Peeking through the window her surprise turned to horror. The atmosphere in the submarine
quickly changed. Everyone was frantic and screaming and thought they were on the verge of death.
Amidst all the drama, Samantha was able to calm down and properly analyze the situation. She realized
what was happening and she set out to fix the problem. She was about to risk her life for the safety of
others.

Samantha Lewis, who is better known as Sam and Mrs. Lewis is a high school biology teacher with a
passion for the ocean and the creatures within it. She lives in Mayberry, England with her husband
Michael, and their two beautiful kids, Emily who is eleven and Jake who is nine. Ever since Samantha
was a little girl she had a deep passion for the ocean and aspired to be a marine biologist. However, due
to her parent’s financial abilities she was unable to afford university which cut her aspiration of
becoming a marine biologist short. Samantha was hurt by the fact that she couldn’t have her dream job
but it didn’t detour her from doing more and more research about the ocean.

As a teacher Samantha, used her avenue to try and educate her students about the ocean. She
tried teaching her students about the ocean on various occasions, hoping to spark interest in her
students. This didn’t work and most students got annoyed when she spoke about the ocean. However,
there was one kid, Timothy, that enjoyed when his teacher spoke about the ocean. Timothy was a very
quiet kid, nobody really knew much about him. Unknown to everyone, Timothy, was an ocean-fanatic
that slept with shark pillows and brushed his teeth with whale toothpaste. He never felt comfortable
telling people about himself because he knew they would think he was weird. But, as time progressed in
school he started opening up to Mrs. Lewis about his love for the ocean and they developed a great
relationship. Almost every evening after school they would stay back in class and just talk about the
ocean and they even watched documentaries from time to time. Mrs. Lewis really helped Timothy to
come out of his shell and express himself.

Sam’s birthday was coming up and Michael wanted to do something special for his wife. While
scrolling through their phone the kids saw an ad about submarines that brought you up close and
personal with whale sharks and they showed their dad. As soon as Michael saw the ad he knew that he
had to bless her with a ride in one of those submarines. Sam has been obsessed with whale sharks since
2016 when she saw one in person. Their family took a trip to America in 2016, and they visited the
Georgia Aquarium and Sam fell in love whale sharks. Georgia Aquarium is one of three aquariums in the
world to have whale sharks in captivity. After seeing the share size and beauty of the magnificent
creature she fell in love. For years she was longing to see another whale shark so Michael knew that gift
was the right one for her. Despite what Michael was doing, he knew he wasn’t going with her because
he had a major phobia of the deep. Knowing the relationship between Sam and Timothy for their love of
ocean, Michael decided to buy a ticket for Timothy so he could accompany her.
 Michael wanted the gift to be a surprise and they really tried to keep it a secret but Sam still found
out in the end. Michael wanted it to be a surprise to Timothy too but he had to speak to his mom to
ensure that she was okay with her son going a submarine. She agreed and they decided the date and the
plan was to not tell any of them about the surprise. She tried her best to keep it a secret unfortunately
Timothy found out but in the most unconventional way possible. There was an instance where Timothy
was being very rude so she said,” For your rudeness you won’t be going with Mrs. Lewis on the
submarine.” Timothy was quite shocked because he knew nothing about going on a submarine.
However he became very intrigued and kept begging his mom to tell him more about the submarine
trip. She eventually got annoyed of him begging and explained the whole situation to him. She begged
him not to tell anyone because they wanted it to be a surprise to Mrs. Lewis and he vowed to keep his
mouth shut.

It was a month until Sam’s birthday and everything seemed to be on plan and Sam was going to
have a great birthday. But as usual somebody had to mess up the plan. Two days before the tip Timothy
was talking to Sam and in all the excitement talking about sea creatures it slipped out. He said,” Mrs.
Lewis, I can’t believe we’re actually going on a submarine together and see whale sharks.” He then said,
“Miss I’m so sorry, I wasn’t supposed to speak about it” and covered his mouth and ran away, he knew
then and there that he messed up big time. Sam didn’t know what he was talking about but being the
intuitive person she was, Sam started doing research about submarine rides near her and lo and behold
she saw the ad on whale shark adventures and she knew that had to be what Timothy was speaking
about. She saw that there was a ride right before her birthday and thought that they were planning that
for her birthday. She went home and started questioning everyone but they did surprisingly well, they
didn’t give her any hints that they were planning the submarine trip. When Michael hit her with “Babe,
what submarine are you speaking about? You already know that we’re going to dinner for your
birthday.” She was so confused and became really sad because she really wanted the submarine ride to
be her gift. She started moping around the house and was in a bad mood. Michael couldn’t stand to see
his wife in this state so he finally told her about the trip and she bounced right back and was so excited
to see the whale sharks.

The day of the trip arose and Sam was so excited to see some whale sharks again. She thought
that she would’ve been going alone but thankfully Timothy’s mom allowed him to go and he met her on
the dock. The water was so beautiful, it was crystal clear. They quickly went aboard the sub and started
descending. While descending they saw so many creatures in the water and surprisingly to everyone on
the sub Sam and Timothy were able to name most of the creatures they saw. They finally reached the
area with the whale sharks at approximately 150 feet below the surface. Everyone in the submarine’s
hull was astonished by the beauty of those majestic creatures. Sam was practically speechless while
peeking through the window, she was simply in awe at those majestic specimens. Unknown to all of
them though, they were about to experience something that few can attest that they experienced.
 Sam was so surprised to see so much whale sharks gathered together, she could hardly stop
looking through the window. They were watching the whale sharks for about 10 minutes when an odd
passenger did the unthinkable. He used flash to take a picture which startled the whale sharks. Before
going into the sub the passengers were given the ground rules and using flash was the #1 thing not to
do. His phone was quickly taken from him but it was too late. While Sam was peeking through the
window she was surprised to see a whale shark coming straight towards them but her surprise quickly
turned to horror when she realized how fast it was coming towards the sub. The whale shark came
charging at the submarine and ‘boom’ it hit the sub and it 3 more times. The emergency lights came on,
they were in trouble. Shortly after, the captain announced that they were experiencing engine problems
and they were calling backup. Everyone was screaming and they thought they were on the verge of
death. Timothy was able to calm down quickly, he used the breathing techniques thought to him by his
therapist. He then helped Sam calm down and they tried figuring out what was causing the whale shark
to be so aggressive. Then when it charged at them for the fourth time she realized something. The whale
shark’s eyes were comparably smaller than those of the other whale sharks. This was a sign that the
whale shark was pregnant and was expecting to give birth soon. This is why it was being so aggressive
because it was being protective of its soon coming babies. Sam read about this in a book and
understood the creatures struggle, they seemed like a threat so it had to protect itself. Timothy also
made a discovery that could possibly be a factor why the whale shark was attacking. There was a
harpoon near its tail so it would’ve been in pain. Sam came to the conclusion that it was attacking
because it was in pain and the flash agitated it even more plus it was expecting babies.

Sam looked around the submarine and realized that everyone was scared and she didn’t know
how much more hits the sub could’ve taken. They came to the conclusion that the only way to help
everyone was to go out in the water and remove the harpoon to relieve some of the whale shark’s pain.
Sam went to the captain and explained the situation to him and asked for permission to go out in the
water. He was very skeptical at first but when she showed him her open water dive license he agreed.
He told her that he would send one of the crew members to assist her in the water. She suited up with
her wet suit and oxygen tank and she was ready to go in the water. She was about to risk her life for the
safety of others. Before going in the water Sam spoke to Timothy about what she was going and do. He
didn’t want her to go because he was scared she could get hurt, but he knew he couldn’t do anything to
stop her from going. All he could do is wish her the best and be hopeful. The captain placed Sam and the
other diver in the water well then released them into the water. Everyone watched them with anxious
eyes, hoping that they succeeded. When they arrived by the whale shark they moved very slowly so
they wouldn’t agitate it even more. Sam had the task of removing the harpoon and she set out to
complete her task. When she pulled the harpoon it moved slightly. The whale shark’s skin is about 4
inches thick and the harpoon was really in there so the harpoon would’ve taken some nudging to come
out. Unfortunately, the whale shark felt when she was pulling the harpoon and it started acting up. It
kept swinging its tail around which almost hit Sam on various occasions. However, when Sam made the
last pull on the harpoon to get it out, the whale shark’s tail hit her and caused her to slam against its
body. She went unconscious and started taking in a lot of water. The whale shark then swam away and
the harpoon fell out while it was swimming. Sam saved everyone but she was a bad condition. The next
diver swam to her and placed his secondary respirator in her mouth so she could get oxygen and started
swimming back to the sub. In the submarine she was unresponsive but thankfully the backup sub came
shortly after. When they resurfaced she was rushed to the hospital. She actually regained consciousness
but unfortunately she died three days after. The town oy Mayberry was in a state of moaning for their
unsound hero Samantha Lewis.

Michael and the kids were very sad about the passing of Sam but they were glad that she would be
remembered as a hero. Michael sued the guy who took the picture for 2 million dollars and won the
case. He knew no amount of money could replace his wife but at least he could use the money for the
kids to help them get through such a difficult situation. He brought then to Disney World and other
places just to distract them so they wouldn’t think much about their mothers passing. Although Michael
was trying to help the kids he was having a hard time coping with his wife’s death. He got a lot of
encouraging words from people so that helped him a bit. The kids realized that their dad was struggling
and explained to him that she isn’t really gone because she lives on in their hearts. Those words really
helped him to bounce back.

Samantha Lewis was recorded in the history books as a hero. She saved a submarine filled with
thirty –two passengers from being sunken by a whale shark and even helped the pregnant whale shark
during the process. Numerous books and movies were made about her with the most famous one being
‘The Heart of The Sea’. A statue was erected near the ocean in her honor. Timothy spoke to the head
master and got permission to start an oceanic club in honor of his favorite teacher Mrs. Lewis. The town
even paid for her funeral just to show how much they appreciated what she did. Michael and the kids
created a charity called ‘Ocean Love’ in honor of Sam. The charity was developed to help wounded sea
creatures get back in the water. Michael also gave two hundred and fifty thousand dollars towards
whale shark research, he knew Sam would’ve wanted that. Despite the fact that she died, Samantha
Lewis’ legacy would live on for a long time.
