ABSTRACT
The aim of this research is to synthesize AA8014 + SiC + fly ash reinforced composite by stir
casting method and investigate its machinability in the CNC green turning operation with
conventional uncoated and advanced coated tools to minimise the surface roughness and
maximize the material removal rate. Materials and methods: The Control Group is HSS tool
and Experimental Group is TiAlN coated WC tool and TiCN coated WC tools. Aluminium
alloy AA8014+ SiC+Fly ash is fabricated and machined using HSS tool and TiAlN coated
WC tool at CNC lab. This has 2 groups of samples with a sample size of 32(16 for each
group) with 95% as its pre-test power. It is then tested for surface roughness using a
profilometer. The values of surface roughness are tabulated and the graph of comparison
between the surface roughness values using both the tools is plotted using the SPSS tool.
Result: The samples machined with the experimental group (TiAlN coated WC tool and
TiCN coated WC tools) shows better surface finish than the samples machined with the
control group (HSS tool). It has its level of significance value p<0.05 with both the tools.
Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, we can conclude that in contrast with other
conventional groups like the HSS tool the surface finish of the aluminium alloy increases and
has better quality when machined with TiAlN coated WC tool and TiCN coated WC tools
