Exercise

Direct Distance Entry and Polar Tracking

Figure 2: Drawing for Distance Entry and Polar Tracking

1. Open the drawing file named OBJECT.

2. Turn on POLAR Tracking function.

3. Start the LINE command. At the “Specify first point:” prompt, type 0,0 and press <enter>.
4. Move the cursor straight to the right from the start point. When you see the tracking line, type
30, and press <enter>.
5. Move the cursor straight up from the current point. When you see the tracking line, type in 20
and press <enter>.
6. Continue to draw the shape shown above by repeating step 5 and step 6.
7. For the last segment, type C<enter> (Close) to finish the LINE command.
8. Save the drawing by using the File, Save As… command on the File menu. Save it as OBJECT.

Drawing Rectangles

Figure 3: Rectangles drawing

1. Continue using the drawing OBJECT.

UEME1253: Engineering drawing and CAD- module 1 UNIVERSITI TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN

2. Start the RECTANGLE command. For the first corner, type the coordinates
2,2 and press <enter>.
3. Type D<enter> for the Dimensions option. Specify the Length of 6 and the Width of 11.
4. Pick a point for the other corner to place the rectangle as shown above.
5. Repeat step 2 to step 4 to place the other rectangle as shown above.
6. Save the drawing as OBJECT.

Drawing Circles

Figure 4: Circles Drawing

1. Continue using the drawing OBJECT.

2. Using the CIRCLE command with the Centre, radius option, and draw
the circle shown in the upper right corner of the object. For the centre point, type the absolute
coordinates 25,16 to place the circle exactly on the specified point. Enter 2 for radius.

3. Using the CIRCLE command with the 2 Points option, draw a circle inside the
rectangle on the right. Pick the points visually – the placement will be approximate anywhere
inside the rectangle.

4. Using the CIRCLE command with the Tan, Tan, Tan option, draw a
circle touching three sides of the left rectangle as shown in the figure above. In order to use the

Tan, Tan, Tan option you must select CIRCLE from the DRAW pull-
down menu at the top of the screen.
5. Save As… and close the drawing.

Drawing with GRID and SNAP

Figure 5: GRIP and SNAP drawing

1. Open the drawing SCHEMATIC.

2. Turn on GRID and SNAP (they are both set to 1.0).

3. Draw the objects shown above starting with the large circle in the middle (Radius=2)
somewhere near the center of the screen. The rectangles should all be 6 x 4. The exact distance
between objects can be at any range as long as they are aligning with each other.
4. Save As… SCHEMATIC and close the drawing.

Using Object Snap

Figure 1: FENCE-A Drawing

1. Open the drawing FENCE-A.

2. Right-click on OSNAP in the Status Bar and click setting from the menu.

UEME1253: Engineering drawing and CAD- module 1 UNIVERSITI TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN

3. Set the Object Snap modes to Endpoint, Midpoint, and

Center only. Turn the Object Snap on. (In this case we will need quadrant).
4. Start the LINE command and draw a “fence” from the corner of the house through each of the
“fence posts” to the other corner of the house as shown above.
5. Start LINE again and draw a line from the midpoint on the right side of the house to the
midpoint of the fence across from it. The line will be at an angle.
6. Save and close the drawing.

Using Snap Overrides

Figure 2: ARM Drawing

1. Open the drawing ARM.

2. Set the OSNAP settings to Center, Quadrant, Endpoint, and Midpoint.

3. Draw circles of radius 0.5 at the center (A) of the two existing circles.

4. Using the Snap to Tangent override each time you click, draw lines connecting
the large circles tangent (B) to each circle.
5. Draw a line from the 9 o’clock quadrant (C) of the lower circle to the upper left

Intersection (D) of the rectangle.

6. Draw a line from the 3 o’clock Quadrant (E) of the lower circle

Perpendicular (F) to the top of the rectangle.

7. Draw a line from the Midpoint (G) of the top line of the rectangle to the
Midpoint of the lower line of the rectangle.

Notes: For points that are not set as automatic OSNAPs, you must pick an Object Snap
override each time you pick a point.

Figure 3: ARM Drawing Continued

8. Draw a line that starts at the Center of the left circle, is Parallel to
one of the diagonal lines, and is 5 units long. (Hints: once you have placed the first point and
specified that the new line is parallel to an existing line, use direct distance entry to set the
distance of the new line.)

9. Draw lines from the Endpoint of the last Tangent to the small
circle on the right.

10. Draw another line along the Extension of the line that starts at the center of
the circle, 4 units from the upper end of that line and 4 units long.
11. Save and close the drawing.

Polar Tracking Setting

Figure 4 : BRACE Drawing

1. Open the drawing BRACE.

2. Right-click on POLAR in the Status Bar and click Settings from the menu to open the
Polar Tracking settings. Set the Increment angle to 45 degrees . Turn Polar
tracking on.

3. Switch to the Snap and Grid tab. Select Polar Snap as the snap type,
and set the Polar Distance to 1. Make sure Snap is on, and click OK to close the dialog.
4. Start the LINE command, and click a point in the lower left corner of the screen. Move the
pointer to the right until Polar:3.00<0˚ appears in the snap tip. Click a point.
5. Move the cursor up and to the right. When Polar: 4.00<45˚ appears, click a point.
6. Move the cursor to the right. When Polar: 6.00<0˚ appears, click a point.
7. Continue to work your way around the outline shown above.
8. Save and close the drawing.

rectangle.

a. Start the LINE command.

b. Move your cursor over the upper right corner of the rectangle.
c. Move your cursor to the right. A horizontal dotted line will appear even with the
corner. Type 2 <enter> to place a point two units to the right of the corner.
d. Move your cursor over the lower right corner of the rectangle.
e. Move your cursor to the right. A horizontal dotted line will appear even with the
corner. Type 2 <enter> to place a point two units to the right of the corner. Press
<enter> to end the command.

b. Move your cursor over the midpoint of the one of the horizontal lines on the rectangle.
c. Move your cursor over the midpoint of the one of the vertical lines on the rectangle.
d. Move your cursor to the center of the rectangle. Dotted lines will appear from the two
midpoints to the cursor. Click this point for the center of the circle.
e. Type 0.5<enter> for the radius.
5. Draw a rectangle that is lined up with the two existing rectangles, as shown. Use the
RECTANGLE command, and track from corners of the existing rectangles.
