As a social construct:

There are many strategies to change our appearance now more than ever, including
dozens of cosmetics choices and treatments for plastic surgery to achieve Instagram-worthy
aesthetics. There is indeed a presumption, however, that this fascination with beauty is rooted in
low self-esteem and, for women, the male gaze is considered attractive. Therefore, it appears like
she is lying to or deceiving men when a woman tries to tweak her appearance. The reality may
be, however, that the pursuit of beauty has less to do with romance and more with personal
achievement. Beautiful and attractive individuals are more likely than those on the lower rungs
of the beauty ladder to be employed and have a higher salary. In a culture powered by capitalism,
human beings are instinctively wired to be attracted towards attractiveness, which translates into
financial success. Nonetheless, when it comes to "fake" bodies and faces, the general public has
a love-hate relationship.
