related to extract Navisworks Points and
read them as a file to insert spheres on Revit to count Clashes their locations and the
responsible to solve them.

Clash Managment with Dynamo

The workflows goes as follow.

Dynamo Output Documents

Going deeper with dynamo functions we can increase the analysis and review of results by
creating outputs, such as sheets, views, schedules, and export those as excel sheets that can
distribute the information to all participants.

We will use the spheres to create output sheets and views that can be review and analyzed
further on.

The workflow goes as follows.

Dynamo for Clash Resolution

Modifing MEP can be quite time consuming because the measurements we are trying to move
elements are refered to be decimals o centecimals, on sides or can also be place as offsets
difficult to review on Revit models, with out considering the fact that long elements can create a
continuum cause an effect on other spots, modifying a clash can make other clashes to appear.

So we need to respond from general to specific clashes and need to use hierarchical
approaches, as required by the project.

Dynamo Quality Control

Since we are approaching to Dynamo as a basic tool for solving Clash Coordination problems,
perhaps some information may get lost or would require to be review in order to maintain
requirements form the BEP or for further information datasets.

Common sample would be how to code for transferring file parameter installation or reviewing
elements are on the corresponding level that they where supposed to be modeled.

Dynamo Player for Modeling

But to really accelerate Clash Detection or Model Coordination perhaps the most efficient way
would be to increase speed on proposals by modeling with dynamo or shortening the gap of
modeling from CAD by extracting information and use them on a secuenciated workflow.

Different to Structure and Architecture, MEP has the complete potential of routing elements to
generate solutions, and create a dynamo player modeling capability of circumstances.

And finally the most effective way to increase speed would be if information workflows integrate
other best practices to create model elements and further can solve the missing points on the
solutions planned.
