Groundwater Sampling Methodology Guide

1. Groundwater sampling is required during a site investigation at Sumatra Gold in Indonesia, but sampling will be tricky due to drilling fluid and water used during diamond drilling. 2. The suggested methodology is to flush the borehole after drilling to remove drilling fluid, lower the packer and overshot to purge 10 meters of water 3 times until the pH stabilizes at the groundwater level of around 5. 3. The required field gear includes a pH meter, water level dipper, sample bottles, syringe, filter, and driller's overshot.

GROUNDWATER SAMPLING PROCEDURE AT SUMATRA GOLD, INDONESIA

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Groundwater samples have to be collected during the site investigation at Sumatra Gold. Since we are
drilling using diamond rigs, and we are using drilling fluid and water during the drilling, groundwater sampling
will be slightly tricky.

You will find below a suggested methodology for groundwater sampling.

2.0 SUGGESTED METHODOLOGY

The important thing is to sample groundwater and not flushing water or drilling fluid. Following the drilling
and prior to the packer testing, the borehole will be flush of drilling fluid. Following the flushing, the rods will
be lowered as low as possible, in an area where the packer can be inflated with no risk of blow up.

Once the packer is lowered and inflated, the driller overshot is lowered in the drill rod to a depth
approximately 10 m below the water level and lifted quickly. This will purge the borehole of 10 m of water.
Repeat the operation several time until you have removed approximately 3 times the volume of water in the
rods and until the pH is stable. The local groundwater has a pH of about 5, whilst the water used for flushing
may have a higher pH. You can measure the pH of the flushing water prior to confirm this hypothesis.

When the water is representative of the groundwater in the formation, samples can be collected.

3.0 REQUIRED FIELD GEAR

The following will be required:
 pH meter

 water level dipper

 sample bottles

 syringe and filter

 driller’s overshot
