The Science of Milk

Milk has long been seen as a healthy drink, because it contains valuable nutrients.
It is good for our bones and teeth because it offers a rich source of calcium. It’s a
source of energy in the form of saturated fat which can prevent muscle mass being
used for energy. And also, a rich source of choline, an important nutrient found to
support our sleep, muscle movement, learning and memory. Cow's milk is a source of
potassium, which can reduce blood pressure. It is designed to help baby cows grow
fast, so it makes sense that if we drink cow's milk, we can also grow up quickly.

Driven by growing populations and our needs as humans for a good source of
nutrients, the milk industry produces in excess of 840 million tons of products each
year as stated in the video. Milk is uniquely produced by mammals, such as goats,
sheep, buffalo and others, through a process known as lactation which means the
secretion of milk. Cow milk accounts for over 80% of global consumption and
utilization for production of other dairy products. Milk is a very versatile material,
and the process for handling and distributing it are highly developed and ever
expanding to meet global depends.

Some people argue that milk from animals is not good, that it is not ethical. But
for me, eating animal products is necessary for normal health and development. In
fact, thousands of babies rely on goats milk because their mothers cannot breastfeed
them. In my opinion, it is ethical to drink the milk of the animals as long as they are
not harmed, and they are not being kept in abusive conditions. But, I think we should
also find an alternative ways to make milk which still have health benefits and can
satisfy the needs of people, so that it is not just animals that we often used. Fortified
plant-derived milks, such as soy, rice, oat, and nut milks, can be a substitute to the
milk from animals. It provide calcium, vitamins, iron, zinc, and protein but do not
contain any cholesterol.
