GROUP CASE STUDY

1. What would you do if you found yourself in a situation similar to that

faced by Suzette in this case?

If I will be in the position of Suzette, I will not conclude based on the

rumor nor likewise ignore it. As an employee, I have engaged a responsibility
in the organization that I belong, catering with it the commitment of being an
agent of its products and service. Regardless of the weakness of the
information provided, I should still consider little acts of help since I will be
affected in the situation. In the broad view, we are all accounted for the
products of the company. Therefore, I will observe the situation directly,
without limiting myself with the idea of Alex and Matt, being the suspects,
only. To come up with a reasonable evidence and source my opinion into a
justifiable event, I will gather and connect relevant evidence like CCTV
footage, seeking the opinion and observation of my colleagues and double
the security control provided on my work, as inventory clerk.

2. Do you believe that it was appropriate for Suzette to report the

alleged theft to a store manager? Would it have been unethical for
Suzette not to report the rumoured theft ring?

So far that the rumor is eventually making sense, to the extent that
there’s already a rational doubt to support it, I believe that it is appropriate
for Suzette to report the theft ring to the manager. For the situation to be
effectively investigated, there’s a need for proper monitoring, just as how the
organization provides a private investigator. Going further, I believe that it is
not unethical for Suzette not to report the rumored theft ring. The
information was weak, that’s why a dilemma could exist, either case, a
further monitoring would be the solution, arriving therewith the truth.

3. Accounting majors are preparing to enter a profession recognized as

having one of the strongest and most rigorously enforced ethical
code. Given this fact do you believe that accounting majors have
greater responsibility than other business majors to behave
ethically?
Yes, however, ethical behavior applies to anyone, and it should be
equally observed by all professionals. I believe that profession should not
supervise the character of a person. So, these moral standards should not be
favored with regards to the complexity of our duties. Ethical standards are
established on our principles, as individuals, and not focused or based merely
on the profession we are exercising. Though accountants are expected to
keep a lot of confidential information and millions of assets, it should not be
a foundation of creating the criteria of who should become more truthful,
ethical, and moral among all the professions. After all, accountants are not
only the safekeepers or evaluators of assets of a company.

4. Briefly discuss internal control activities that might have prevented

the theft losses suffered by Bertolini’s.

The control activities that might have been prevented the theft at
Bertolini’s are inventory checking, use of inventory sheet and increasing
security. As for the inventory checking, the company must conduct a physical
inventory count at least once a month. The use of inventory sheet by the
inventory clerk is done by preparing a monthly list which consists of the
inventory count based on his/her records. To increase the security the
company may consider installing CCTV cameras to the blind spot areas inside
and outside the store.
