Quadratic Equations and Inequalities
in One Variable
المعادالت و المتباينات التربيعية بمتغير واحد
ax2 + bx + c = 0
Solution:
(a) x 2 2 x 8 0
x 2 2 x 8 ( x 4)( x 2)
The quadratic equation x 2 2 x 8 0 becomes:
( x 4)( x 2) 0
Either ( x 4) 0 x 4
or ( x 2) 0 x 2
So the roots of x 2 2 x 8 0 are x 4 and 2
(b) 3x 2 11x 4 0
b b 2 4ac
x
2a
Solution:
Comparing x 2 2 x 8 0 with ax 2 bx c 0 gives:
a = 1, b = 2 and c = ‒ 8.
b b 2 4ac
Substituting these values into the quadratic formula x gives:
2a
2 2 2 4(1)(8)
x

4 8
Therefore x 2 or 4 (as in example 1(a)).
2 2
Solution:
Comparing 4 x 2 7 x 2 0 with ax bx c 0 gives:
2
a = 4, b = 7 and c = 2.
b b 2 4ac
Substituting these values into the quadratic formula x gives:
2a
7 7 2 4(4)(2)
x
2(4)
7 49 32 7 17
x
8 8
x 7 17 0.360 or 7 17 1.390
8 8
Solution:
a 2.68 , b 10.3 and c 4.2 .
Substituting the values of a, b and c into the quadratic formula
b b 2 4ac
x gives:
2a
Thus, the roots of 2.68x2 10.3x 4.2 0 are x 4.215 and x 0.372

Solution
x2 – 8x 12 ≤ 0
Find the roots of: x2 – 8x 12 = 0
(x − 2)(x – 6) = 0
Either (x − 2) = 0 x = 2,
or (x – 6) = 0 x = 6
Plot 2 and 6 on a number line and test points to determine the intervals that satisfy the
inequality.

From the previous graph, it is clear that the portion of the number line between 2
and 6 is the solution.
The critical values 2 and 6 are included in the solution since the inequality is of
the ≤ type and for this reason solid lines and closed circles were drawn at these
values of the number line.
Thus, the solution can be expressed in interval form as [2 , 6].
Alternatively, using number line representation, the solution is as shown below.
2 6
Solution
2x2 5x 3 > 0
Solve: 2x2 5x 3 = 0
1 (2x2 − 5x − 3) = 0
1 (2x 1)(x – 3) = 0
Either (2x 1) = 0 x = 0.5,
or (x – 3) = 0 x = 3
1 (2x 1)
(x – 3)
0.5 3
(2x 1)(x – 3)

ال تحقق تحقق ال تحقق
The previous figure indicates that the solution is the interval (0.5, 3).
The solution can also be represented on a number line and as shown below:
