Product Planning Worksheet

If you want to create a new product, use this worksheet to make sure you don’t miss any of the
necessary steps for success. (*See instructions for adding worksheet rows at the end)

1. Who is your target market?

2. What do they think their problem is?

3. Briefly, how will your product solve their problem?

4. Summarize the modules or points you’ll make in the product. If it’s a course, list the modules. If
it’s a book, list the chapters.

5. What price are you thinking of selling the product for? Why did you choose that price?

6. Research the need for the course (is there really a problem that people think they need to
solve?), how people in your target market perceive their problem (what words they use), and
what people think they need to know about the problem.
• Google Trends
• Google Keyword Planner
• Ask in Facebook and LinkedIn groups, maybe Reddit
• Search hashtags on Twitter
• Do a survey

Write out the question you’ll ask and the search terms you’ll use

7. What was the result of your research? (Don’t continue if you didn’t get positive results!) – list
components people want, terms they used and some quotes from them about their need. If
necessary, go back and adjust the modules/chapters above.

8. Brainstorm some names for the product, because the name is important for attracting buyers.
The name should make it clear what the product is and also include its benefit. (You can ask
some colleagues for feedback on your names.)

9. How will you promote the product? Consider JV partners, your email list, doing a webinar, social
media posts, and ads.

use

a combination?

14. When do you want to launch the product?

15. Create a timeline to complete the product (if you’ll be presenting the product over time, you
don’t have to complete it all in advance) - put it on your calendar. Outsource what you can.

16. Create a timeline for promoting the product – put it on your calendar. Outsource what you can.
