the Total Physical Response.

D. Discussion

Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activity

Do you have any idea about Total Physical It is one of the approaches or method used in
Response? teaching a second language that use physical
activities teacher.

That is right!

TPR or Total Physical Response is an approach

used in teaching second language that is designed
to reinforce comprehension.

Please read what’s on the board. (Students read)

TPR or Total Physical Response is an approach

that follows the idea of “learning by doing”. Do In this approach, the students learn more when
you have any idea what does it mean? they do what they ought to learn.

Excellent answer.

The idea of “learning by doing” is applied in TPR

approach through physical activities.

In a more concrete example, when we teach the

learners about the words “slow” and “fast”, we
can use a physical movement such as running-in-
place whereas they can run-in-place in a “slow”
and “fast” manner.

The learners learn about the words by doing a

physical movement that best describes it.

Who can read the next sentence? (a student will volunteer)

Yes Sofia. (a student will read)

Thank you.

In TPR approach the beginners will learn English

through a series of repetitive actions.

For example, we can incorporate songs and let the

learners sing while acting-out the words in the
song.

In this situation, they will be able to learn

effectively as they know the names of the action
they are doing together with the song lyric.

Are we clear? Yes teacher.

Good.

Now, who can give me an example of a classroom We can use poems.

scenario using TPR approach?

Poems. In what way poems can be used in TPR? The learners can act-out the words in the poems
miss.

Very good. While reciting the poem, the learners

can act-out the words written in it.

Another example of a classroom interaction that

we can use in this approach is the game called
“Simon Says”, whereas the class will be grouped
and given a word or phrase. The group will form a
line and the leader will whisper “Simon says
(insert the given phrase or word) to the following
member, the member will whisper the phrase or
word to the following member and so on.

Do you understand? Yes teacher.

E. Analysis’

Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities

It seems that you understand the lesson very well.

We will now have a short activity.

Are you ready guys? Yes.

The activity will be a skit. The class will be

grouped into 2 groups and each group will make a
two-minute skit in which you show a certain
classroom scenario that used TPR approach in
learning English as a second language.

You can base your skit on the given examples we

had in our discussion which are songs, dances,
poems, or you can be creative as you want.

Do you understand? Yes teacher.

Very well.

After your presentation, choose a member that

will explain how you used the TPR approach in
the classroom interaction. The explanation will be
30 seconds to 1 minute only.

Make sure that every member will greatly

cooperate in this group activity.

F. Generalization

Teacher’s Activities Students’ activities

Very well class.

Let us always remember that there are different

approaches and methods that we can use in
teaching English as a second language. One of it
is the Total Physical Response or TPR approach.

It is the approach that used the idea of “learning

by doing” and used repetitive activities in order
for the learners to learn effectively.

TPR can be a fun approach or method in teaching

as the teacher can utilize fun and enjoyable
activities for the learners.

given a paper with a tongue twister written on it and he/she will past it to the next member and so on.
