SUBJECT: 700 Series Turbine Shaft, Forward Clutch Assembly and High Clutch Assembly
EQUIPMENT AFFECTED: HT/CLBT/V 700 Series Transmissions

This Service Information Letter Rev. “B” is to advise of a change in servicing the HT and CLBT 700 Series forward clutch
housing. Housings produced approximately 1998 to 2002 were chamfered on the spline leading edge as shown in Figure
1. This chamfer will allow the turbine shaft to be located deeper in the forward clutch housing which also changes the
position of the lockup sealrings. This condition may cause leakage at the sealrings lowering the lockup clutch pressure.
Figure 1 illustrates the proper press dimension to locate the turbine shaft in the housing.
This SIL also describes an acceptable rework procedure to salvage the rotating sealring bore area in both forward and high
range clutch assemblies.
Using a ten ton hydraulic press, assemble the turbine shaft into the forward clutch housing as shown in Figure 1, 2, or 3.
Ensure that the shaft is pressed squarely into the housing assembly. Experience has shown that to reliably achieve a good
square assembly, a fixture should be fabricated to locate the forward clutch housing assembly centerline square and true
with the centerline of the ram. A fixture to locate the centerline of the front or rear end of the turbine shaft relative to the
centerline of the ram is also required. Representative fixturing is shown in Figure 4. Check the runout on features specified
in Figure 1, 2, or 3 to ensure squareness. Also ensure that a good, tight spline joint is present by verifying that there is no
shaft movement with 2000 pounds force in the direction shown.
In the event the rotating sealring bore is damaged, the forward clutch housing assembly and high range clutch housing
assembly can be salvaged by sleeving the bore as illustrated in Figure 5. Bore out the housing assembly as shown in
Figure 6. Fabricate a sleeve as shown in Figure 7 and press into bored out housing assembly. Finish machine to
dimensions shown in Figure 5.
