Abolition of Executive Presidency

 Sri Lankan Parliament debated abolition of Executive
Presidency as the tug of war between President
Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil
Wickremesinghe continued.
 The United National Party (UNP) led by
Wickremsinghe told Parliament that they will support
moves to slash the powers of the President.
 The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Sri Lanka
Muslim Congress (SLMC) also said that they will
support the 20th amendment to the constitution.
 The amendment was introduced in parliament a few
months back but it had not mustered support from
UNP and other parties but with changed
circumstances, the UNP has decided to support it.

‘Strategy for New India @75’

 NITI Aayog released ‘Strategy for New India
@75’, its comprehensive national Strategy for
New India which defines clear objectives for
2022-23.
 The Strategy was released by the Union
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
 It is a detailed account across 41 crucial areas
that recognises the progress already made,
identifies binding constraints, and suggests the
way forward for achieving the objectives.
 The forty-one chapters in the document have
been merged under four sections - Drivers,
Infrastructure, Inclusion and Governance.

Training rural youth under DDU-GKY

 Union Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maruti
Suzuki India Ltd for training rural youth for skill
development under the flagship Deen Dayal
Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY)
 The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya
Yojana (DDU-GKY) is the flagship placement linked
skill-training scheme of the Ministry of Rural
Development.
 Considering the challenges faced by India’s rural
youth in getting employment such as the lack of
formal education and employability skills, the
Ministry decided to partner with Maruti Suzuki India,
the leading industry from the automotive sector,
under the DDU-GKY.

 Grameen Kaushalya Yojana or DDU-GKY is a
Government of India youth employment
scheme.
 It was launched on 25 September 2014 by Union
Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Venkaiah Naidu on
the occasion of 98th birth anniversary of Pandit
Deen dayal Upadhyaya.

2018 UN Human Rights Prize

 Asma Jahangir passed away due to cardiac
arrest.
 She was known for her outspoken nature and
unrelenting pursuit for human rights.
 This year, the award coincided with the 70th
anniversary of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.
 With this win, Asma Jahangir became the
fourth Pakistani woman to be awarded with
the UN Human Rights Prize.
 Earlier winners were Begum Ra'Ana Liaquat
Ali Khan (1978), Benazir Bhutto (2008) and
Malala Yousufzai (2013).

Anup Kumar announces retirement

 Anup Kumar, legendary Indian Kabaddi player
and former World Cup-winning captain,
announced his retirement from the sport with
immediate effect, bringing an end to his 15-year-
long career.
 Kumar, known to be one of the most efficient
players, has led his team to victory on several
occasions and contributed to the overall growth
of the sport in the nation.
 He was appointed as captain of Indian National
team in 2014 and it was during his tenure that
the team won 2 gold medals at Asian Games in
2014 and the Kabaddi World Cup in 2016.

Chairman of CBIC with effect from
January 2019.
 He will succeed Chairman S Ramesh,
who retires on December 31, 2018.

policy-making body under the Finance
