B. MOTIVATION

1. GROUP ACTIVITY

The students will be divided in to four; each group will

sit around a table. They will be given a paper to
complete the table by filling in the missing degrees of
comparison.
They will come up the following table:

(Student’s will give their answer)

(Student will volunteer to read the definition of

comparative sentence: are used to compare one
noun to another noun. In these instances, only
two items are being compared.)

Yes, teacher!

(Student will volunteer to read the definition of

superlative adjective: are used to compare three
or more nouns. They’re also used to compare
one thing against the rest of a group.
Superlative adjectives demonstrate a higher
C. Presentation: level of comparison between entities.)
Very good! I am pleased that you are able to finish
your task on time. Can anybody tell me what you
notice in the following table?

D. Discussion:
Very good observation! Now, let me introduce to you Yes, teacher!
the Comparative and Superlative Adjective. Would
someone read this comparative adjective for me?

Thanks! Now, let’s take a look at the number 1 the

positive degree is big so the comparative adjective is
bigger notice that you add +er to the end and the
superlative adjective is biggest which you add +est to
the end. So, most one-syllable adjectives, you just
simply add er to make the comparative form and to
compare three or more things, you simply add +est to
make the superlative form. Understood?

So, let proceed now to the Superlative Adjective

would someone read the definition for me?
Yes, teacher!

Nice answers! so, let’s take a look at the number 2

and 3 notice that the words end in est, so to make it a Yes, teacher!
comparative form you simply remove the est and add
er to the end. So dark becomes darker and the
positive degree is dark, and brightest becomes
brighter and the positive degree is bright. Did you get
it?

So, lets go on with number 4, notice that the

comparative form is fatter so to make it superlative
form you remove er and add +est to the end and the
positive degree would be fat.

So, number 5 and 6 is same as with number 1 so just

add er to make it comparative form and est to make it
a superlative form.
(Students say no and some of them ask
questions)
The number 7 is same with number 4, to make it
superlative form you remove er and add +est to the
end and the positive degree would be great.
Understood?

For numbers 8 and 10 it is same with the numbers 2

and 3 to make it a comparative form you simply
remove est and add er to the end. So, the positive
degree would be short and thin. Get it?

So, let’s discuss the last number 9, it is also same

with number 7 and 4, to make it a superlative form
you remove er and add +est to the end and the
positive degree would be large.

Thank you! Oh! I could see that some of you got a

little confused with comparative and superlative but I
am glad that you were able to get its function. Nice
try for those who gave their answers!

Well done class! Do you have any question or

clarifications?
