1. What does the Central Limit Theorem tell us about the sampling distribution of the sample
mean?
The central boundary theorem indicates that even for non-normal population, the distribution
of the sample mean X will approximately follow a normal distribution with mean and standard
Deviation if the sample size n is large, and the samples are random.

2. The weights of Granny Smith apples from a large orchard are Normally distributed with a mean
of 380 gm and a standard deviation of 28 gm.
(a) A single apple is selected at random from this orchard. What is the probability that it
weighs more 400 gm?

P ( x> 400 )=0.5+0.2611
¿ 0.7611
The Probability that is weighs move 400 gm is 0.7611 or 76.11%

(b) Three apples are selected at random from this orchard. What is the probability that
their mean weight is greater than 400 gm.?

The Probability that is weighs move 400 gm is 0.8925 or 89.25%

(c) Explain why the probabilities in (a) and (b) are not equal.
Their probabilities are not equal because in letter (a) they only select a single apple while in letter (b)
they select three apples.

3. The scores of students on the ACT college entrance examination in a recent year had a Normal
distribution. with mean µ = 18.6 and a standard deviation of σ = 5.9.
(a) What is the probability that a single student randomly chosen from all those taking
the test scores 21 or higher?
(b) Now take a simple random sample of 50 students who took the test. What are the
mean and standard deviation of the sample mean score ¯x of these 50 students?
(c) What is the probability that the mean score of these students is 21 or higher?

Note: Show your complete solution.

C. Their probabilities are not equal because in letter (a) they only select a single apple
while in letter (b) they select three apples.

3.)
a. M = 18.6
σ = 5.9
x̄ = 21 P ( x̄ > 21 )
n=1
z = x̄ - μ
σ
√n
= 21 - 18.6

√1
= 2.4
5.9
z = 0.41

(using standard normal distribution table when 2 = 0.41, the area is 0.1591)
P ( x̄ > 21 ) = 0.5 + 0.1591
= 0.6591
The probability that a single student randomly chosen from all those taking the test
scores 21 or higher is 0.6591 or 65.91%.

b. M ( x̄ ) = M = 18.6
SD ( x̄ ) = σ = 5.9
√n √50
= 0.8344

c. x̄ = 21
Mx̄ = 18.6
σx̄ = 0.83
= x̄ - Mx̄
σx̄
= 21 - 18.6
0.83
= 2.87
P ( x̄ > 21 ) = 0.0021
The probability that the mean score of these students is 21 or higher is 0.0021 or 0.21%.
